Mark,

I misread. Simple solution - I'll go buy a can and find out.

I should have said when the fuel light comes on and then siphon the tank to see how much is left. 5 gallon gas cans are pretty cheap at just about any auto parts store and have marks to show exactly how many gallons there are. According to the manual you should have only ~5 gallons. If it's a problem with the fuel sender being out of whack you should get ~10 gallons. Pour the gas back into the car and then go fill it up. Add the amount of gas siphoned to how much it took to fill it up and if it's less than 30 gallons (or whatever tank capacity is) then the problem might be the tank breather.

Adnaan: funny story! :-) Do you have pictures of the Z1? I've always been fascinated by those cars.

Reminds me of something really embarrasing. I used to own a BMW z1. The fuel tank seemed to pressure up as I drove it. Wasnt really a problem as long as I slowly opened the fuel cap to release the air first.

One day I pulled into a gas station. Pulled the handle and the door slid down. Pure class. Anyway as always people checking out the car when they saw the doors drop. Trying to play it cool I walked to the rear and spun the fuel cap a bit too fast. Petrol shot out of the tank of my car and almost covered me! Very emarrasing, but I dont think anyone saw.

And all because I was too busy posing to remember to release the air...

Mike,

You are much more brave than I. 52 miles post light? I've done a shade under 45 so far. Again, thats when I hit the 20 gallons.

I think it's time to starve my car just to beat you! :-)

As for Dave - I swear, as soon as I make it out to Houston (I know, I know), I'm going to steal his car long enough to run it dry and try filling it myself!!!

21.8 Gallons!!!! New Personal Best - 10/24/03. Fuel light came on - drove 52 more miles - needle on E and put in 21.8 gallons. Did I really still have 8.2 gallons in the tank or after filling it? Or did I now have 22 gallons in the 30 gallon tank (with the guage showing full vs 2/3rds.)?

Besides Dave who put in 29 litres can any 550 owner top 21.8?

Just out of curiosity... is there any reason why someone couldn't siphon their tank to see exactly how much is left?

Mike: EXACT same issue here. I to this day do not understand if the needles are inaccurate, the fuel senders bad, or what.

Who knows...I'd like to be able to claim more than 10mpg per tank. assuming it's 27 gallons, I'm doing ~280 miles per tank.

Dan - I think Dave put in 29 litres. :-)

Are we 550 owners suppose to believe that there are still 10 gallons in the car every time we fill up? Even though we drove it 40 miles after the gas light went on (which per my read on the manual goes on with 5 gallons left). Would seem a bit silly to gas up with a third of a tank left everytime.

Go figure.

I ask again - do we really have 10 gallons still in the tank every time we fill up? Or are we empty and only able to put 20 gallons in due to heat, time of day, type of nozzle?

I have filled up at every temperature and different times of day, on different slopes at different gas stations with different pumps and nozzels yet can't get over 20.5 gallons when I fill up.

I would enjoy a 30% reduction in trips to the gas station. I am driving the heck out of this thing and am going to the gas station every third day.

Anyone car to revist this - a mystery to me?

Bart,
maybe the breath pipe form the fuel tank is blocked and not allowing the fuel to flow. The pipe runs to atmosphere, like a over flow pipe..

Norman: adventures, huh? :-)

Mike: You and me both! Gas light came on today (I purposely went about as far as I could, maybe one 'needle-width' from empty...managed to put in a shade over 20 gallons. The fuel sender must be totally out of whack.

I don't know HOW Dave managed the 29 or whatever he said he did.

No problems with the 575. I always use the slowest fuel flow allowed by the pump. In case that makes a difference.

Bart. I actually had that problem a few times. The first time it happened it overflowed because the nozzle didn't stop automatically. Air must have gotten in or something because then the gas kept welling out of the tank and made a real mess. Actually quite embarrassing. It happened a few more times, but inconsistently.

I dont have that problem Bart - the only problem I have is the previously described inability to ever get much more than 20 gallons into the 30 gallon tank. My personal best is 21.2 gallons.

Not had any problems - in the brief time that I have had the car. I tend not to fill it all the way anyway.

No problem like that. Sometimes the pump doesn't stay all the way in because of those springly sleeves around the nozzle, but that's generally when the automatic pump holder stops as well.

Sounds like a problem with the gas station pump, though.

Each time I fill my 550 at the gas station, it overflows. The nozzle does not stop automatically. I have to watch it very closely or I waste alot of gas. It drains down a little hole but I wish the nozzle would stop like it does on my other cars.
Is it just me or do others have this problem with the 550?
