if anyone is interested I am about 65% done with editing my DVD which is filled with exotics and aggressive driving. If anyone has video they want to send me uncompressed digital, digital 8 tapes, or moni-dv, you can do so in the next few weeks and i can edit you in if the footage is usable. I dont need anymore video i have enough for 3 hours of edited material, but if anyone wants in i can see if i can get your clip in there somewhere |

Just an FYI, "The Ferrari Fanatic" documentary I was going to produce, and have Tom Selleck do narration on, took me months of my own time to just cover the logistics... and in the end was going to cost me $40k out of pocket expence just to shoot the treatment.

Hmmm... did not mean to make it sound like an encyclopedic documentary... though I did say "organize" and "document". What I meant was more the kind of personal-love-of-Ferrari stuff that we come to this site for, but done with video aid... we often do that in threads now with pics... less often with video... The main difference would be to create an organization, perhaps a bit encyclopedia-like, to make it easy to find those... rather than just letting them be posted in threads that you have to do searches through to find anything. We could probably accomplish the same by adding a notion of keywords to each thread... any thread with a video gets a "VIDEO" keyword, and then you can add additional keywords for what appears in the video "F40", "Stradale", "Fchatter Comparison", "Tubi exhaust", "Laguna Seca"... then a special "Video Search" feature that lets you find threads that have what you're looking for. Just thinking out loud... any of these things are going to take some work from somebody... so, somebody needs to find a particular concept that really motivates them who is also willing to do the work to make it happen. |

Just for the record, you chaps that are talking about "filming" an event.... Film is a different critter than video, and is Very Expensive to shoot. Ben is spot on about money... It will take a large pocket full to do a "Professional Quality" video. I know, I am in the business. If you just want to run and gun, and throw something together that looks like any hand held home video, then by all means have at it. But a professional quality product starts with a lot of preparation. From scripting, to obtaining releases, to blocking shots, lighting, audio, camera selection, travel costs, the list goes on and on... I would be more than willing to be the DP on this project, but all the ducks would have to be in a row first.

Brian, what you have described is more like a video encyclopedia...personally, I wouldn't bother to watch anything that is a documentary or encyclopedia type project...there is enoufh of that on Speed Channel...I would want to buy video of FERRARI {ACTION}! More about Rendezvous...it was made with the 9 min of leftover tape the director had after another shoot...he drove the car himself and added a soundtrack...it was made in one take. That is the beauty of it. It cannot be staged. |

I've watched Rendezvous a few times and am fully convinced the audio is not real. At some points you see moist (i.e. from the morning dew) pavement, and various different uneven brick surfaces, yet at every turn, the car makes EXACTLY the same tire screaching noise on every different surface! Also, the camera was mounted extremely low, and close to the pavement, thus creating the illusion of speed that was higher than it really was. Don't get me wrong -- I LOVE Rendezvous. It is masterful. But in my personal opinion, not 100% authentic as it is purported to be. |

To the point of many (that producing a professional video is non-trivial), and to the observation of how much enjoyment has been expressed at some relatively low-quality video that's been posted here... I say, instead of trying to produce a full-length movie, let's focus on building a library of videos that: 1) truly illustrate the joy of Ferrari ownership 2) provide useful video footage for Ferrari owners (such as, what different exhausts look and sound like) 3) document the various tracks that we could drive (in-car footage of a full lap with a good driver, in a Ferrari at full song) 4) in depth on unique Ferraris that we'd all be unlikely to see in person (right now, William H's track 512TR comes to mind) 5) member comparisons (two FerrariChatters meet somewhere, trade drives/rides in each other's cars, document each others' opinions and comparisons, video labeled X vs Y #N); could include Ferrari vs non-Fcar 6) documentation of Ferrari races and racecars 7) various professional reviews of the cars, simply collected, and tagged with appropriate credits for the authors and copyright holders (might need to get permissions for this one) All of this we organize in directories of .mpeg's available for download... making them easy to find and browse. Given online delivery, we need only manage online level of quality. Of course, that doesn't mean that some won't be significantly better quality than others... but it does mean the minimum expectations will be lower and the consistency doesn't need to be as high. Further, it wouldn't be a one-shot deal... but rather a living library that can continue to grow over time. Just a thought. |

Going with MikeZ's comment on hitchhicking, what about doing a cross country drive from East Coast to West Coast using FChat's Ferrari's? What I am thinking about is we actually film and time it takes for different F-Chat members to drive their cars from the beggining of their state to the end of their state ( i.e. I drive my 328 along with other F-Chat Members in MA from Boston to RI or NY where I meet up with the next set of F-Chat members and they drive their Ferraris to NJ or PA. And so on until CA). At the end we would see the actual time it took and the number of Ferraris driven. We could use one or more cameras in different Ferrari's thus giving us more footage to edit. Just a thought.

