"an excellent example of survival of the insensitive"

Your welcome. Intelligence and/or wisdom can sometimes overcome experience.

What if it was your son or daughter and I took them for a spin in my brand new 360, pushed it and wrecked, by being either stupid or inexperienced. How would you feel?

Not only did the driver have trouble on this road once, but obviously that wasn't enough of an experience to learn from. This is what we call learning the hard way. I feel very sorry for both, Heatley's life will never be the same after this.

There is a great cliche called time and place. Sorry to pollute the thread, next time, condemn me in private.

I spoke to a lawyer in Atlanta (where I got my TR) He said that the ALUMINUM TUBE FRAME was what caused the car to break in half. I was not aware of ALUMINUM as a space frame on a road car. If so that may, I said may, explain the breakup. I flipped a sprint car in 1970's with chrome moly as the frame but never saw aluminum used in that venue.
Being New to Ferrari where many frames ALUMINUM? If so I assume it was aircraft grade

Tks. Dave.

Whats amazing to me is how many guys (who are marginal drivers at best) get behind the wheel of a high performance vehicle and act as if they had some epiphany about being able to drive a racecar!

Didn't some one say they had long skid marks on the street? I would guess they meant that impact was at 80mph.

Total speed could have been 120 and skid down to 80 before impact?

True, but if you think about it, how can you loose control of a ferrari at 80mph, and tear it in half. The first report last week, was somone saying they were doing well over 100. I don't know, but 80mph definately doesn't sound fast enough to do that damage.

Catch fire and disintegrate? Go with a tube frame car man! Mine has been smacked around and it didn't even break the window glass. Admittedly,
other vehicles were moving as well so I don't think the Gs were up there with stationary obstacle impacts.

Nothing holds up to a telephone pole or a brick wall.

I've taken many courses which stress looking far ahead of the vehicle and picking out "escape" trajectories. Maybe this guy can get one of the "court mandated" classes I've had!

Well, newspapers certainly don't have any way I suppose to verify whether it was 80 mph (like they reported) or 180 mph, but 180 mph seems far fetched for a two lane road. Were there witnesses and what did they say?

80 mph? Try 180 mph.

Jim

I was wondering that too. I know 80 mph is a lot of speed to hit anything head on, but the passenger compartment is completely destroyed. I wonder what a Mercedes SL would look like after a similar crash. Somehow I think the passenger compartment would be largely intact.

Too many young guys (not all,but some) think like this..."I am STRONG,(strong) I am INVINCIBLE(invincible) I'm a MAN,man" And don't have enough life experience to know; When to slow down. When to not drink and drive. When to use a seatbelt. When you DON'T need to try to impress everyone else all the time. No. Older does not always = wiser, but, generally speaking,it does. And,no one is invincible. (except superman and AHHHnold)

to clarify - my comment concerned Mr. Garofalo's statement, not the car's occupants.

It's official - Heatley has been charged with first degree vehicular homicide. He is free on $50k bond. Prosecutor wants to raise bond to $75k. Court date set for Friday. Defense attorney wants to delay the date. Heatley's attorney is the same one who defended footballer Ray Lewis' murder charge.

Is it me or does it seem that when a ferrari is crashed it just disintegrates? maybe the speed involved is part of it, but they all seem to catch fire and rip in half.

It is my understanding that the seatbelts were worn by both occupants. The section of the car with the seats separated from the area where the belt anchors were located.

We'll never know, but there is a chance Dan Snyder was egging Heatley on with comments like "what'll she do? How fast will it accelerate before that sign down there...". What I'm saying is Snyder MAY NOT be as innocent as we would like to believe. No matter what, Heatley was a complete idiot for doing what he did and now has to live with his conscience, if he has one.

Atlanta news reports say he may be given the option to plead guilty to a second degree vehicular homicide which means no jail time. If he doesn't accept, they will charge him with first degree which carries a possible sentence of 3-15 years. I doubt Snyder's family feels that's enough. JMHO

Those two had it all-fame, bright futures, health, wealth, early 20s and driving around in a Ferrari. How suddenly it can all change.

Tragic. :-(

I agree with the seatbelts statement in general, but doubt it would have made a difference in this case. I mean the car was split in half. Literally. I'm amazed the driver survived, that's a miracle by itself.

Its the other way around. Dan was the passenger. The 22-year old driver will face some serious charges, and barring those, may not play hockey this season with knee injuries. He should have been the one removed from the gene pool instead.

Just heard on the news that the hockey player who crashed the 360 Spider just passed away.
