JT, that is pretty cool but I'd rather do it in my own 512TR & if you could combine that with a http://www.Carguytour.com it would be awesome :-)

Andrew,

It's interesting that you posted that picture of the Monaco Tunnel. The day I bought and drove my GTB home I had to negotiate the Cross Bronx Expressway. The tunnel under the Grand Concourse turned into that tunnel in Monaco for me.

A Ferrari will do that to ya, I reckon.

Holy crap. DES, for about as long as it took to read your snippet, I was the guy picking up the car! totally got sucked in to your writing.

I absolutely can identify with your passion. you captured the very essence of everything Ferrari.

If you could write for any ferrari mag and capture your honest impressions on paper creatively, It would be a big hit. Just dont get too jaded.

I purchased my TR from a great guy in Menomene, MI....and drove cross country to Tempe, AZ. A great car...and a great country. I stayed on the back roads and saw all the little towns (except for the freeway in S Dakota where I saw 178 on the speedo)...The Ferrari made more friends and started more conversations everywhere I went....definitely a ride I will never forget. The complete story is in Prancing Horse #112

WM, looks like you've had more stories than most - good show - I want to be you when I grow up.

Gregory, looks like you had a wonderful time - being in the right place at the right time is everything.

Andrew, I'm glad to hear you had the chance to do the trip - I did the Italian part many times, and its one of the best to ever do in a car!

I guess the true stories are better than the imaginary ones, although DES, your story was pretty cool.

LOL, Dan, that's so tyical, that would definitely happen to me... Thanks for the compliments, everyone, i really appreciate it... i'd love to write for a magazine, especially Forza or some other Ferrari-related publication - and yes, i'm serious about that... Very serious.

Byron & Brian, i guess you guys are right about excluding all of mankind - i just needed an ending and was in a hurry... i could never drive around in a Ferrari without The Bird... i would drive all over the country, though; i'd have to go show my friends my new car, let them take it for riDES, the whole nine... Along the way, i'd stop to meet all the chatters i've not yet met before... i'd even kidnap Jordan, too... :-)

Dan, I do not want to hijack this thread but didn't I see you mention somewhere that you had to replace the parking brake in your most recent service?

Anyways, for the sake of this thread I did drive from The French Alps into southern France then east onto Cannes, Nice and did part of the famous Formula 1 course in Monaco. Then I took off in direction of Italy all the way up to Torino and then in the Aosta Valley, under the Mont-Blanc and finally back into Chamonix! The only bad part about it is that I was driving a rental Renault Clio!

I can only imagine what it would be like in a 550 Maranello...black or red preferably!

I've had few. And hope to have more.
For example,
i had just finished working a weeklong stint in LA for a client based there, and returned to my hotel to be greeted by a call that my 550 had just arrived at FoBH, having been shipped a week earlier from NY.
I got a little help from the concierge to make last minute reserves at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, and spent the next four days, with an old buddy, romping up and down the PCH, off-season with nary a car or motorhome in sight. (There was one stoner in an old microbus who refused to pull to the layby, but other than that, it was clear sailing, along one of the most beautiful roads in the world, day after day).
The Post Ranch is an extraordinary getaway for those of you unfamiliar with it, with first class "shacks" of glass and steel propped up along the edge of the cliffs facing the ocean, a brilliant restaurant and wine cellar, an enforced no children policy, and every amenity.Off season, it was even better, as were the roads, just before the rainy season set in.

I also have fond memories of hopping off a plane at Kennedy airport after a few weeks business overseas, running home to shower and change, then hopping into a limo to be driven down to Phila. to pick up my then brand new 355 GTS paddle car. The drive home to NY was sublime, i was a little spaced-out from the travel, and the adrenline just wouldn't stop surging.
Then there was the time i raced a Daytona in my 512 BBi, and pulled past him at 140mph, the exhaust note changing to a full throated shriek...
Or the time i waited for delivery of the black barchetta to my house and watched the open truck turn the corner with that gleaming beast. Watching it offload, and then pull into my driveway stoked me for a drive i couldn't wait to begin. I signed a few papers, watched the truck pull away, and Liz and i hopped into the car for an afternoon drive in the country.

