Eric, Mike: I have the same issues. Thanks for bringing it up.

Thanks Dave, Darth, Doody, Eric. Interesting - I will keep an eye on this and see how it goes. I was about to raise a stink with the previous owner - claiming that they swapped out the tank with a smaller one. :-)

P.S. I was in LA - but still was 6.5 gallons short.

3 points:

1) the gas gague on 550's sucks

2) the fuel tank ALWAYS traps bubbles, esp. on hot days, that keeps you from filling it all the way

3) in cities with EPA-mandated fume recovery on gas pumps (like Dallas, Houston, LA, etc), you CAN fill it all the way (29 gallons). I have...

just seems odd that we have 30 gallon tanks and cant put more than 20 in? Although DL put 25 in. Maybe the other 550 guys can check in here with their record fill. If we knew we really had 30 gallons we could save every third trip to the gas station. e.g always filling up with 1/3 full still.

On my other cars I was always exceeding the max - e.g. 15 gallon tank - 15.2, etc.

I will check the S/N and post it tomorrow.

Hmm...myself, maybe 17 gall, so nothing that would lead to any conclusions. My dad might have put more on a different occasion.

Maybe we'll have to test it a bit and see what we can figure out.

p.s. ours is a 2000 as well. What s/n are you, perhaps our cars hung out once in Maranello. We're 121367.

Thanks for your post Eric. Curious - what is the most gallons you have put in the tank in one fill?

P.S. your needle experience is like mine.

FYI, after a complete fill up (even tried a "top off" for a second click), the gauge didn't show a completely full tank, but slightly less, maybe halfway between 3/4 and full. Haven't let it go low enough yet to do the math for a significant refill, but signs so far show that it might be a bit off. It bothers me a bit, but we just deal with it for now.

DL - "never put in more than 24" - chicken you have 6 gallons left! :-) (kidding obviously)

That makes sense - I was on "E" and book says 5 reserve. Put in about 18.5. The car is so new to me that I am over thinking everything. Gonna drive it to SF and back in two weeks!

FYI - I drove my Porsche down to LA from SF today and tested out the Valentine One that arrived yesterday (for the 550) and it paid for itself about 2 hours. Was playing cat and mouse with a BMW at about 110 mph and got the bleep - bleep, slowed right down and about 30 seconds later the BMW got zapped.

Thanks DL - I will keep and eye on it. I guess I really must have 10 - 12 gallons left when the needle is on E and the light is on. Just don't want to find out the hard way that I really only have a 23 gallon tank (due to swap out before my purchase.)

MIke,
They do have gas gauge problems. FWIW both my friends with 360s had problems as well. One of mine had a problem.

Isn't it interesting though, how you can actually watch the needle come down?

Doody - thanks. So it could be misreporting empty early. When you fill up on E do you definitely put in about 25 gallons?

I will calculate MPG. If I am getting over 10 then I will be suspicious of the gauge.

Love it - "it passes everything except gas stations"

maybe your gas gauge is misreading.

i don't recall any such behavior, though i don't do the math at every fill-up.

"it passes everything on the highway except the gas stations."

doody.

I filled up my car (2000 550) for the first time today. The fuel indicator light came on. Gas gauge was on E (not below).

I filled it until it stopped and an extra squeeze (stopped again). I put in 18.5 gallons. The needle was a tiny bit below full after the ostensible fill-up.

Per my owners book it seems like the 550 has a 30 gallon tank - with 5 reserve. My take on the reserve is that you have 5 gallons left once the fuel light goes on.

So where are the extra 6.5 gallons?

By the way - loving the the car. I am going to put about 1,000 miles on it in the next two weeks and am curious about the tank capacity. Perhaps the car has a problem.
