Risking trashing a wheel or much worse to play with some 30 year old rubber??

If you want to burn cheap rubber, by some some Kumhos or buy some discards from an autocrosser. Or just go buy some take-offs from any car... the lack of tread is no biggee since I assume you won't be driving it in the rain. There is no good reason to be driving a car on 30 year old rubber unless the car is worth less than the rubber.

Richard, I have a set of four very good shape used tires on hold at my mechanics place. But I want to skid these tires around a bit first. They seem to be holding on fine.

I will say I am leary of going any faster than 80mph, since while I think I can recover from a disintegrating tire at 40Mph around a curve, I think much less about losing a tire at 100mph on the freeway.

Jim: Thanks, although I obviously didn't take that photo myself (busy driving at the time)! The GT4 is for sale, so I probably ought to revise the profile and substitute a shot of the 348C.

Owned a "chairs & flares" 246 GTS for almost 17 years, and it was a delight to drive. Mine was pretty reliable, so I never had any major service issues. Only sold it because I never drove it anymore, having devoted my spare time to track events for the past few years.

Tony,

Please get new tires! I pray you don't blow out and wreck my old "baby!" You are scaring me man!

on the expensive to maintain question, I can't comment since I have not owned other F's. The Dino ain't cheap because parts are a bit of exercise to locate. But they are easy labour-wise to repair, once the possibly more expensive parts are located. My mechanic knows this car backwards and forwards, and makes it all seem very easy to fix.

I make sure I hit hard only the turns in which I have the other lane to recover from... but I have slowly built up speed on turns based on feeling the response from the tires. They are original, a bit of dry rot evident, and the rubber is quite hard ('duro' in italian really describes it), yet they perform well.
I have been warned by another Dino owner who pushed his old tires, which then disintegrated on him. But so far I don't feel that will happen to mine (famous last words).

What a great car though. I have a 2000 S500 which possibly handles better from a technical point of view. Yet there is something about the old leather smell, the sound, the closeness to the ground, the beautiful curve of the fenders in view as you scope turns... Ferrari cars are just more pure fun.
I still haven't had the slightest motivation to fix the radio in the Dino, since I just never get the inclination to do anything else but remain totally involved with operating the car.

I love the Dinos alway have. I have drivern them a couple of times and long to own one one day, i am very much tempted to sell both my F cars becourse for an average example in the uk you would have to pay around 40ish, for one in first class around 90ish, so both would have to go. I think with me it started when i first saw Tony Curtise drive one in the Persauders, wached it every sunday with me little fingerless driveing gloves on (i was only 7) i wish driveing gloves made a comeback. With me its nostalga big time.

I have a 246GT. They may only have 195 horsepower, and I haven never driven any other F car, but the Dino is a true driving machine.

Yesterday afternoon, I took it around some of the SF bay area's nice curvey roads. Roads where you don't do more than 30-50MPH because they are tight curves. And this car is a dream, working with you to keep tight around the corners, up/down shifting, absolutely neutral handling. I finally pushed it really hard around a corner and the front tires understeered a little, mainly due to their 30 year old age and being really hard rubber I think.

Anyway, each time I drive it in a country road scenery, I fall more in love with this car.

I am not sure a good minivan can outrun a Dino. I can easily get 0-60 in the spec'd 7 seconds. But let's not promote the Dino as a speed racer. This is a car for looks that also is a blast to manhandle around twisty country/mountain roads - that's where it provides max enjoyment. If you live in the midwest plains, opt for a v8/v12.

Dinos are truely beautiful and handle nicely but a good minivan can outrun them. They only have 195 HP. I had a 246 GTS.

I love the dino, gt is most beautifull than gts, but i prefer gts for summer.
I would like to read opinions of people that have drieven a dino. Is most fun than a 328 gts.
Is the dino most expensive to repair than a 328?