Or the time the Road & Track guys showed up at my house for 3 days of testing and photography in sublime autumn weather...

Back in 97-98, Oh I don't remember the year exactly, I went to Italy for 9 days. No wife, no kids. Just me and a friend who is also A Ferrari nut. Spent some time in Milan. Next stop? Modena of course. Toured the factory and met a friendly American who worked for Ferrari. He was great. Brought out for us all kinds of cool items. Keychains, etc. After the tour was over I said to him we would have to came back the next day. He asked why. I said the museum across the street was closed today and I really wanted to see it. NO PROBLEM!!! A quick phone call and he said go across the street they will open it for you. This was getting better all the time I had the whole place to myself. Just me and an unbelievable collection of Ferraris. While I was touring the factory I was walking from one building to another in a small street between two buildings and all of a sudden a 550 comes ripping around the corner. I was so surprised I didn't know if I should step forward or backwards. Not wanting to do what I call the squirrel and get wacked by a 550 I just froze in my tracks and the 550 went right around me within inches, like a cone set up at an autcross. The hair stood up on the back of my neck!! One last thing, I was walking down the street in front of the factory and a car with all kinds of wires hanging out of the wheelwells and strange body panels onit appeared. I got some great pictures. Turned out to be the 360 when it was being developed. Great close ups. It had already been in the magazines but far off shots on the test track. Not close ups like I got. Great time. want to do it again. My second trip was almost as good. I was touring Ducati and out of the blue some English guys invited me to tour Lamborghini. Stepped in it again. Funny my luck usually isnt that good.

"Whispered shuffles lightly rippled a crepuscular quietude. The air was cool but dry. i dragged deeply from my cigarette then French inhaled the thick, menthol smoke, awakening my nose. There i stood, in the vast parking lot of Wide World Of Cars, patiently enjoying time's relativity. The night was dark but darker still was the bowels of the garage. i futilely gazed into the unlit abyss. All was quiet. Until it came alive...

A growl rumbled to life, scything through the night, penetrating my chest with anticipation so pure, it was almost like fear. It was Sal. He dipped the throttle, this time the engine snarled louder, more ferociously. Out of the blackness of the garage, the sound resonated through the air. It suddenly, slowly began moving closer. A black nose emerged. It got wider until it was the front of the car. In another moment, the whole car was out of the garage, sitting in the lot; an idling arpeggio whose notes danced wildly throughout my soul.

My black Ferrari Enzo had finally arrived. Sal went to great lengths to ensure my privacy and picking it up late at night was perfect. i was very appreciative. i think it helped that we were introduced by James Glickenhaus, too.:-)

We exchanged pleasantries and he bid me good luck and happy times in my new Ferrari. i flicked my cigarette and slowly eased myself into the driver's seat. The black, carbon fiber interior was such a contrastingly calm DESign, complimenting such an intense car. i reached for the door handle and pulled it down, sealing myself inside my dream. It was finally a reality.

i sat motionless for a moment, my hands hesitating to touch the steering wheel. My leather Ferrari driving gloves ached to wrap around the wheel, to connect, to initiate, to go! i smiled and held back tears as my eyes began to water. i took a deep breath. In... out. i was as ready as i could ever be. i dipped the throttle, letting the engine bite into the night, warning all of existence that i was coming. My right-hand fingers, taut in leather, pulled on the right lever behind the wheel. As i slowly rolled away, i beeped the horn and waved to Sal. He was the last person who ever saw me.

Jay, your trip sounds awesome, so we better see some pictures after already mentioning them.

Andrew, I share your dream trip. I actually did this trip, and hit every interesting place between Amalfi and St. Tropez on the coast. Unfortunately, I didn't have a Ferrari then, so now I have to do it again in my 355!

For anyone who wants to know, Andrew's trip is the best trip anyone can do in any car, Ferrari or not, but I imagine best of all in a Ferrari spider. And for the record, you need a girl along for the ride, because showing up in Positano, Portofino, Monaco or St. Tropez alone is not near as much fun.

Wow no one mentioned a ride with a girl yet !

