Here is one more option. I take my cars to a test only station, actually the one by the Hillcrest DMV. They are very carefull, like cars and I have seen no examples of carelessness. They did not put chains on my 456mGT |

I talked to DMV and they said I could do this, but I have gotten several different stories from them in the past however, anyway I am going to go for it. AAA said the same thing so hopefully it will work. The mentioned that the registrationdate will be the same but last year had a few simillar situations and waived the smog test. :-) I will do my bumper adjustment & winter fluid changes. Of course if arnold get elected I will have to convert it to a hydrogen fuel cell. |

Robert, I also have a 75 GT4, live in San Diego and have to deal with the People's Republic of California smog laws. Hasn't been legally registered since 96 and have been driving it carefully ever since via Non-op status. I refuse to let those idiots touch my car. I am bypassing that whole mess completely by registering it in a county that grandfathers in any car over the age of 25 years, not the current 30 year BS crap that CA keeps upping everytime they feel like it. |

Good question ... what you need to find out, is what date they will use when you "re-classify" your car. It's possible that they'll use the prior date of registration, which means you are still in the same boat. Non-operational, does not mean that the car is "un-registered". Just a thought ... call the DMV. You don't have to tell them who you are...just pose the question. OR better ... call AAA. I always use them for registration, anyway. |

I have a 75 gt4. January 1, 2004 it will be exempt from smog. I have to smog it on December 20, 2003. Instead I was going to non op it, work on it for about 15 days then re-register it trying to avoid the smog inspection. Has anyone done this, and will it work? My car has consistantly passed the smog test but last time the smog tech ground the gears (twice)then wrapped cahins around the rear suspension. I felt like I had been raped. I have since rebuilt the rear suspension and it is nicely painted. I feel guilty I have never let anyone, not even my wife drive the car and yet every two years I have let some pretty sad dudes smog it. Thanks for any input. |
