I read with interest everyone's comments on clutch replacement. Having just done it to my 81 BB, I can save anyone that is interested a lot of cash. I had the clutch rebuilt in a local Detroit shop, using twin kevlar disks for $550. The pressure plate and spacer were resurfaced for that price also. Balancing was minimal.Take up is very smooth and positive. The restorer didn't get the shim pack correct and we corrected it without removing the engine.

Charles: Mazal Tov on your new car !!! Please keep posting your views on the enthusiasts Ferrari.

All these Boxer owners recommend to run (not walk)
towards the nearest airport to scope out the Hot
Sexy Italian that sits 44" on the West Coast.

I am working on it. Boxer owners it appears have uncommon loyalty towards the car. I have an auto book that talks about how Boxer owners feel there cars are the best in the world !!!
I am not kidding around. It was published in
England. We all know the Brits have the best
auto publications. The English monthly auto magazines
weigh the most !!! They also contain hot babes and funny stories.

I hope to have appointments lined up the next week or two. PPI (including compression test, and leak down), and test drive etc....

I am new to the Ferrari/Boxer world. I just got mine and it is sweet. People told I have been driving it for the last few days and there is no amount of $ really that I would sell it for. Why? because it has the feel of a great car. You know how that is when you own the car for a little while and drive it , and feel that it is meant to be yours for a really long time. I know I sound like i am ranting but that is how I feel. Right now I wouldnt trade it for any Enzo. Yeah it may need to have an engine out in two or three years or whatever but I dont care. It runs like a right now it thrills me and I am lovin it. If you can find a BBi or any other F car like this that rocks your world whether it is 65,75 or 85K won't matter. Just get on your horse and ride. You only go around once.

As a matter of fact, just before the crash, I was offered 275 K for mine. I turned it down. Most of it was cash. hmmmmmm....must have really loved the car

When I was looking for my BB512i I looked at or drove 8 as I recall. There are a lot of thrash cars out there with bogus claims of low miles and DOT/EPA legal . Check, recheck and check again. By the way, you guys are paying way too much for service and maintenance. I paid less than $2500 for a new clutch and less than $7k for a major service from a dealer. You have to negotiate and be willing to walk and show it to get a dealer to come down on their prices.

in the late 1980s I doubt you saw this car for 85k, unless it was right after the crash of market prices - these things went for over 200k back then.

I guess those cars hold there value pretty well.
I saw one at a dealer 15 years ago. It was a 1984
boxer that was red-tan. I think it had 6,000 miles on it. There were asking 85k at that time.
I suppose if someone can afford to maintain the car they can drive it pratically for free.

I dont think ive every heard of one for 55K, that would be a real bargan! From my experience the 70ish cars are hard to come by as well. Most of the 512 BBi's that ive seen are in the 80s range or higher.

The cars are for the most part priced from 55K - 95K. This is exactly what has been reported in recent price guides. The average price for a very nice car is generally around 75K.

55K is for a driver. 95K is for cars that have lo-miles (they all do) and spend most of their time on the grass. Certainly CAL compliant cars are worth more.

Michael the car listed with Forza has been there a long time.

I have always liked the Boxers. I am interested
in this car, due to the attention and maintainance
given by the owner/collector. I know that he takes
care of his vehicles. He has records of maintainance
that has been performed over the years. I will pursue
something completely different; if the car being offered is not for me.

http://www.ferrariads.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&db_id=494&query=retrieval

I'm sure that Ralph has already seen this one for $72.5K asking on FerrariAds.com.

Just a note regarding your comment that the vendor is the original owner. I'd have to say that this is definitely worth something of value, but I can't assign a dollar figure to it in my mind.

Martin....what do you think about this aspect of it ?

There is also a 1980 512BB for sale here in Calgary for $85,000 Canadian.

The rant that $70k is a 'great' price for a BBi is alittle off...this one's been at Forza Motorsports for months now, and nobody's jumping all over it:

http://www.forza.weblobby.com/photos2.htm

And the price? $62K...hmmm....

