I belive Daryl on this forum has a TR with painted skirts... I can attest that Daryl's car is one of the most beautiful cars I have EVER SEEN. I say do it! Daryl's wheels also look great, not too small at all (although I personally would go with more modern wider 18" rubber to increase performance. <f1> If I had a TR that is!) Best! Ben. |

I almost painted the side skirts on my Testarossa along with the spoiler, the shop I went was going to charge me 50 dollars an hour in labor but only beacuse I know them for over 16 years and when they told me that to do the job right it was gonna cost $2,000 then I said forget it really it is not worth it. I agree that the 512TR looks fat and heavy, but then again I don't like the 512TR looks as much as the original design. I think the original car with the sides in black looks like a lighter car, and the 16 inch single nut wheels that I got remind me of a Formula one car, when was the last time you saw a Formula car with huge rims and little low profile tires, if a Formula one car had anything like 18 inches rims then it would look like a carriage. So spend the money better on a k40 radar system so you can drive fast as hell and leave the poseurs in the dust with thier stupid carriage looking testarossa and ugly as hell color coded front grill, now thats sad. |

It's all in preference. My nose and sideskirts are painted and I love the look. Unless you are going to show and want the points, paint it if you want and enjoy. |

Billy what rims are those? They compliment the car beautifully. In the bottom pic I thought you had some big ass ricer-type wing on there, then I realized it was just the angle of the cars in the back, hehehe |

I did it to my car and I think it looks great. It makes the car look newer and lower to the ground. Fifty years from now when someone uncovers my car the last thing on their mind would be if I painted the side skirts or not. If you like the way it looks I say go for it. Here is a pic of mine |

I did it to my car which was black. I painted the nose as well and I changed the wheels to speedline 3 piece larger diameter to match the 512. I loved the look and the car handled better with the tire and wheel change. I never entered the car for display anywhere and that was not my concern. I sold the car after 3 years and had no problems at all. I got the original sales pice I paid and sold the tires and wheels seperately. Its your car, I don't see the big deal on this one. |

My TR is black metallic, with original skirts in semi-gloss or satin black. So I guess I don't have this problem. I like the look of TRs either way. Some excellent points made about "slimming" the car with black skirts and making the car "appear lower" with painted skirts. Value may be affected unless the potential next owner also wants the skirts painted. It wouldn't be difficult to return them to stock prior to selling the car anyway. |

I prefer the black skirts on the early TR's, FWIW. If I accidentally scuff the front lower spoiler lip, I just whip out the can of black bumper spray and it looks new again. |

I don't mind it on the 348 because they all look the same so you can't tell. the tr's actually changed body styles so it looks like you are pretending to be a newer car. not looking for a flame war |

Jim -- To me, what you just said is your real opinion while what you said before was your opinion as derived from someone else opinion. I'm not trying to be a , its just a pet peeve. Luke. |

honestly one reason I like black TR's is that you get the old shape and style without the contrast of the black skirt to red paint. Problem solved. However, in person any TR is just breath taking. |

Lucas he asked for opinions and we are stating them. Per Ferrari they made the TR with black skirts to give the car a "thin" appearance. They changed it on the 512 to painted body panels to make the car appear closer to the ground. That is my main complaint about the 512. I think it looks fat and heavy. They painted the skirts, rounded the nose up and rounded the buttresses on the back so it looks like a oval rather than the sleek TR lines. But that is just my opinion. |

Yeah, Jordan, if you want to fit in don't try to be, <gasp>, different and "weird!" You do want to fit in, don't you??? Quotes: ------- "People do it on the 348 series, but it looks okay because the later models came factory that way." <-- If Ferrari doesn't think it's right, then it's not. "Also keep in mind, that if you ever show the car at a Ferrari concours you will loose big points for this since it is not original." <--- see above. ------ Paint the damn things, they're ugly in black! Luke. |

Jordan, I am not crazy about the idea myself. I think that it looks a little funny on the earlier TRs because of the diameter of the rims. It seems that painting the skirts draws a lot more attention to the wheels and it makes them look too small. If you notice in the photos below, neither car has stock rims on it. The 512 TR had bigger rims which look better with body colored skirts. Just my opinion. |

I don't like it. 512's and TR's do not have same body work. People do it on the 348 series, but it looks okay because the later models came factory that way. The common person will not know the difference, but a trained eye will. |

Personally, I don't like the look. Also keep in mind, that if you ever show the car at a Ferrari concours you will loose big points for this since it is not original. This could also result in less $$ when you sell. |

Also, do a search on FChat for a picture or request for someone to post one. One other suggestion, if you do paint the skirts you will have to deal with periodic touch ups. With the black, you never have to touch it. Even if you did it would be easy to respray yourself. |

Are the skirts on the TR exactly the same size as on the 512TR? The TR's I see with painted skirts don't look quite right... My vote would be to keep it original, even though I do like the color coded skirts. |

Jordan, I had my TR for 4 years. Great car! I often thought of doing it but wanted to keep it original; so I never did it. If you do the side shirts you may also want to consider doing the front spoiler and rear bumpers also. The skirts do not come off. Try to finid a picture of a TR done like this first. The 512 TR's all have the skirts colored to match the body. |

Friends, I was wondering what the general consensus on painting the sideskirts on earlier TRs? Are the skirts removable if you ever wanted to change them back? Does it typically impede value? Cost estimate? I do not own one yet, but I am curious. Thanks, Jordan |
