Chris,
Myself and Monte Shalett were the judges for the "supercar" class at the New Orleans event. Aside from the 2 brand spanking new Enzo's,(which were 1 month old), John's car was superb! I especially liked the story about the seat inserts! I was a little taken aback when I found out he traded his F40 for the 288,it just seemed a little like a step backwards to me, but that 288 is one fantastic car!!! He definitely deserved Best of Show! Of course this is not meant as a diss for the other cars. I mean Rolands LM is on a level all by itself! ;-) I absolutely had the best judging assignment!

Dave
BTW, please pass along my congratulations again to him. (he'll remember me as the guy with the 328 who led him back to the hotel. LOL )

Steve. I'm surprised you couldnt fit in the 550. I met Jumbo Elliot of the NFL and he had a 550 with a sepcial seat of course, I think he's even taller than you are. He might be at the Pocono Belle Macchine event next July.

Chuck Schoendorf who attends a lot of the FCA driving events with me, and is a friend, has one. He is from Conn. He brought it to the Glen this summer, but doesn't track it. I cannot fit inside, I am 6'4". I think 5'10" is about right.

So many Ferraris I would love to own or drive but can't get into them. The 288, the F40-I even had Shelton remove the seat and sat on the floor-still no go. Same for the 550/575 and the 456. Wanted a 355 Challenge-no dice. Why are all these beautiful cars built for average height people? Went to look at Marshall Field's Spice-Ferrari (GTP car), absolutely stunning and super quick. Couldn't even get my legs in. Will I never experience the thrill of some of these great cars? Seems I will be limited to the 360 series and its derivatives, or to souped up rice burners (I fit just fine in my Subaru WRX). Luckily I fit fine in my Dino which is my favorite Sunday afternoon car. Oh the agony of being big which I like most of the time but not when it comes to cars.

My friend John Karr's GTO just won best of show at New Orleans this weekend! Not bad for a "driven" car!

Congratulations John!

For me the 288 GTO is my ultimate dream car, its the best looking. If Ford its doing a modern GT40 then why not a modern 288GTO looking ferrari? Now thats a dream. In 84 I was 13 and I saw a GTO pic then in 86 the real thing and in 91 my first Ferrari a 328GTS, why? because of the GTO thats why and nothing else.

They used to be one of my favs, but I don't understand why theres so much hype over them, there basically a 308 on steroids. And I love the 308/288. But they seem to get more buzz than I think they should, Maybe it's just because there rare.

The 288 GTO is definitely my favorite non-12 cylinder car. They have such a well proportioned shape. IMO the F40 is eye-catching but not as timeless. I think the F40 will appear a bit dated in 20 years while the 288 will retain its beauty. Just my opinion - I wish I could afford either.

At the FoW get together this week, one room held an Enzo, F50, F40 and 288 GTO. The 288 had a gorgeous period elegance that made it stand out. And the F40 long has been the car of my dreams.

You're welcome to swing by my pad in it if you get a chance to drive it! I'm only about 1500 miles away, but I'm sure your neighbor wouldn't mind... :-)

Interestingly I just realized I have never driven a 288, I have a very good friend I talk to almost daily that has one, in fact I see his 288 about as often as I see my F40.

I guess I will have to ask to drive it!

Chris - Let me reiterate.

When I say the F40 falls a tiny bit short of the 288, I'm talking about the overall looks based on my narrow-minded view! :-)

I love the F40s, and in fact, is was the Bridgestone magazine ad that came out in 1987, featuring a profile of the F40, that began my love affair with the marque.

When I have created the empire that I hope to someday create, my garage will have on of each car in it.

I hope my oroginal post didn't sound as though I was diparaging (sp?) the F40....

One question: have you had the opportunity to drive a 288, or as least ride in one? If you have, your impressions would be valued....

Strange that my hyperlink didn't work.

Anyway, I love this angle - look how muscular she looks. A truly timeless design. Amazing that it's coming up on 20 years!

The 288 is my absolute favorite Ferrari! I would/will buy one to park next to my 355 if funds were available. Isn't it just the epitome of Italian style and performance?! Every angle of that car is mesmerizing. Awesome!

Always has been one of my favourite cars (of any marque). Heard that if you're over 5'10" you can forget it. Is that true?

There's a real beauty at Symbolic that I ogle every day.

That other guy that wants $750K for his (!!!!) is still trying in the DuPont.

I love a 288, in its purest form it is truly one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

It is truly more rare than a F40 and should be at least twice as much money....

The performance while impressive in its day, is comparable to a 355 or 360. Its 308 origin I think will always haunt it and will keep the prices comparable to F40's.

I do love a 288, and if the bank account allowed it, I would own one... maybe someday!

After reading the F40 thread, I was surprised that no one mentioned the 288 GTO.

Are there any owners here? If so, what are your impressions of the car? Do you drive it regularly? What kind of maintenance issues have you had?

Just wondering, as I feel that, while the F40 is a truly fantastic car, it still falls a tiny bit short of the 288.