I can get a 1981 512BBi with 700 original garage queen miles for $ 95,000.
Who needs one?

Also have a 19,000 Miles excellent car with luggage that can be had for about $80-85K.

Ralph: FYI I bought a 1983 BBi last summer for $75K....ALL red, with tan interior. It was PERFECT. It had 18,000 miles......but who knows for sure.

The major was done a year before, with a LOT of extra things done......to the tune of $47K.

While BBi prices "seem" to be going up, I really doubt that they are over the $75K that I paid form mine.

I feel that I got a "fair" deal.

Edward: I do not know if the car has the BAR
sticker. I think the owner registers his cars
with a CAL temporary registration.

I will be happy to give the # and name of the
agent who is listing the BBi for the owner; if
I decide to pass on the vehicle. I should be
able to come to a final decision within a month.

Dr. Ibrahim the car is being sold privately.
It is not advertised anywhere. I saw the BBi
when I purchased my first exotic in April 03.
I did not pay much attention to the car.
It looked to be in excellent shape. The major
service done three years ago was for 11K.
Thank you for all the positive comments.

You are all suggesting I run to the airport and
purchase the car ! I will work on this.
Please call me when you all want to play poker.

Dale I saved the best for last: Conning a ride ?
Does this work both ways ? The problem I
have; is that I am on the GT-3 list for an April
04 build date. I cannot have both toys. The more
important problem is that I really wanted something
to keep up with Grady (or blow his doors off) that
has more than two wheels.

Pictures please.

Clutch is around 3500 to replace. They all need a new clutch sooner or later. 70 is a great price. I would not sell mine for that. And I don't have a major done on it yet. If it is an original car, I would jump and buy it for 70.

tan dash...hmmm...sounds like an 84! probably not an amerispec federalization but other shops have done quality work. by all means , do a leak down as that is the real way to find info of the internals. do note however that the boxer 12 is very robust and i really doubt there will be any trouble internally. will probably need full engine out. a real cal legal bbi w/ full service and turn key is probably worth 80-85k.

also ...i would not sell mine either! the car just sucks you in and there is no turning back!! i really mean that. mine is just finishing a $17k service and while i hate to spend that kind of money...i will in the end have no regrets. it is that good a car!!! another note, seems nobody on this thread will sell theirs either. they are in the same class as the daytona as far as sex appeal but more modern but not so much so that the edge is gone!! buy it before the guy changes his mind.

I forgot an important point. The seller "is"
the original owner. I purchased my car from
him in April 03. Car was purchased in Belgium
in 1983.

I would have a thorough PPI including a compression and leakdown test . You also need to contact Richard Merritt at the DOT to confirm that any DOT/EPA paperwork with the car is in fact legit as there are a lot of forgeries out there. I also suggest that you verify the car's mileage with Gerald Roush at the Ferrari Market Letter as it is common to find Boxers that have less and less mileage as the years go by. While I believe the market value on a BB512i is from $65k to $85k, I would not sell mine for that amount at this time. By the way, my BB512i is also a Belgium spec car sold by Francorchamps in June 1982. FYI, it should have the hex wheel nuts rather than the earred ones if it is Belgium spec.

Ralph....

My "guess" is about $70K "as is" without knowing the PPI results.

I would have a leak down test done.

Greetings:

I have toyed with a 512 BBi before.
Please give me your opinion on the
price of this vehicle.

1983 512 BBi - Car has the following.
Major done three years ago from a very
well known independent shop.
Clutch is beginning to slip.
Records, records, and more records.
Tool Kit
Books, w/pouch, original sales brochure.
10,000 miles. They all have this !!!
I saw the car it looks like 10K miles.
If we agree on a price the car will have
a professional P.P.I. from someone who
"knows" Boxers in the Bay Area.
Tan dash.
Original tires
Original Pioneer
Collector has 14 similar cars.
Original paint
has two exhausts.

Should a compression test be done
during the P.P.I., ???

Please comment on the price of this
vehicle. No promises on purchase though !!
Thanks
