What happens when you are parked, engine turned off, waiting for your wife/girlfriend to finish shopping, wouldnt you need a nice system to listen to.

A radio would definately help for the long trips, but the best sound system you can install in your car is a tubi. |

bill stelle a soundsystem would normally be used for longer trips when even the best thing ( a ferrari engine sound) can get tiresome after awhile..plus music helps the time go by faster IMO |

Go for it. My 8 yr. old was riding with me in the 308 and I turned on some tunes. He said, "Wow, This is like playing "Need for Speed!". He was right. The sound of the engine and just enough music make for a Concerto in F-major! |

I would suggest installing a stereo system only if you are completely sick and tired of the annoying sound of the engine, and cannot stand to talk to your self any longer. However before installing said system, perhaps you should comtemplate getting a louder car. Older 12 Cylinder cars usually work for me. And if possible get a Spyder, as that can add to the noise level. The best place for a stereo system I think, is in the home, or in my case the garage! |

I have a Nakamichi CD player in my 82 308GTSi and very good speakers in the doors. Mine has cardboard with holes in it as speaker covers. That hurts the sound quality, but I haven't had time to change it. The sound of the engine doesn't over ride the stereo. I think it's a good idea because sometimes you want to listen to some music with engine sounds |

Bret's right. You cant always rev the car out to redline. Thats where the radio comes in. Also, on the highway do you really leave it in third to keep the revs at ~6000 (or wherever it might be at hwy speed) |

Actually martin, the speakers are in the back. In a 550 you will have surround. |

Bret, you read my mind! My Europa is very loud when driving so my radio needs to be cranked and even then it sounds bad so I rarely use it. But in stop and go or at long lights I turn it on. I'd agree a top end system is pointless but a middle system is not a waste of money. Plus, with Lucas electrics, temprature goes down 10 degrees C when I crank the tunes! I'm thinking if I double the wattage I can cool the car an additional 10 degrees?? ;>) |

Everybody that says radios are no good in Ferraris needs to sit in NYC traffic or NYC suburb traffic. I need something to my mind off of the car which is overheating standing there on a 100degree day... Plus when you drive like 10-15K miles a year in a car sometimes you just want to put on the radio. I think it is definitely worth it to upgrade. A PO put a Sony in dash CD player in my car, not the best radio obviously, but good enough for me. I don't need anything exotic, but at least some decent speakers and a CD player is in order. |

I feel that installing a better and up to date sound system is just as good as installing a tubi exhaust.. You are not changing the appearence of the car, just improving the sound. If you appreciate good music, Get that system you've been waiting for... |

I have a 4 channel Alpine amp behind the metal plate down in the passenger footwell. I used to have the "brain" to a rather large mounted cell phone under there with it so there is a bit of room if you need it. This is just an option if you don't want to mount it behind the seats or run wires back to the trunk. By the way, be careful mounting the amp behind the seats. I know of a guy who drilled thru into the fuel tanks when he was installing his. You just have to pay attention to what you are doing. |

Supposedly I have a high quality AM/FM/10 disk CD with a big amp,... in my F355. Haven't turned it on in the 7,000 miles I have driven the car. I will probably remove it--excess weight!?! |

I have to disagree with you Ross, I can tell the difference between a hi grade and a not so hi grade system. But then that may be just my ears... A lot of people really can't tell the difference. Ken, most all in one units don't have enough Clean power to get louder than your Ferrari and still sound good. A nice head unit is a must, but I have found that you also need a nice clean amp to drive the speakers. And speaking of speakers, you can replace the in-door units with a nice speaker and remove the leather cover and replace the grills and get a remarkably better sound... You can mount the amp in the trunk, up front if you go without a spare, or like Greg and myself, mount the amp behind the passenger seat. I didn't go all out with my car stereo, like you I didn't want woofers and crap all over the car so I installed a Mcintosh head unit, an Alpine amp. and Polk Audio speakers. A long way from an all out system, and still loud and clean enough to be heard over the 3 liter boom box behind my head... |

i would not recommend installing an expensive system in most ferraris in general. the engine noise is actually quite loud, especially if you have a gts (on or off), which makes it hard to hear the subtle differences of a high priced stereo vs avg px. add to that the confines of space also make installation of speakers awkward and hence the sound can't be directed as efficiently as in a big sedan, you again can't make out the difference between hi grade and avg. |

Ken, my F-car (308QV) is installed with a nice CD head unit, a reasonable amp mounted behind the seats, and then two small speakers mounted on brackets behind the headrests on the small ledge behind the seats. When the stereo is on (very rarely), the sound is balanced and seems to come from out of no-where...especially with the top off. Usually, my engine is my stereo. |

I would like to buy a nice Nakamichi CD-45Z head unit for my 308 QV. My one concern is that I will be wasting my money between the loud sound of the engine and the speakers with their thick leather covers. Has anyone installed a nice sounding sound system in there 308 without going crazy with amps and woofers. I would like to install just the head unit and two new speakers. I have no intentions of making my Ferrari a boom machine. TIA |
