To the cars you were asking about, as my family sedan (to replace my M3 once my son gets too big for that backseat) I am considering the M5 and the Quatraporte. As soon as the Quatraporte is available for driving, I plan to go test drive the two side-by-side. |

Yes ofcourse Brian you are right. I'm doing another night shift and I think one side of my brain (or both ) might actually have been asleep when I posted this. I ofcourse only need a car for the family that works on nice simple tar roads ... but others have a different criteria. I'll go back to sleep, er, work ... and yes I agree that a few Subaru models seem to cover many owners needs than others ... and they are not expensive! Pete |

There's no such thing "as best new car"... only "best new car for a particular purpose". If you live in the mountains of Colorado, that Cayenne will make a far better only-car than the M5. But since getting stranded is soo much more of a nightmare there, a Toyota 4Runner might make more sense. But then Subaru makes great 4WD cars that are very practical and efficient. OTOH, if we are talking about a car to drive to the track, those are all losers compared to... Well, I think you get the idea. You have to specify the goodness criteria in order to have any reasonable discussion on "best". |

Is there a Ferrari that can be considered the very best new car currently on the market? The new 460 2+2 could come close as it would score higher than the 360 in the practicality area. If the new Maserati Quattroporto was not so ugly (this is just my opinion) then it would be a consideration ... as long as they are reliable. I think the BMW M5 saloon would have my vote. 4 seater, 4 door, fast and assume the usual BMW dynamics thus fun to drive and composed. German reliability and good looks (yep even the new 5 series is nice looking ... a major improvement over the 7 series IMO). Thus what do you think would be the current best car produced? I do not think that it the 4x4 vehicles like the Porsche Caynne would win due to the fact that they are so inefficient and thus waste our resources every time a wheel turns ... after all driving all 4 wheels is less efficient than just 2 and they probably never actually need all 4 wheels powered ... but that is just my views.
