Neal, The term "Cup Car" is somewhat generic. Technically the cup cars are the GT3's that are run in various one make Porsche GT3 series (Porsche Super Cup Series, UK Super Cup Series,...). Some of these cars end up in Grand Am Cup or PCA here in the states. Those are all GT3 Cup Cars with about 360-380 hp. The car your friend is looking at is a GT3R or GT3RS which is an upgraded version of a standard cup car with more power and more upgrades. These cars run in ALMS, FIA, Grand Am and PCA. If the car is only being used for track duty I would consider the GT3R's over a 360 Challenge. Many more parts available, cheaper to run and faster. Don't get me wrong the 360 C is a good car but its too expensive and they are hard to work on if you aren't a dealer with the correct diagnositc tools. Parts are harder to come by (FNA only). I have also seen many people hjave tons of problems with the electricals on the 360 C's. Just an example but if you blow up a 360 C motor it's 40K and a three month wait from the factory. Do so in a GT3 and you can have one in 2 days from the west coast for half the cost. Laslty the GT3R and GT3RS are better built, better balanced and just plain faster. At the Glen a 360 C does 2:00 flat while a GT3 is 3-4 seconds quicker. A good GT3 Cup car is about 70-90K while the GT3R's and RS's run anywhere from 80K - 150K depending on how bad it's been beaten up, number of spares, version R, RS, RS w/ 02 updates, or RS w/ 03 updates. I don't own either car (GT3 or 360 C) but run with a bunch of people who own both and it's just my impression that the GT3 is a better car. Regards, Jon P. Kofod 1995 F355 Challenge #23 |