Hmm... potential "plot" could be to interview owners of different Ferraris all over the US - but when you finish with Fcar, you get driven to the next. Almost like hitchhiking back and forth across the country in Ferraris. I'd buy that. |

"Just shoot 8 hours or so of video, Edit it, voice over it." It sounds so easy to say, dosen't it! But production is HARD and EXPENSIVE work. Editing and post alone takes all three of Time, Money, and Skill. By the boat-load. I too have a full uncompressed HD capable effects suite, own all kinds of equipment, etc. and I'd still have to dump $LOTS into something like this just to get it started. It's a good idea, but are you ready for the logistics? Try interning in a production company for a while, and see if you're ready to even 'shoot the video' let alone edit, post, pay the compressionist, mass-produce, market, and sell. There's a LOT that goes into a feature. That's why they cost $2-200mil. |

I could edit it. I am pretty good with digital editing and wouldn't mind doing it. But, I don't think you guys realize just how much footage it takes to make a good 5 min. movie. I just made a 5 min. movie for my advanced comm class and it took me over a half hour of footage. Erik |

it's sounds like it's going to be a mini gumball or something like that. interviews with exotic car owners, fast cars racing through the cities, running from cops. it'll sell but i doubt like GGW. but like allan said, it's about quality. you don't want a poor quality video with wreckless driving and stupid comments. any teenager could do the same thing, i should know, a few of my friends did that a couple years ago. i think if you followed the Gumball formula (hot girls, amazing cars, etc.) it could be pretty successful. you just need a gimic that makes you stand out from the rest. i'm thinking you need exotic locations, like hawaii or even down pch. that's one thing the gumball doesn't have much of. |

The most interesting technical challenge I've seen from 'home-made' videos is how to properly mic a car. Mic'ing the interior muffles the engine sound and picks up driver/passenger chatter, while mic'ing the outside of the car picks up wind noise/buffeting....thoughts? |

It is actually a very cool idea. Espcially if done the right way. As Allan says, high quality. If this could be arranged in some way, this could actually work. But someone has to take charge and do something about it. |

Allen, mount the camera on your helmet, then make a high speed run from Top of volcano to southern tip of Island, not stopping for anything or anybody. Run stop signs, red lights, etc...in fact, if someone in the street, gun it! It will sell like hotcakes! (Seen Rendezvous? It was amateur-like. One of the top selling car videos of all time...only 8 min long.) |

Why would it be so hard. I don't understand. Just shoot 8 hours or so of video, Edit it, voice over it. Mabey the first video wouldn't be so great but you would get better and better at it. I have seen videos on the internet that are pretty good just need some voice over etc. Where is all this money going to go? |

I at one time or another have had the thought of putting together a Ferrari buyers guide on DVD, starting with the 308 series... and have wanted to shoot a doc on the Ferrari fanatic... But unless you have sponsors, donors, or a fistfull of yen, it's hard to produce a quality product. I own an uncompressed digital edit suite, quality cameras, crane, do voice narration on a national basis, bla bla bla, and it would still cost me a fortune to produce something killer. |

When this is done correctly, it can be a good idea, but Don't do this on one night sleep. Think about how you are going to get all the cars, what info do you want to show? do you want races or each car individual? Is there somebody here with a good camera, because en normal digicam is usually (pardon me) . When you do something like this, it must be top quality, otherwise it's all like those 1000 other videos on the net. Just my 0.02 |

All we need to do is pass a video camera around. Could sell it on F-chat or thru the internet. MAKE MILLIONS LOL, or just have a lot of fun! What do you think? If you guys decide to I get a copy for free!LOL |
