Terry - It looks like you will be getting a beautiful car with a well documented service history. Congratulations! I'm sure you will be very happy. Just watch out for a bitter person named Craig - He hates 308's!!!

A word of caution Terry. I shipped my car back from Chicago to San Francisco. Read the fine print, cuz mine said they are not responsible for damages or items lost or stolen from the car. Mine was an open transport and it came back filthy with sand and gravel on it. Lucky for me it all washed off with no damage. Unlucky for me was the tool kit was stolen and the money in my ashtray was gone too. They didnt even put the ashtray back in its place. I know it was stupid to leave money in the ashtray but it was only a little over 40.00. Losing the tool kit was hard to swallow.

I'd suggest you get together a list of ALL the things you want checked out on the inspection. Otherwise, you might be surprised what you get. I have a copy of a really comprehensive list I'd be happy to fax to you to give you some ideas.

congrats,
car looks awesome in the pictures. If you do not want to drive it home ship it enclosed carrier. Horseless or Exotic transports or some of the others. Keyword search will get you all the phone numbers.

Congrats on finding your car. I know the feeling. I just had mine delivered, and they only charged me $750 for a 10 hour delivery in an enclosed trailer. It was especially worth it since it was detailed before delivery. A trip that long especially warrants an enclosed delivery. Perhaps if you talk to the Atlanta Ferrari dealer, they can arrange something for you that's a better deal with the understanding you'll be bringing some business their way. If the car looks great, don't risk hauling it across country while exposed.

I wish I could drive it back. Its not an issue of the miles or whether the car should make it, its just that I cant take 3 or 4 days away right now to do it. I would prefer enclosed transport, but outside doesn't bother me a ton if its coming direct and its insured. Enclosed does not seem worth double the price to me. I do have a video of the car that was just shot. I will also shoot more when I go out to see it.

Ill Try Scottsdale Ferrari about the inspection. The seller is also going to a Ferrari club event this weekend and is going to ask around about a shop qualified to do the inspection. I will be paying and the report will be coming to me only.

Call Jim Summer at Scottsdale Ferrari. He is an honest guy and will give it to you straight. Have the seller drop it off there and as long as you are paying for the report it will be sent to you.
Also, maybe someone in the local ferrari club would be willing to help that knows more about these models. Good luck, I also have seen that car and it looked decent on the website to me.

If you get it, just fly out and drive it home. No better way to get to know a car. Logged 2500 miles in November retrieving the Pantera.
Regarding shipping, for that distance enclosed will be $1200-$1500, and open carrier will be $400-$600. Well worth the extra for enclosed. Ferrari sitting atop an open trailer will attract a lot of unwanted attention that you have no control over. If you do ship, make your own complete detailed video of the car just in case.
Is the car a concours show queen? No. Then drive it and enjoy.

Yes, the bluish color is surface oxidation. Remove the muffler and take to a chrome/polishing shop. Call them first for a quote, don't use the "F" word. ha ha

Actually, that blue color is highly prized in the hot-rod world. personally, I would leave it. And, you can promote it with frequent rub-downs of WD-40. (Cold of course.)

My father was an airline pilot, so I can fly for next to nothing... plus I got a zillion frequent flyer miles. So, I am going to try to go and see it next weekend. Before that I am going to have a shop do a complete inspection including compression and leakdown test plus to help identify everything the car needs. The seller agreed to the auction sale being conditional upon inspection. If its a "dud", I'll pass.

Anyone know if the stainless steel Tubi muffler will polish shiny again? Currently its got the bluish discoloration from heat.

I have to find a reputable shop to do the inspection.....

Terry, do yourself a favour and spend some money to look at the car in person with a mechanic of your choice. The price of two airline tickets is a whole lot cheaper than buying a dud. Just my advice. Oh yeah, congratulations!!! Feels great doesn't it?

Terry,
I've been tracking this car since it was put up for auction. I like the web-site, pictures and description of the car. I can't give you a whole lot of tech advice but I know Dupont and HMN web-sites list a variety of movers and inspectors. I had a great experience with Intercity Lines; not sure if they're nation wide, though. They were very reasonable, $500 from Forza in CT to Prince George, VA (an eight hour drive) and enclosed, of course.

Beautiful car and I hope it works out for you. Dane

Uhhhhhhh I bought a Ferrari! Or at least I am going to be buying one provided it passes the pre-purchase inspection. High bidder on ebay for a 1977 308 GTB. Check out the details on the car here:

http://www.geocities.com/az308gtb/index.htm

Need some help from FC if possible...

1. Anyone know a good shop that can do a complete pre-purchase inspection? I want a compression test, leakdown test and complete evaluation of the car. Its located in Scottsdale AZ.

2. Anyone know where to find a good deal on car shipping? I will need to have it shipped from Scottsdale to Atlanta, GA. I am hoping to get this done cheap. Taking and picking the car up from a depot is no problem.

Any other input on what I should have checked during the inspection? The seller sent me video on the car and has been very forthcoming about condition. A really nice guy. The car looks and sounds AWESOME in the video! It has 46k miles, 5K and 3 years since a full service with belts, clutch ect. It had a carb rebuild and waterpump only 2 months ago. I spoke with the sellers mechanic who indicates the car is in good shape and needs nothing mechanically now.

The A/C does not work... compressor is off the car. I will be upgrading this. May tackle it myself or may take it somewhere.

What do you guys think?!?!

Terry
