Wayne, I believe Marcel Massini maintains a 288 GTO register. Jack |

Steve, congratulations and welcome to the forum! Does anybody have the s/n of the mentioned lost GTO from Canada? Or is there even a GTO registry showing how many are still 'alive'? |

I am fortunate enough to own one of these cars and love it to death, I bought mine for a substantial amount but since then, (almost 3 years) my 328 has cost me alot more in repair and maintenance bills. I would have no problem recommending these cars to anyone who can afford the initial outlay ? Regards, Steve |

I was the one who posted about the GTO motor for 150,000 U.S. dollars but that was a complete motor with trany, and about 10 years ago. |

Ferrari of Ontario had one go up in flames a few years back. Made the news papers and the nightly news broadcast on T.V. |

If you can afford the high price of a 288 GTO, you can afford the maintenance, whatever the cost is. |

I read somewhere of the 272 (273?) GTO build, already some 70 are destructed from engine fire, oil leaking from the hot turbos on the manifold. Is this true? When German Auto Motor und Sport tested the car in 1985 they had constant problems with turbo hoses coming loose and had to wash the car with plastic over the engine, otherwise it wouldn't run properly after. The F40 has 478 HP from basically the same engine, the GTO evolutione even much more. I think the F40 is kind of reliable? |

Exactly how different is a 288GTO engine from a 308 engine.($150,000.00 cost-?) From what I understand, there turbo's involved, but I am sure it's alot deeper than that.(balanced and bluprinted and such)Injected? What type? And,that the engine is mounted longitudally in the 288,as opposed to horizontally like in the 308. Whats the difference in the drivetrain/transaxle? Thanks! |

I have heard that when properly maintained the 288GTO is nearly indestructable. It was designed to be a rally car so it had to be tough & reliable |

Seeing as though it's a tiny V8 puting out over 400 HP, you could assume that a good amount of driving will require hellacious repairs and maintenance. I heard (on ths site) that someone found a 288 motor for some ungodly figure like $150,000. I don't think the time it was built has anything to do with it's reliability. The fact that was the closest thing on the market to a full-out race car has a lot to do with it's maintenance issues. But, I've never owned or driven or spoken to anyone who has owned or driven one, so this is pure speculation.

In terms of aesthetics it's certainly my favorite car (!), but considering it was built in the mid-eighties when Ferrari was infamous for reliability, I'm not sure I want to keep it on my wish list for life. Dunno. |
