Michael welcome to the site. I would suggest you try to look at later models for both the cars you have mentioned. The 348 post 1993 as most of the gremlins had been sorted out and the 512TR if your budget allows.

Since you like the side "cheese grate" look, as do many people, the visual appeal of both is similar although the TR's are more accentuated. However, the 348 is said to be less expensive to maintain than the Testarossa.

The 512tr handle much better than its predecessor (testarossa) and is a faster more sorted out car. If you are planning on track use, you might prefer the extra power of the Testarossa but 0-60 times for both cars is very similar.

But none of these would touch a 996 Twin-turbo for performance.

I second Michael N's comments.

IMHO the TR is a great buy right now. But, you should buy the one you love. It really is an emotional issue. People try and justify not buying a specific model because they heard some guy say that the whatever joint guide might fail if left in the rain for 20 years.

I've seen people really struggle trying to make the "perfect" buying decision concerning a Ferrari, like it is some sort of competition to try and find the perfect choice. Know what, they're all special. Buy whichever one makes your heart go pitter patter.

Michael, I did not notice in the heading that you were looking at the Tr and 348. Forget my last front engine comment. Given a choice, I will go for brute strength -- the TR. yes , I have one and I like the rudimentary nature of it. The 348 is a much more "electric" car, new series type of car. If you are going to be doing some work yourself -- the TR is easier from a straight mechanical sense. As a track car the 348 is more nimble but not as fast on the straights. I see them get picked down on the straights by the 12 cylinders. all depends what you want on the track. as far as expense wise i do not know the average costs of each to maintain. The TR can get expensive, but so can any other Ferrari. As far a torque and speed, hands down the TR -- nothing like doing 100 in 3rd gear just by wishing it to happen.

Michael, You need to decide three things. What do you want the car for, how you plan to use and really those two don't matter if the car you absolutely love doesn't meet the first two categaories. And I recommend you buy the car you love not the most practical for you science wise. Practicality wears off and you will wish for the one you love. That said, all ferraris in my book can be daily divers just have to keep up on the maintenance -- not to sure if they can touch the porsche in the daily reliability category. Do you want a mid-engine or front engine car? A modern or older series car? Do you want it to double as track car as well? There are a few questions for you to ponder. Obviously , all these must be answered under the premise of how much you want to spend.

What's up Michael! see that you're new here like I was. Ferrari is a whole new experience in cars like nothing else out there, although not the fastest which to me is the least importance in a car. Looks, feel, handling, sound, sitting inside of one driving down the highway and you'll see what I'm trying to say. As far as maintenance costs, you'll forget about it once you're behind the wheel and as far as reliability, I've never been stranded nor have any major problems. I drive the car very hard almost abusive through turns but not abusing the car in any way to destroy it. You can buy a Ferrari at price close to most peoples reality and experience the reality of owning one. I have owned many cars from Porsches, BMW's, Mercedes and so on and still I love the Ferrari more than any car I can imagine. If you never owned one, you should just for the experience and find out for yourself. You could get several different opinions but may not match yours so go ahead and just get one before life's over with....

I am a long time Porsche owner "8 cars in 12 years" but I am considering a conversion to 1 of the ferraris mentioned above. Looking for input concerning reliability and maintance costs. Tales of your ferrari experiences will be greatly appreciated. Trying to choose between a ferrari and a new twin turbo, with the ferrari being the more budget friendly choice. Once again I have no experience with ferraris so I need help with this decision.
