Sean, has the car had its 30k service done yet? The cam belts would be 26 years old now if not. |

Andrew - It was a Sunday and memorial day was Monday, so he was to fax the paperwork Tuesday morning. I guess I should have insisted that day for the paperwork, but I am one of the few left that actually trust people! |

Don't risk driving it home without the clutch and water pump done! Just get it fixed and drive it home. The best drive I've ever had was the 1700 mile to bring my car home. You're already in spend money mode, just do it right. |

The mechanic said $2,600 to do the clutch and water pump. They're actually still fiddling with the clutch but he's pretty sure it will need one. I think they were having a few issues with the clutch cable. Or, I can ship it back and save myself $1,000 doing it myself....I can't say it's worth the 6-7 weeks of driving I'll lose for that $1,000. Not to mention the next club meeting is on 11-1 (my birthday) and I'd have the car there...also I have to wait 3-weeks for it....I think I'll call and just say fix it. Then I can drive it home (adventure story for future generations..right?). |

He backed out by failing to produce the vehicle title and inspection (for the finance people), he never actually cashed my check, and the car disappeared from the showroom grounds and never returned. The car's whereabouts became sketchy, the seller was totally unmotivated in fixing the car (if, in fact, the car was ever leaking oil), and wasn't bothering to keep me posted as to what was happening with the car. A total hose-job. Autonet Automotive Group/Brian D'Alfonzo from Levittown, PA - avoid like the plague.

That sucks Mike and Jerry! Mike- if you actually went to the dealer & gave the check & signed papers, how did they back out? If they backed out at that point, that could have happened regardless of if it was an ebay purchase or a "regular" purchase I guess, but boy that that stink! I've never heard of something that bad! Thank's for posting the ebay stories- only once did I see a car on Ebay that I was seriously interested in, but I waited until after the auction than contacted the guy. I wanted to see the car in person, and flew from NJ to Florida. The car was not up to my "standard", so I passed on it & never looked back. Took the day off from work & flew Jet Blue pretty cheaply. Sean, being as you already had the PPI done, it sounds like your beyond this point, and should be good to go! (although I admit I am always anxious until I actually get a newly purchased car in the garage..) |

Just be careful - I bought a 355 off ebay before and also agreed on the price and I also made a 25K deposit - The guy claimed he would immediately take the auction down - Of course he waited and sold it to someone else for 5K more - I got my money back though. |

My 'ebay auction' was concluded via Buy-It-Now as well.....I appeared at the dealership in person less than 24 hours after the auction and signed Bill-Of-Sale paperwork with the seller, face to face. I handed him my check in-person, as well and personally test-drove the car for 30 mins. I felt the sale was a 'done deal' from my standpoint. Boy was I wrong....as of a few days ago, the seller removed his account from Ebay and I cannot post negative feedback. But I did get my funds back.... |

While I go surfing on ebay all the time, it is simply another advertising tool and tool to bring buyers and sellers together. When dealing with big ticket items (cars) you must do your homework. I don't think ebay will take away from dealers or using the old word of mouth, hemmings, and Ferrari newsletter classifieds to find cars, but its merely another tool to use (and fun looking at all the pictures of the posted cars too!) In this case, it sounds like Sean used it correctly and did his homework! Sean, forgive me as I'm not too familar with the mechanics of the car you just bought, but with all the labor to do the water pump, can they do the timing belts so you know you don't have to worry about them for some time? I know at least on BMW's and porsches, they always do the water pump with the timing belts because of the labor just to get in there even if the water pump appears to be fine. That's why I was wondering if it make sense to do the belts since the pump needs replacing and they will be in there anyway... I bet you can't wait to get the car! |

Andrew, So far everything is good. He was honest and open about the car. I faxed him back a signed PO and fed-ex'd a check for a deposit and he closed the auction. Also, after we agreed to a "handshake price" he said no matter what happened with the auction (he was on the road and could not close it for a few hours) the price is the price. I'm waiting for a price on the WP and Clutch. I'm guessing it will be cheaper to ship it and do it myself. I just did not want to wait for 3-weeks. E-bay is not bad. You just need to do your homework and use your brain. I tried to get another car from St.Louis but the seller was obviously waiting for a less educated buyer to come along and pay way to much for it so I said see-ya. |

Great car Sean, great price too! Where are the nay sayers to eBay? Here is a fellow chatter that saw one advertised and closed the deal. I guess eBay is not always bad right?

Sean- how is that seller? I have seen may cars which that seller puts up, and he always takes pictures at his house...does he run the business out of the house, or is it a regular car dealer? Ron- the Buy it now option is for you to do just that- basically you as a buyer say "forget about the auction, I'll take the car at this price" which basically ends the auction then and there. The auctions usually have reserves, or minimum prices. If the car doesn't bid up to the minimum price, the auciton has not been successfull. Even if the auction ends and you are the highest bidder (you "won" the auction), if your highest bid was for $20,000 on a 1997 550 marinello and it says "reserve not met", you don't get the car. Often, people will have a reserve price that is set not too much below the "buy it now" price. You are correct though, it seems Sean got a great price that was a lot below the "buy it now" price. Good luck with the car Sean, and let us know how it is! Are you paying for the new clutch & waterpump?? Can they do the timing belts while they are in there doing the water pump??? |

Ron, My friend told me nice move as well. He said, "There is one pissed off e-bay bidder out there right now. This is win win for you and lose-lose for the competition". It had met reserve at $22.5 and the bidding was at $23k 6hrs before close. (note: the seller stated auction would end if item sold early). |

I just learned something new about how E-bay sales are done.. It states "buy now 32900" but you paid $24500... Now that is what I call beating the system... Congrats on your wonderful find.... |

Don't celebrate until the car is in your garage.....I was right where you are four weeks ago - I wrote a check, filled out a bill of sale, did alittle financing paperwork, etc. Everything was ready until the finance people wanted to schedule an appt. for an inspection of the car to validate the VIN and take a few pics. Everything went south after that - first, the inspection made the seller very nervous. Then, the car was moved off-site "to a warehouse", along with the vehicle's title. Then, before the inspection happened, the car developed 'an oil leak' that required shipping the car somewhere else for repair - the vehicle title never materialized. Three weeks later, still no sign of the car or even a status of possible repairs.....seller got more and more evasive, so I had to cancel my check and start over. Ebay sellers SUCK!!!!! I hope your experience goes much better. |

Way to go, Sean! You'll have to change your nic to "Grand Theft Auto" - as you stole that car at that price - clutch, water pump and all. It's a rock-solid GTB... and it's yours. |

Chris, Yes, for the most part. I'll have another talk tomorrow with the PPI mechanic about the clutch and WP, but I'm comfortable after talking with him some more on Friday after I talked with Chris Hill. I also talked with Keith Williams (his dad built my race engines). In fact, he's coming with me to drive it back from Phili (~1100 miles). If you're home next Sunday, I may have to take a drive out South so I can show it off and act like a new father! Jim, yes I paid $24,500. In fact, he has another buyer lined up if I decide to walk. |

Actually last week but I was waiting for PPI, etc. to finish up. Now it's done everything is A-OK. The shop that did the PPI is going to give me a cost to do the Water Pump (not unexpected) and clutch (also, not unexpected) and I'll fly out Friday and drive it home. I was so damn excited last week I almost wet my pants...well, not really. My wife has been so cool about this. She was genuinly excited for me and said today, "I hope this all works out and you get the car". Well, it did. She also asked me where our fist date would be but I kept coming up with all these "Well, I don't know if I want to park it there". I don't even have it and I'm already paranoid about something happening to it! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2436334536&category=6212&rd=1 $24,500 |
