Thanks Tommy and Crusing. I certainly want to "know" my car. I've done some tinkering/minor repairs on it before so
I'm sure I could learn these things.

Anyway, just in case you guys are interested, here are some quotes: (parts/labor included): (I'll not name names except for one.)

$460- a European auto specialist shop
$520- same as above.
$540- authorized Ferrari dealer
$850- used/independent Ferrari dealer
$1000-1100- authorized Ferrari dealer.
(I paid a total of $718.00 for mine)

The best quote is $540, from Steve Harris Imports. (I wish I live close to this dealership!).

If the car is already up on jack stands, changing the brake fluid is a no-brainer also. Really.

Ron:

I was a bit timid before I did mine. But it is a piece of cake. First of all any service station could do the fluids for you. Oil change is just draining and refilling and brake fluid is on brakes that are also used on Mercedes I think. Really simple. You don't need to get hosed. I bought tools jackstands a jack and had a lot of fun learning about my car for less than the dealer was going to charge. I have full faith that you can handle the job!

Mr. Vallejo at the risk of proverbially "tooting my own horn" check the service section - I posted a pictorial on 328 oil change. Simple procedure; with AGIP or synthetic oil runs about $65 but Castrol semi-synthetic about $45.

Brake, coolant, and gearbox changes later this year will document also. You'll save significant amounts doing these yourself & learn about (read: enjoy) car more in process.

Regular oil change with Dino oil about $150 from independant, the extras you had done @ 99.00/hr + fluids sound about right for a dealer for 600

Ron, just back the car up on ramps (Wal-Mart) for the oil change.

I've gathered enough info to do my own oil change next time. Am not sure if I can easily do the rest. It is the coolant and brake fluid change that is more laborious, hence, more costly.

By the way. For all of you who change your own brake fluid and use a friend in the car: I just bought one of those "power bleeders". It was the best $50 I have ever spent on a tool. Just throw in a couple of liters of your favorite fluid (I use ATE Racing Blue), screw on the cap, pump it up to about 10lbs and just walk around the car braking open the lines one at a time. 20 min job not counting the jack stands. Easy easy and no more calling your wife or girlfriend out to the driveway.

I just finished this job last weekend. I was wondering how much I saved. It is a really good idea to do as many simple things yourself as possible. The savings is big time but you are going to get your hands dirty. This evening I replaced my plugs for a total cost of twenty bucks. How much would the Ferrari dealer charge for this parts and labor? $150?

Agree with your gut-feeling, Dave.

Prior to the service, I gave it some thought. There are exotic car dealers in St. Louis that claim they do Ferrari's. I don't feel comfortable with this option. The nearest F-dealer is at least 300 miles (Chicago) and a Lamborghini dealer that works on Ferrari's (for a fact) is also about 300 miles away. I don't really have the free time to drive back and forth, and besides, hauling the car to either of these places will just add to the cost. So I decided it would be best to take it to a nearest shop that has experience w/ Ferrari's. Hence, my decision to take it there.

I have a feeling I paid "more," but I am happy
with the turn out. I also have piece of mind knowing that the mechanic is knowledgeable about my car (or Ferrari's for that matter).

Thanks for your inputs, so far. Pls. keep it coming guys.

I am no mechanic, but I can change the gearbox oil and motor oil/filter in 2 hours easy, using jacks and jackstands. The coolant and brake fluid change would probably take me two more hours, though I have never actually done it. I would guess they are padding that by at least 50%. But we are confusing "book time" and actual time. They may be charging you what the Ferrari dealer "labor rates book" tells them to charge. I would hazard to guess that a more reasonable charge would have been 4 to 4.5 hours; though it may actually only take an experienced technician 2 to 3 hours to perform.

Hi Dave. The fluids didn't cost a lot. Looking at the receipt, it looks like they worked on the car for about 6 hours (2 each for brake and coolant change; and 2 for motor and transmission oil change).
Their rate was $99/hr. So I guess that's were most of bill came from.

Well I do my own tinkering, But...
Sounds like they charged you for 8 hrs of service.
Either they are very very slow,
or they used $500.00 brake fluid.

For those who don't tinker with their cars,
do you have a ballpark figure of the cost of having the aforementioned (motor-, gear oil, brake, coolant) done at a dealer (or independent shop)?

I had mine just done in STL (Brentwood Volvo- they used to be a Ferrari dealer until 2 years ago but they still service f-cars). I paid $660 plus although I supplied the motor & gear oil and the UFI oil filter.

I am very pleased with their service and won't have second thoughts bringing my car back to them. But I am just curious as to "how much" it costs you guys for the same service...for comparison. Just curious.

Thanks.
