I dont know about where Ferrari sourced its steel during the late '70s or early '80s, but Alfa Romeo did source its steel from the USSR during much of this period and earlier... and the cars are notorious for rusting. I have heard folks talk about part of the problem having to do with the quality of the steel, but then again im not a metallurgist. |

I don't know, but steel rusts regardless of where it comes from. If memory serves me it was 83 that they started coating the frames to prevent rusting. I have to admit it has worked on my car so far. I would just keep up with any rust, coat any prone areas if possible, etc. I have the feeling if these frames rust they're gonna fall apart from the inside out. When I drilled holes for mounting my fans I got a couple drips out of the frame there. It must be from condensation when building. I would sand out any rust you have and weld in pieces if necessary (if it's that bad) or if it's just surface rust paint the frame after sanding it off. |

I was told by a guy at the Reading show that the rusting problem on my 82 Mondial is because they used Russian steel back then and there wasn't enough nickle in it so it rusts prematurely. Anybody out there who can confirm this? If so, what's the solution? |
