Anyone else think that ebay ad is just a little sketchy? No real info on the car, no seller feedback, and he claims it has an auto transmission. I think whoever bidded is about to get ripped off...

Kevin,

Fantastic car, you're a lucky man. So you CAN take the hardtop on and off by yourself? Once again amazing car!

hi tim. ;)

the hard top comes with all the f50's. they alsoi have a softtop (which is really a joke). I had just put the hardtop on my car a few months ago. and let me tell you: it is *loud* in there. after 30 mins of driving around, my ears were ringing.

the car was originally meant to be driven with the top off. they came from the factory without the top on, unless you asked for it to be on.

gosh, thats a nice sparkle on the hood there.

the f50s were originally sold only on lease, but they did have nice looking windows stickers. the lease was 2 year term and you werent supposed to be able to sell the car during the lease period.

the f50 also comes with some swell luggage that basically has the same form and texture as the seats in the car do. ha?

I think initial orders were limited to one car per customer. The cars were leased to the customers then they buy it at the end of the lease period.

As far as I know, the hardtops came with all the cars. Whether it's installed on the car or in the box at delivery time, it's another matter.

We need a F50 owner to verify these matters.

I don't know how true this is, but one guy ordered two F50's..
You got it, one with the top on and one with the top off. Now that is what I call buying power..

Great. So then, you either have to leave it at the dealership or have your entourage follow in a pick up truck to retrieve the top.

I knew there was a good reason why I didn't buy one. (-:

As far as I know all the 349 F50s produced were barchettas, with a removable hardtop.
As Tenney says, the only fixed roof F50s were the GT racing models.

BTW: Ernesto, is your 360 still de-catted or did you re-install them?

When they first came out... I read that taking the roof off was a dealer job. Always thought that was funny that you would have to take it in to the dealer to add or remove top. But I guess it makes sences if its a race car... not really a street car like we are use to.

Tim, the one you saw was definitely a barchetta, that you can remove the detachable top. What we are saying is that there may be some berlinetta models where the top is not removable (it is fixed). From what I read at the FNA site I think there are two models, but we have no confirmation...

Im 99.99% positive that they are changeable. On the one i saw you could see where the roll bar had some scratches from changing tops. The older FNA site had a picture of it in barchetta configuration with the top suspended above it.

I know the reason for having the hardtop on. It was a period of beautiful weather in stockholm at the present time. So he definitely didnt have to have it on. But i recognised that his path were leading to one of swedens most well known ferrari mechanics. Ofcourse, one wants to keep the hardtop on if you dont know who will have permission to the area that the car is stored.

I will post some nice pictures of three of the finest 365 bb that we have in sweden. But thats coming up later this week.

Cheers /Kristoffer

As per FNA "there needed to be a balance between aerodynamic loads in the dual configuration (Berlinetta and Barchetta) because of the high performance." - this leads me to think it is a convertible.
But the quote you had Ernesto is right off of FNA and leads me to think that some are 100% hardtop like you said. Interesting.

I just found this info on www.f50.com:

"The F50 shell is built entirely of composite material with carbon fibre, Kev lar by Cytec Aerospace and Nomex honeycomb. A choice of a Berlinetta or Barchetta configuration is available. On the Berlinetta version, the hard top complements the structural elements of the car. While the Barchetta version incorporates the anchorage points for two anti-roll bars. The engine is covered by transparent body work which contains aerodynamic air vents. "

So, I assume this means that there are hardtop versions as well as open top versions that come with a removable hard top. I know this is not an official site, but I could not find any info anywhere else...

Bret is right. The hard top is removeable. When its off, another peice thats sort of like a fairing goes in. Any F50 can be either a berlinetta or a barchetta.

Alright, I might be way off base here then. I thought it's just like a hardtop for any other convertible. Here's a pic of with and without, you can see where it attaches. From what I understand that horizontal line behind/below the roll bars is a piece that comes out when the hardtop is put on. You can see that line in the hardtop ones also. Where are the F50 owners when you need them? There are two on here...

I thought there were some F50s that are 100% hardtop, ie you cannot remove the roof. Maybe I am mistaken?

They're all convertibles/targa top, but they have a hardtop (convertible top) which covers the roll bars and goes back a little bit towards the engine when put on. It has to be stored at home because it is a big piece, so many never put them on because they only drive the car in good weather. There is also a black cloth top that can be carried with the car I assume for that might rain day. On those Gumball 3000 pics the guy had the cloth top on.

Well, the first time I saw it in person I was very surprised to see how much brake dust had been caked up on the rims. Also, a good amount of the paint on the front spoiler has been scraped off to the carbon fiber. The time I watched him fire up right before leaving a movie theatre in Metaire I peeked inside and it didnt look all that bad. But certainly not pristine. If you look at the 2 pics of his car on www.ferrarilist.com, then you will get a good idea of how it sometimes looks.
From what I can gather, he drives that car every day unless a problem with it arises. Now that takes balls. His deal is that he considers himself an enthusiast, NOT a collector. And that means hands on as much as possible.

P.S. I need to run to the store to grab the new Forza so I can read how he responded!

Willis in the current issue of Forza he wrote a letter to the editor about the way the article was writen. He was not amused at the "rattiest F50" comment. It was pretty funny. I actually agree with him...drive the car and enjoy!

Willis,
I still have that older Forza issue when he bought the F50 GT. He has a nice framed copy of the cover hanging right behind his desk here in New Orleans. I think the GT he had is the one that sat at symbolic motors for awhile. There was also a cool piece on My Classic Car that featured him and his Shelby Daytona Coupe.

No, never met him before. He's quite well known, actually. His F50 (along with a couple of other toys) appeared in an issue of Forza. A recent Forza issue "razzed" him for showing up in a dirty F50. :-)

1 pic is in the racing section, the other is about halfway down the member section of the gallery.

I interned over at Smith Barney in New Orleans over the summmer and had the awesome pleasure of seeing the black F50 my boss drove on a daily basis. The best was following the F50 on the interstate on the way to see a movie. Then after the movie I got to watch him fire it up and drive off with me drooling behind him. That car really has an incredible sound. Now that I think about it I should have taken a picture!

For a couple of weeks ago I had the extreme luck to see a F50 in the streets of stockholm. And Ive lived happily ever since. :-) I had a camera with me so I was able to snap a shot. So here it comes.

Ill post some pictures from the annual meeting of the swedish club of Ferrari in the next week.
