... London has more Michelin starred restaurants than Paris ...

Contempory british food in England is actually rather good (Conran, the Ivy, Oxo etc), but it isn't really exported. All you'll find in the US is steak and kidney pie, fish and chips and bangers and mash. Mind you, all of those are great meals IMHO esp with HP Sauce and beer...

Dave, LOL. Don't really have my own biz anymore to write them off. Oh well.

Thanks all for having played and enjoyed this. To paraphrase Kalifoniaz' new Gaverna "I'll be back!". Next year with new food pics. Will be difficult for some countries like England though. What else but Fish and Chips do they eat? Porridge, hmmm. Delicious...

Mike, I'll stick with the steak house. Not a Japanese food fan. Once a year is plenty for me. Was Chicken Teriyaki btw. At least not raw.

:-) Picky Picky I know, but then again I can be a bit anal about beer. I always read the label to make sure I'm not drinking "locally" brewed equivalents.

For example, its common for Asahi, Kirin etc to not be the imported bottle from Japan, but to be locally brewed. Since the purity laws vary very widely I always prefer the "original". This is esp. important with Japanese/German/Czech brews where the water laws are quite arcane. Whereas in the UK you can put pretty much whatever preservative you like in branded beers (Fosters etc is all pretty chemical and gives you a bad head).

BTW Many thanks Andreas - I enjoyed this thread a lot!

Jerry, I wish. No actually I shot all of them (except Indy of course) in restaurants around Chicago. We're blessed with a very multicultural cuisine around here.

The fun/though part is taking the shots and making sure the light is right and you get on the picture what you want etc. Luckily with the instant feedback for a digital camera not so hard anymore. But more often than not I ended up with somewhat cold food by the time I got to finally eat it...

Of course people/waiters start to look funny at you, when you climb your chair to get that vertical shot or when you flash your food five times in a row...

As far as GPs go, this year was actually slightly different: Went to two GPs (Imola and Indy). Lucky me.

Anyway, the fact, that these menus are ultimately made in the US is the reason why some stuff is not totally authentic (like the missing herbe sauce on the French steak or the wrong British beer).

Dan, got the point about the beer. You're right of course. Will do better next time. Sigh. Don't tell the Irish, please...

Frank, thanks. Yes a lot of effort went into eating all this. Life is though, but somebody has to do the dirty work.

Can I point out that Guiness is IRISH - which is VERY clearly not British.

FYI the country is called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Great Britain = England, Scotland, Wales.

Guiness is from the Repulic of Eire - "Southern Ireland".

A pint of Bass or some similar warm british beer would have been more appropriate. Or perhaps a drink with an umbrella given the propensity for rain in England :-)

Since (almost) all you guys liked this, I have another excuse to disturb the patrons of restaurants next year, when I climb onto my chair to get that vertical shot down of my plate.
:-)

To be repeated in a year's time.

PS: Already have another idea for a different contest. But not for a while, we don't want to waste too much precious bandwidth, won't we?

Well,tater-tot. The thread is called,"F-1 dinners" F-1 stands for Formula One. As in auto racing,as in Ferrari's racing, like, for over 50 years. And that Ferrari has been World champ for the last few of them, and many in between. Thats all.

Big Ones, welcome to the board.

F1 = Ferrari

No Ferrari, no F1. Ferrari is the only team, that participated in every World Championship year ever since the inception of Formula One.

The countries and menus represented here are all from the F1 calendar.

Or to put it differently: Ferrari represents to me the finer things in life. And good cuisine is part of that. Sorry it wasted your bandwidth.

Big Ones: quite simply it has to do with foods that are indigenous to F1 locales. F1 is very much a part of Ferrari, and if you travel to the races, these are the foods you wld experience.

This is culture - try it on for size!

Ok, here the clues to the menus:

A) Sangria as the drink, tapas as the menu and ceramics in the back ground

B) German brat with Sauerkraut and Weissbier (note 'Koelsch'). The 'Taste of Europe' points toward the Nuerburgring GP.

C) Romania, Bucharest and Murfatlar. Ok, not Hungary, but it points you in the vicinity. The menu is Hungarian Gulash.

D) British 'Fish and Chips'. Hard to tell that it is a fish (it is!), but the Guinness gives it away. Don't get fooled by the Fosters name, it sponsors every GP.

E) Brazilian Churasseria (sp?). They grill these huge parts of the cows on an open grill. Same would be true for Argentina, but no Argetinian GP this year.

F) Ah, San Marino. Well it is pasta. So is the Lasagne from Italy. 50/50 call. Sorry. One thing though: Bologna is known for these filled pastas (like on the lower plate) and Bologna is closer to San Marino than Monza is. Why did I like this the best? Because I actually ate it THERE! For the San Marino GP and it was out of this world finger licking good.

G) Australian steakhouse and Black Opal for wine. Should say it all.

H) What is the US known for? Fast food. Another hint: The background is the grand stand at Indianapolis speedway.

I) Molson beer is from Canada. The dish was actually some game (mousse I believe). Massive. Needed a Jaegermeister afterwards...

J) Lasagne. Monza. Basta!

K) Chinese beer and sticks to represent 'Asia' or Malaysia. The menu is original Malaysian cuisine btw. VERY hot.

L) Wiener Schnitzel. Yes, that cucumber looks odd.

M) Schpaetzle and Braten, drowned in some heavy brown sauce along with a Weissbier, it doesn't get more German than this. Note the blue/white papers representing Bavaria (as in Beemer). Along with REAL bread and Kraut again. As Indiana Jones said "I hate those Krauts!".
:-)

N) Strong geometry of a rectangular plate, rice, Sapporo beer, of course, Japan!

O) and P) Though ones: Both have French Red wines, both look like French cuisine. As I said, it is hard to distinguish French and Monaco cuisine, but here is the trick:

O) Steak and Frites, aka 'Cafe de Paris'. Granted the green 'sauce' is missing, but that's how they serve it here.

P) Kinda hard to tell from the picture, but it is a fish (the vegetables hint in that direction). So French cuisine with a fish? Indicating the ocean front, hence Monaco.

Today at 2pm ET I will post 16 fotos of meals from the 16 countries Formula One has been racing in this year:

1) Australia
2) Malaysia
3) Brazil
4) San Marino
5) Spain
6) Austria
7) Monte Carlo
8) Canada
9) Europe
10) France
11) Britain
12) Germany
13) Hungary
14) Italy
15) USA
16) Japan

You will have to identify the country the foto/food belongs to. The first to do so will win a Ferrari T-Shirt (see previous thread).

EACH PICTURE HAS A LETTER (LIKE A, B, C ETC) IN THE UPPER RIGHT OR LEFT CORNER. MATCH THAT LETTER WITH THE NUMBER OF THE GP COUNTRY AS YOUR ANSWER.

Everybody can try their luck multiple times, but I will only use your final answer until somebody else posts. The first one with the right answer, will get the T-Shirt.