What about going from Paris to the south of Italy stopping in Le Mans (Visit of the Museum), Mas Du Clos (Visit of Bardinon's Collection), Marseille (Visit of the old town), Cassis (Gorgeous pictures by the bay), St Tropez (Drive by on the hardbor), Nice (Drive on the Promenades des Anglais), Monaco (Just to open the throttle on that tunnel) then off to Italy stopping in Torino ( Visit of the town), Venezia (although cars arent allowed), Modena, Maranello (Factory Tour), Bologna, Firenze (Visito f the town) then off to the Amalfi coast and to Napoli and maybe take the car to Capri...

About the car ? It would have to be a V12.Either a 250 SWB California or a 550 Barchetta with Tubis.

IMHO the greatest Ferrari drive of all time remains Mr. Chinetti's first win at LeMans for Ferrari. He drove 23.5 of the 24 hours stopping only to shave so he would look presentable as he took the checker.
The one I personally remember was Boston to NY in 2 hours in a 275GTB. It was the day they lowered the national speed limit to 55. I kind of looked at it as a protest against tyrannie.

In actuality, I had originally scheduled to spend the time in the 360 Coupe. But when I took delivery of the car, the third gear syncro was just about out, so they upgraded me FREE to the 360 Spider. At first I wasn't too happy about this, because I like the lightness of the Coupe and feared there would be some cowl shake in the Spider. But after spending a few days in the Spider, I really fell in love with it. Especially when the sun was warm and I was able to do some top-down driving in the mountains. I now have a whole new appreciation for Spiders!

I think I just had mine...

Rented a 575M F1 from European Ferrari Rental for 3 days and hit 300 km/hour for the first time in my life on the German Autobahn.

Then got a ride in their new Enzo on the Autobahn and hit 275 km/hour and enjoyed every second of it.

Then rented their 360 Spider 6 speed and spent a week driving through the Swiss, Bavarian, and Austrian Alps.

Then drove down to Maranello and saw the 460GT test mule, and watched a new 360 Stradale run laps along with an Enzo at Fiorano. Also saw a 250 California Spider running laps concurrently with the Enzo.

I just took my FIFTEEN roles of film in for developing and can't wait to see them tomorrow!

Good start, Vince, but he said 'ultimate'...

After a Tuesday Factory Tour where I see my Challenge Stradale finish up, I meet Barrichello Wednesday morning for my first day of instruction at Fiorano. We take turns driving/riding in their Stradale's (no need to put extra miles on mine yet). Last session of the day in mine... Barrichello signs the dash. Thursday is a repeat of Wednesday but Schumacher is teaching/riding/driving/signing. Friday is a near repeat of Thursday, but this time with one of their F1 cars. Complete with learning launch control and one real-speed pit stop.

Of course, the evenings on each of those days are spent dining at great Italian restaurants with my wife, my instructor for that day, his guest, and on different days Jean Todt, Luca di Montezemolo, and hmmmm... lots of good options for that third night. Of course then I cruise around Italy until the next week where we end up at the next F1 race where I have a full pit pass. The trip ends with a 1-2 Ferrari win and I catch one of the champagne bottles that they toss down... during that week my CS was headed back to my house where it is waiting for me when I arrive back home.

Yep, that sounds about right.

Ive got an interesting goal...and its one I actually plan to accomplish in my lifetime!

Anyway, I will hopefully be around for Ferraris 100th anniversary...with quite a few Ferraris myself by then; and to celebrate, I am going to drive one of my Ferraris from LA-New York. Then I will put it on a boat to England, pick it up in London, and drive it across Europe to Maranello for the big anniversary party. I will find the best roads across the continents and drive them the way Enzo intended. '

I dont think my trip will work with a passenger...First off, I gotta put my luggage somewhere! Secondly, They might not have the same passion for the trip as me, and they will add weight through the corners :-) However, Ill pick up any Fchatter for some of the legs.

As for the car, anything Ferrari will work for me. Though I supposed I would love to do it in my dream Ferrari -the F40.

That will be fun, indeed...but my best Ferrari experience is going to be something else. I have had the opportunity to ride in many member's Ferraris and to thank them for their kindness and friendship, they will ride in (and drive) mine! Dinner is on me that night as well. Just give me 10 years!

A hostile takeover of the company once Maserati flops terribly.

Picking up my own personal Enzo Ferrari at the factory from Michael Schumacher. Can't get much better than that.
