Hi Mike: The Mondi that you see on ebay MAY be a good value if it needs nothing. That is, if it has service records that indicate it has at least 2-3 years before needing a major service. I am the first to criticize those who say the belts should be changed every 5 years regardless of mileage, but if its been more than 30,000 miles the price is too high.
Someone noted the car is "ugly." That's for you to decide. I think the later design IS nicer, but an 8 "ugly"? That's not the feedback I get.
Pros and Cons of the 8:
Pros:
Low price
Beautiful Pininfarina Design (IMHO)
Seating for 4 (Very tight but, if like me you have kids, it is perfect).
Fantastic Handling
Great Highway Cruiser
Peppy once underway
Plenty of headroom
Relatively spacious for an exotic.
It is Ferrari
Did I mention low price?

Cons:
Could use more power (i.e., slow take off)
Poor image by some F fans (witness posts in this thread)
Metric tires ($220 a piece)
The usual Ferrari reliability problems
For about 5,000 more you can have a QV

Its that last one in the Cons section that is most significant.

I bought an 8 because it was less than 18,000, and seemed a good opportunity. If I never had another Ferrari, Id be happy with the car. However, I DO want more power and I DO like the later design. So, since I dont think my car will depreciate that much, if at all, I will keep it a few years and get a 3.2.
Bottom line:
If your budget will only allow about 15,000- 18,000 for initial purchase, a Mondial 8 is a good choice. Nice car, and dont listen to anyone who says otherwise.

I guess I'm part of the GT4 lovers minority. Of course I think there are much better looking Ferrari's but for some reason I like the GT4 and would like to have one if a good example crossed my path.

Jordan
Any fit Mondial will cruise well north of 100 all day. It's major drawback was a power to weight ratio: They took the same hp hit as the injected 2v cars for emissions control in 1980, but exacerbated by being a bigger car. That said, they were written up in several magazines as having better handling than the 308, and are far more usable on a daily basis.
Mondials are very much GT cars as opposed to the 308 sports cars. An analogy is the 365GTB vs the 365 GTC. There are mods available to make a 2v faster, but the key improvement was the 4v head. The old story is Enzo wanted to give his 12 cylinder customers a car they could drive during the week.

The qvs' added a good amount of power, and the 3.2's added more power yet (as fast or faster than previous 308s) and were the best looking of the series. The main improvement packages I key on with the 3.2s is the rust-proofed bodies and Nikasil cylinder liners (very long service life).

I also think the 308GT4 is undervalued and a terrific car.

Am happy to rabbit on further, but the bottom line is you should drive a couple and see what you like. :-)

best

You should check with Sam Germana (Sjmst) on this board. He recently purchased an 82 Mondial coupe and would probably be a good resource

Is the Mondial 8 performance really that bad? Can they still get up to 100 ok and handle well on some curvy roads? I dont need the fastest Ferrari, just something to have fun in! Besides, anything is faster than my Mustang :-)

Their right, mondials are in no short supply so dont hurry into anything. I have to disagree with the GT4 though. They are great classic F-cars but from a young persons point of view they are not very attractive. A GTS is not much more $$$ than a GT4 and it looks MUCH sharper (IMO). Its all a matter of tast and opinion though so get what you like and not whats a good deal. There is a great deal of styling difference between the Mondial, GT4 and GTS so it should not be a hard decision.

I agree with Dave: the GT4 is finally off the bottom rung and they are being appriciated and bought for higher prices than a few years ago. The Mondial 8 is now the least desireable Ferrari, but at a price would still be loads of cheap fun. A GOOD 8 in the $15k range would be a no brainer. Keep in mind the services are no cheaper than a nicer QV so maybe an extra 5-10k would be better spent for a QV coupe.

There are a mess of Mondy coupes on Traderonline.com.
The Mondial 8's are slugs performance wise and with the ugly ugly bumpers and high maintenance they are unwanted. For about the same money you can get a GT4 which is a much better performer and likely to hold value well. For mid 20's you can buy a Mondial 3.2 coupe and get much better performance, more reliablilty and much better looking as well.

Only knock on the '82 is going to be the 2v with the weight of the mondial equals less than neck-snapping performance. Doesn't appear to be a steal or overly cheap price. But, would need more info to make that call.

Good info, thanks everyone.

This is going to be a BIG investment for me and I simply MUST get the "right" car.

The only 308 I've ever driven was an 84 QV and it felt pretty damned quick. I suspect the early 2V cars will seem pokey compared to it.

'82 is the first year for the mondial...that does not always mean anything, but I look at the first couple years with a close eye. Personally I would take a 308 over a mondial coupe any day. (just my opinion)

Depending on what you want, the 2v are great undervalued Grand Tourers for what they now sell for, but the more power of the 4v versions is very noticable.

Mike
I am in St. Louis and looked at a 308 at this
dealer for another F-chatter.
In my last contact, he was considering a PPI.
If I can help let me know.

Well, thanks for the input guys. It did seem a little low on price, but the Mondial coupes from what I have seen command a lower price than a 308.

Hey, it didn't hurt to ask and while I am shopping, there is NO rush at all. I need to find the best car I can and if that takes a while...then good!

Thanks again,

Mike

19k is more than full price for these cars which have the least powerful engine in the series. for low 20s you should be able to get a qv. the car seems to have some front bumper damage from the photos but I could be wrong. 46k milage. anyone who says there is investment potential in this car should get off the crack pipe. In fact I will sell an option to anyone for $100 allowing you to buy this mondial 8 for 20k 15 years from now. if its then current value is greater than 20k, I give you the difference, if not you just loose your 100 bucks. :-)

First red flag...it seems cheap...but IIRC if you do a search here on this dealer you may find some comments worthy of note.

Does anyone have any feedback about this particular dealer? The Buy Now price seems reasonable...but ya never know.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2440068411&category=6212&rd=1

Any feedback would be appreciated, expecially regarding the 1982 models. Are the 82's considered a "good year" or a "bad year" for the Mondy???

Thanks in advance,

Mike - shopping around :-)
