Hubert.... Exactly...Alberta (where I live and work) has the worst system and used to be a dumping ground for "title washing". But now the government has really revised the procedure for OOP (out of province) inspections and it's not as easy as it used to be. Cars have to be aligned, checked for airbag replacement, frame damage, and a whole host of other things now. The best part however is that the government if coming down big time on fraudulent operators, fining and actually jailing people. It was long overdue IMHO. Tom... The entire front end was also redone. Peter... That car is also well known, and it could be the same one, as your story is like Tom's. |

Kds/Tom, I remember a few years ago, an exotic car rental place in Victoria B.C. had a yellow 355 Spyder that was totalled. Must be the same car (?). Apparently, a girlfriend/wife got it for the day, as a birthday present for the boyfriend/husband. Which, not too much longer after getting it that he rolled it... |

On the topic of shady cars, Vancouver has the worst used car dealers in Canada. Apparently one of their tricks is to register a B.C. car with accidents in Alberta then reregister it in B.C. so that it has a clean record. |

Interesting, I bought a BMW 540 recently in Vancouver, BC, and imported it into the States. I ran a ICBC check (BC government insurance system) to see the accident history/claims, AND got a letter from BMW Canada testifying to both there were no financial liens on the car (was financed by them) and that the car met all USA EPA/DOT specifications (except for the speedo I had the local Vancouver BMW dealer change). Was a pretty speedy process, and no problems with US Customs, (except for that fricken' duty they charge!) Dave |

A couple of years ago I did an article for one of the papers in Canada on Ghost Vin's and Stolen/Salvaged cars getting their titles washed or replaced. Canada is not the only place where this can happen it is easy to do it in the states too but by being a smart consumer and checking all the info you can save yourself a lot of grief. Even CarFax has holes so try to confirm in writing what the items are on the title. |

There are dealers here in Seattle that routinely bring in cars from Canada. The dealers are known to sell their cars as immaculate when in fact they have serious problems. |

Another concern on Canadian cars; There title system is very weak and there are a number of lender owned cars that are being legally imported and titled here, and then later reported stolen in Canada only to get flagged in the NCIC system. I very nearly got burned like this on a car aquired through a legitimate dealer in NY. It had a clean CARFAX, EPA and DOT paper and a clean US state title. If the dealer wasn't reputable...I'd have lost over $80k...as it was, he eat it !! So you need to be very careful on the Canadian cars...according to the law enforcement people here in CA and in NY, it is a very common activity. |

I received this e-mail today and felt that it would be an appropriate post for the membership base here to be aware of, as the vendors opportunities in Canada are now limited, since the truth has come out and he may attempt to market the vehicle in the US as a result. 1998 355 Spider Fly Yellow on Black ZFFXR48A4W0112254 14,500 km Canadian spec car As of yesterday's date, the owner of this vehicle has attempted to trade it in at dealerships "WITHOUT DECLARING" two accidents totalling approximately $100K CAD in damage to the vehicle. Basically the entire front end was destroyed. The current owner lives in Edmonton, Alberta. The car was originally registered in Ontario, then BC and now in Alberta. There are no claims showing against the vehicle with the BC government insurance board, and the CARFAX is also showing as clean. FWIW....caveat emptor... |
