For some of them the car is quiet because he car was too loud at 94db, so the cut out had to be closed.

Hey rob, i wasnt that far off the experienced guys. The course was definately not suited for a 3700lb 340hp camaro though. I walked to course twice, but should have done it a 3rd time as i went through a crossover twice on my first run. The part about going slower to go faster is so true. I went slow in and fast out, which i think is better than fast in slow out. There was one long sweeper that went in a complete circle, that part i had to go fast into and lift off to slightly rotate the car. I went in too fast once and spun it though, but it was during a fun run so i didnt care. My goal was to do a 42 second run, my best was a 39.6 so i was happy. |

Be careful, it gets really addictive. Two years ago I autocrossed for the first time, now I've invested $2,500 in my BMW (and it still runs in stock class!) and let's not even talk about how much club racing has cost me. You autocross for a year or so and then you want to club race. AX rocks and is more technical, but blowing an entire day for six 45 second runs gets old. You improve quite a bit when you're first learning. After about 4-6 AX days you'll be within a second of the experienced AX'ers, but then it takes years to get those last tenths off. Rob's quick autocross 101 advice... 1) Have to go slower to go faster! Go fast in the fast sections and slow in the slow sections. Trying to go fast in the slow sections will add the most to your time. Be patient. 2) Hit your apexes. I've heard that in a 45 second run, missing the apex of just one cone by a couple feet makes a several tenth difference. 3) Generally speaking it's best to late apex. 4) Always look at where you're going, not where you are. On a corner you're looking at where you'll be coming out. 5) Most the time you are either 100% on the brakes or 100% on the gas. Some long sweepers and salmons it's better to just modulate and be smooth. Not very often though. 6) The top things that will improve your time in class are... #1 The Driver #2 Slicks #3 Racing harness to keep you planted in the seat #4 Shocks/Springs. 7) Run on a low tank of gas, remove the spare and jack, hand sweep your tires of gravel between runs, cool off the engine by turning the heat on and popping the hood, and check those nuts. 8) One of the most important parts is walking the course. Walk the line you will use and I even squat and sway as I walk to get a little of the sensation I will be feeling on the run. After you do 4-6 AX days, I highly recommend the Evolution AX School, they do them all over the country. Not only do you have national champion instructors, but you get to do about 50-60 runs and they time your sections. You learn more from one day of that than anything. For a list of local autocross clubs in your area go to www.autocross.com. |

PCA usually runs out of the Meadowlands here, I think a little on Long Island too. The Porsche guy today said the same exact thing Terry is saying. They're also a lot safer at the Pcar events too, a lot more run off, organized and all. That s2000 came a little to close to hitting the plow truck, that was parked at the edge of the lot,for comfort IMO. At Pcar events you are obligated to work the course when not driving (the only downside if you could call that one). He said that all makes are welcome at their autocrosses. Wow, could this mean Bret stops hating Pcars? I'm afraid it looks that way... |

Try to hook up with the local Porsche Club chapter and do a PCA autocross. I have run SCCA and PCA events for years, the PCA around here always builds a faster and more open track. The SCCA builds them very technical. SCCA may be harder to get a top time.... but for a P-car or F-car the faster track setups are more fun. Ive run some PCA events where fast cars do well over 100 mph. Having the massive parking lot at Atlanta Motor Speedway is great! PCA in Atlanta welcomes everyone, you can run whatever kind of car you want. The early lightweight 911's are by far the fastest P-cars, along with some 914's that are really trick. In Atlanta there is usually a great race for FTD between a really tricked out 993TT and a '73 911RS replica that weighs under 1900lb. The RS usually wins but its close! |

I was there from like 11 to 1 today, I saw you guys. I was talking to the guy with the Carrera and the guy with the Vette for quite awhile. The course wasn't really set up for a real sports car, it was much more in tune with those hopped up Civics and the likes, very short wheelbase cars. The Vette and Porsche just didn't have any room to run, neither could get out of first gear, a little too tight for them to show their stuff. It was a cool though. Once the Fcar goes together these type of things will be in order. |

Man what fun it was. It was the one at the pallisades sanctioned by the westchester sports car club. I drove my friends 99 camaro SS in the E street prepared novice class, running street tires. Prepared means that it is no longer stock, but not modded enough to be in the street modified class. Anyway, it has different rear tires and it was tailhappy all day, i even spun it in a fun run after the event. My best run that counted was 40.058 (?) or somewhere around there. It was enough to give me second in the prepared novice class. My friend in a 98 integra GSR with a header, intake and falken tires (really sticky) got first, but not by much. It was just my luck that in a fun run i managed a 39.6??. That would have given me 1st, but im content with 2nd on my first time out. I'll send the vids to ben so you can see them if you want. Just a side note, a 996 carrera ran a 39.?, its mostly driving skill. A honda CRX (or maybe a civic hatchback) posted the fastest time of the day too, u'd be suprised at how fast they are with suspension and tires and a real driver. They were 3 wheeling it arouunf corners, it was so much fun. Apparently theres a niose limit, at 94db the camaro was well over that, but the cut out was capped and it was stock sounding again. I highly recomend that some of you guys try out autocrossing, the next one at that site is July 7th. Pleasantville, NY represented well taking 1-2 in the novice street prepared (modded) class. Im gonna be mad when im no longer a novice (1 or 2 more events) but my times werent that far off other good ESP-T cars. |
