Dane:

Great idea. If you're handy enough the 308 should be easy to keep running. The technology is simple and the car is well built. Keep us posted with your results.

Congatulations Terry on your car! I'm honeing my repair skills on my Europa before I take the plunge on a Ferrari. I agree that the fact a 308 has very little downside on depriciation, so if you do your own maintainence you can own one for *almost* nothing, save the price of parts. I'll be needing new valve guides soon for my Lotus and that will be the acid test for my learning curve.

Edward it looks like Terry meant that in jest. The punctuation is a smiley face made on the computer keyboard but he didnt hit the colon key. I think Terry knows what hes getting into. Your right though, some maint bills on these rides are the price of very very good used vehicles. The things we do for love I guess :-)

I can't stop laughing about that "Well engineered car requiring little maintenance" statement. How long have you been reading this site? If anyone wants "Well engineered and Maintenance free" you better get a Toyota. That is not in Ferrari's vocabulary. Geez just look at some of the sceduled maintenance bills some of these guys pay. I can buy great whole cars for the price of a 30,000 on a TR. Let's be positive but don't leave reality doing so.

Great idea, Dane. Let people be positive about whichever Ferrari they own or hope to own. Tired of listening to people having to defend themselves.

Dane,
I cashed in 6 months worth of aluminum cans the other day. Got back 4.80. Old habits die hard. 308's are just what they are supposed to be---lots of fun.

Good for anyone who finances or pays cash. Its your business and any comment otherwise from a party that is not directly involved is out of line. You own it, drive it and who are we to say how you went about getting it, cash or otherwise. Enjoy your new cars and enjoy the ride!!

How to fuel your passion? FINANCE BABY! Thats right, Im not ashamed to say my new 308 comes with a payment! I could have done the accepted thing and leased a new Audi or BMW, but I had a BMW 328Is last year for awhile and sold it because it was boring. It was fast and handled great, but you could barely hear the engine.

I am keeping my 140K mile '89 Isuzu Trooper to drive in horrid weather and when I need to haul stuff or park in the city at night. Errrrrr or when I am fixing the 308 (though I am sure such a well engineered car will require very little maintenance ;). The Trooper runs and drives great, only maintenance is oil costs. Although I did buy and use a can of radiator stop leak 2 years ago...

I will fix the 308 myself and drive it most of the time. When I get my 911 back together, hopefully later this summer, I will drive it as well. The 911 probably less than the 308 as it will be far less civil, more of a track weapon than transportation.

Anyhow... maintenace costs instead of depreciation. It will be interesting to see if a 308GTB can be driven at a similar cost per mile to a new vehicle given self maintenance. One thing for sure... insurance and tags will be TONS cheaper!

Hi folks,

As a result of the marathon thread addressing the alleged smugness of the few (I stress "alleged"), I thought I'd try a new trend saying what I did so I could pay for my "new" 308GTB, it's temporary storage with Shurgard and the delivery fees.

My wife are split geographically, courtesy of the US Army, and we're paying rent at two locations, VA and HI. So, I've had to buck up a bit financially. Today, I rediscovered my bachelor ways when I bought ten boxes of cereal, six boxes of macaroni, two cartons of milk, and some powdered juice! However, I still bought our dog the good stuff, Eukenuba(sp?) and made sure my automatic investments were withdrawn. To be honest, I was laughing to myself in the commissary (mil. grocery store). Here I am, the "new" Ferrari owner and I'm excited to see discount cereal!

I'm still happy to have the 308.
