Chris,

I love your attitude and the message about first owning your 308. I, too, must admit I'm a bit nervous about my first drive with a group of newer Ferrari's. I think I'm alot like you were with your 308; here I am finally privileged enough to own a Ferrari as a means of recreational fulfillment but your attitude gives me some comfort in knowing that I won't be looked down upon.

Still, it's seems to me that's it a shame that you've been forced to defend yourself as if you're held to some higher standard. Wonderful car. Thanks, Dane (the less insignificant 77 GTB owner!)

I'm amazed you got that many miles out of a set of tires. Remember, I've seen you drive.

Remember the CLK???

Ron, when I got my 308, I literally stayed up all night the first nite it came home, I stayed in the garage with my "baby" I could not believe I owned a Ferrari!

During the spring of 1996, when Dana and I drove down to Texas World Speedway, I was shocked that we had just about the only 308 there.

Lot's of 348's and 355's, it was a little intimidating.

I have to admit at that moment, I felt pretty insignificant. This was the very first time I and my 308 had been with any other Ferrari's.

We did not know any Ferrari owners at that point and we were not sure what to expect.

Although our 1977 308 GTB was a one owner, 19,000 mile fly yellow beauty, I was worried the "snobs" would look down on my dream car.

To our relief, just about everybody we met, was very nice. One of the nicest was Paul Frame, who was racing his 355 challenge car. Paul also had his Fly yellow F50 and his F40 there. Paul did not care what we drove, a 308 or a F50. He was a gentlemen, I appreciated that. I have never forgotten how nice it was to be treated with respect, therefore, I have tried to emulate that respect to everyone and anyone who has a passion for Ferrari.

I learned that weekend that the type of Ferrari you own means nothing, it is the passion that earns you respect. Chris

INSIGNIFICANT 308 owner!!! I wish I had a 308 now.
The way I see it, we all are here due to one commmon interest. While driving these cars on the road, when you come across someone else in their F-car you either pull over and talk like you knew each other for years or you definitly give the "what's up bro" wave. In a weird way this car makes us all best friends even though we don't all know one another..

Am I the only one that feels this way?????

Ron, yes the same guy.

I must admit I do not know him well.... this is kinda of a joke between my wife and I but it brings up a good point.

When Dana and I got our 308 in January of 1996, we lived in Tulsa. Well, no Ferrari club, so we would DRIVE (450+ miles, each way)the 308 down to College Station to the Challenge races. That is when I first met Paul.

He was always very nice to me (an insignificant 308 owner, I thought, but he did not seem to care)

Since that time, I ocassionally see him at Cavallino. He always says Hi.

Paul made a big impression on me, that no matter how many Ferrari's you have or how much money you have, everybody is equal if you love Ferrari's.

When my wife and I were in Maranello at one of the shops, Paul's racing picture was in there and I told the lady Paul was a friend of mine... my wife corrected me, Paul is somebody I have met and I respect, but not my "friend" yet!

I know he raced again this year... I looked for him at Indy, I had a pitpass and was in with Ferrari of Houston, but I did not see him... Chris

Cmparrf40 - Are you refering to the same Paul Frame who was the fisrt person in the U.S. to take delivery of a F50 in Texas..
If so, where has he been? I know he races the Ferrari Challenge but haven't seen him around.

I'll deliver whatever you want me to in order to drive the F40 on slicks. I'll be back in NJ tomorrow to bring half my stuff home. Then done with finals on Tuesday and fourth months off. I think these HREs will be good, they have a bit of the Ferrari pimp look to them, but they're light as hell.

Bret, like I said, not my favorites, but they are round, so that fits my bill (pun intended) right now. Speedlines or LM's later. Hey these are in New Jersey, you are in New Jersey - why don't you pick them up and deliver them to LA, that way you can drive the F40 with slicks on!

Steve that is my F40.

I like both sets of wheels, but the black are MEAN looking, kinda like that....

I wanted LM wheels, but they are $9,200 a set. way too much for me.

Speedline is what most Ferrari's run. They are $6,400 a set. I could have gotten a set for $3,900 last winter but I procrastinated and they sold. Unfortunatly they are special order only, 3 - 6 weeks, and FCA/LA is only a couple of weeks away.

I ended up with a set of HRE's just because they were available.

I did not buy them for beauty, hope they can handle slicks and a very heavy foot!

I don't know. The red w/ black wheels compliments the F40 very well! The black get my vote, and you don't have to worry about cleaning brake dust, you won't be able to tell. But, wow, how I'd love a ride in an F40!

Try these rims on for size:

Red F40
Yellow F40

IMO - I like the rims on the Yellow F40 the best.

The absolute meanest/best looking wheels on an F40 are those black speedlines (also found on the F50GT1 I think). You can't beat a vicious red car like that with the black wheels. On a 308 or so it would look stupid, on the F40 it just looks great though. Just my $.02 to try and pressure Chris into getting them.

Do yourself a big favor, buy a second set of wheels for that bad ride. Mount something fairly hard in compound on the stock set for tooling around the streets...

Mount yourself some real track rubber for use on the track or when "misbehaving". The very best street tire available SUCKS when compared to even a moderate track tire.

Try the Michelin Pilots. They wear better than the P Zeros and grip very well. I still have the stock 335/35/17's on the rear of my 97 GTS though they are now getting pretty hard. Still have a bit of tread left. I have a new set in the garage waiting...
What size wheels does the F-40 have? I think the 335's are a little small for my 13" rims but I have not been able to find any thing wider. 345 or 355's would probably fit better.

Tim,
The F40 featured Weber-Marelli electronic injection, per Ferrari's website details.

Chris,
335/35/17 PZero's are ~ $309/each, and Michelin Pilot Sports are $329/each through Tirerack.com

You are probably tired of Tim and I talking about our F40's ,but here is an example of being bad in a F40!

My F40 had new P Zero's when I picked it up in October. We had a car show today, so I raised the engine cover and my tires are almost smooth! In fact, the left side tire is down to the cord!

Now you know what I meant when I said wheelspin was a problem!

I wonder how much 335/17 P zero's are going cost?

Hey it was worth it, I have a friend Paul Frame that has a yellow F50. It was rumored he could go threw a set of tires after one session on the track, now I believe it!

Oh I love my F40!
