That was back in the days of lead based paint and Barchetta was the brightest they could get red to be. As lead was removed from paints, red was able to become brighter and evolved into what people now believe is "Ferrari Red". Look back over any of the older classic red Ferraris like the 212 and you will see it was much darker than what we see on production cars today unless they are ordered in Rosso Barchetta. Dr. I. M. My 550 was sold under the label "Barchetta Red" (after the color used on the 550 barchetta, I guess). You can see the difference between the standard red.
