You know, I must have asked my source at least a dozen times whether he was sure it was an Enzo or not, and he insisted it was! Some Google searches confirm it was a 360. Sorry for the Enzo misinformation. The duty was waived, though, entirely due to influence-peddling. But Fiat has since agreed to pay it to avoid the negative publicity. So it's a free Modena for the cricket star, not an Enzo. Maybe he should have held out! |

I believe it was a 360, and FIAT intervened to allow the cricketer to keep the car. http://www.guardian.co.uk/india/story/0,12559,1018124,00.html http://www.x-stream.co.uk/sport/365/cricket/news/2003/08/15/9660.html Inquiry over cricketer's Ferrari Reuters in New Delhi Thursday August 14, 2003 The Guardian An Indian court has asked Sachin Tendulkar, the country's star cricketer, and the government to explain why he did not have to pay 11.3m rupees (170,000) in duty for a Ferrari given to him by the carmaker, reports said yesterday. Prompted by front-page coverage of Tendulkar driving his duty-free red Ferrari 360 Modena home after it arrived at the airport, the Delhi high court launched its own action to question the duty waiver, the Press Trust of India reported. In a country where cricket stars rank with or above movie idols, the government waived the normal 120% customs duty on the car given to him by Fiat, which Tendulkar promotes in India. Tendulkar, regarded by many as the world's best batsman, is a passionate car lover and owns a number of luxury vehicles. He could not immediately be contacted for comment. Tendulkar Escapes Paying Car Tax After causing much consternation by opting not to pay the import duty for his new Ferrari, Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar has escaped payment with the Fiat motor company agreeing to pay the amount on his behalf. A huge outcry came from Sachins fans when newspapers leaked the story over the Indian finance minister granting Tendulkar exemption from paying customs duty for the US$163,000 vehicle, which was presented to the Indian batsman last year. Tendulkar, one of the countrys richest sportsman with multi-million dollar endorsements for a range of products, was relieved of paying the 11 million rupees (US$350,000) customs duty, which also prompted the courts to get involved in the matter. However, in a bid to try and bring an end to the whole fiasco, the Fiat motor company has agreed to pay the amount for Tendulkar. "Tendulkars contribution to the Indian sport and global cricket has clearly established his credentials as an icon in the world of sport," company spokesman Nikhil Dey told the Press Trust of India. "Fiat India ... would pay the import duty for Sachins Ferrari as the gift was meant to felicitate and honour him for his achievement." The Ferrari was presented to Tendulkar by Formula One champion Michael Schumacher last year when Indian maestro overtook Don Bradmans record of 29 Test centuries

In MicroShaft's usual way, ol' Bill Gates is still trying to displace Linux in India. Has Rubbermaid made a product launch in India yet? Dole? Clarion?

I am sure you all know that the Show and Display exemption came about shortly after Transport Minister Mineta had some sweet nothings whispered into his ear by the CEO of Rubbermaid and Bill Gates and the billionaire founder of BET, right? |

Same thing happened in Argentina, 1 of a very short list of Argentine Billionaires bought an F50 back in the 90s but he kept it in Italy. When his friends, including the Pres, asked him why he didnt take the F50 to Buenos Aires he answered the 100% + tax, a short while later he brought the F50 in tax free |

India has a 300% duty on imported cars unless you have lived abroad for a certain lenght of time and are moving back permanently, in which case it goes down to a 50% duty. Found out recently that a very famous Indian cricketer named Sachen Tendulkar was given an Enzo as payment for a Fiat ad to promote some new car being launched in India. It took 8 minutes to shoot the ad, since Fiat was happy was happy with the first take. Schumi's in the ad too, which has now made Schumi a household name in India. Mr. Tendulkar kept his car in Italy while he fought for an exemption to the duty (dunno on what grounds, but knowing the right people in India is like, well, knowing the right people anywhere). He finally pulled the right strings, didn't have to pay the duty, and an Enzo is now buzzing the streets of Mumbai (Bombay). The car is also autographed by Schumi. 8 minutes of work, a $2 million exemption, and there you have it.
