Tim Hogan... you paid $15K Australian dollars for your 308 ? ($7K- $8K US !!)

Wow, that's an amazing price. Can I ask when and where you bought it ?

The cheapest 308 I have seen advertised here in Oz is $45K AU. That was a green 308 GTB imported from Hong Kong which required a paintjob.

I paid $20k for my 79 GTS. It had a salvage title and limited service records. These 2 factors would scare most people off.

I've spent about $1000 getting some minor leaks, timing problems and electrical gremlins straightened out.

I spent $5k+ on 17" chrome and tires.

Cosmetically, the car looks like it is brand new.

Mechanically it is straight and runs very close to perfect.

The engine and drivetrain on the 308 is sooo simple and straightforward that as long as you do a little preventative maintenance they should run forever.

Mine now has 82,000 miles and I wouldn't sell it for 30K.

Good luck in your search. There are deals to be had. If you accept that minor flaws can be fixed and avoid major flaws then you should eventually be very happy with your purchase of f car art.

1982 GTSi near perfect body (until someone tried to pry off hood emblem)and interior (red/tan): $28K. Additional $15k work. Runs better than my 2 year old Saturn! When time come to sell I will probably ask $28k and write of the $15k as a lesson hard learned!

I got my 79 GTB for $15K Aussie. Market value here is about 65-70k. It was hit pretty good on the left front and left rear. With the cost of parts, repairs, and respray I should have it on the road for about $40k. I probably could have done it for about 33K but the previous owner didn't really look after it, and I want to get it as close to concourse condition as I can. The little things make all the difference.

Bought my 84 Euro 308 GTSI for 32,500 with 17,000 on it 3 years ago. Had a major service done on it for 4,300 and installed a custom made stainless steel muffler/catalytic converter for 1,800.

Purchased my 82 308 gtbi euro last year for 16k, the owner was asking 21k...but took less for money to purchase a race horse. It has 62k miles and is in excellent condition, a little rust at the bottom of the door, leather getting dry and cracked in the seats, mechanically perfect and came with all the tools, jack, spare belts and bulbs. I upgraded the clutch, window motors and fixing to replace timing belts and tensioners. Also upgrading to the direct fire ignition. According to several publications this was the last serial number 308 gtbi 2v built. After doing some of the mechanical I am going to perfect the body and repaint Ferrrari yellow, I also purchased the big euro front spoiler(thought Paul Sloans car was awesome with it), flowmaster muffler (that I am currently fabricating to fit) and 2 hayden 12" cooling fans. Last I will have the leather seats replaced. Then it will be time for a new project.

Got my 77 GTB in the fall of 99. Asking price was $27.5 but got it for $25.5 with 31K on the clock and the 30K service documented with receipts. Also talked to the mechanic who serviced the car.Car was a off frame restore in 88-89 so condition was very good but not show quality. Have only done standard service and added new radio , elect. ign. , tires for total added cost of about $3k. Did not know about Fchat then but lucked out with I think a good solid car with good compression #'s no oil burner and strong clutch and power. Got 42k on it now and still going strong. When I looked I couldn't find one for under $25k.

This thread is blowing the crap out of the Urban Legend that the Garage Queen is not the car to have and that a driven one is best. When the Fat Lady sings the low mileage pristine car wins every time.

Collin, I paid 23,500 for my 78 308gts in Oct. 2001. When it arrived I was shocked at the condition, compared to what it was advertised to be.
I've put close to 10,000 in it so far and it still needs alot more (small things though). It had 64,000 miles on it. One of the things in good shape were the seats. Leather in great shape.
But I think as bill v. pointed out it is getting harder and harder to find 308's in good shape, and likewise as dave328 said the people who have owned these cars in recent years couldn't or wouldn't care for them as we do.

It's still hard for me to believe that someone could even consider neglecting a piece of art such as the F-car.

Bill V.
Fact is, even the newest 308 is now 17 and since prices for them in recent years has allowed a lot of people to buy them who could not or would not care for them well. So a good, well sorted 308 is becoming hard to find. But you are doing the right thing. Patience will pay BIG dividends when the right car turns up. I suspect that in the not too distant future there will be a much bigger differential in the values of nice 308's and almost nice ones than there is today.

There is only so many great cars out there and eventually a prospective buyer will have to accept second best and correct the flaws.

I bought my '84 Euro 308QV this past October for $32K with 41K miles on it. It was in excellent original condition, 30K service was done, windows had been serviced so they roll up/down like lightening, complete records including the import/export paperwork from the German exporter and all of it's EPA/DOT paperwork. I got really lucky with this one. The person I bought mine from was a perfectionist to the obsessive level.

Well , it seems that the rule applies to Ferraris as all cars--it's the condition that really counts more than anything else. Myself, I am frustrated as hell right now trying to find a good-running, well-documented, serviced 308. I'm considering carbed or QV's and will pay up to $28 k for an excellent carbed model or up to $35k for a good QV. I foolishly passed up the very first one I looked at ( the best) because there seemed to be so many others available and I thought for sure that I'd find one even better-not so. So far , I've driven about 8 cars--all with problems . Since Feb, I've been on the verge of buying 2 '77's( one for $30k ;the other for $27k), but both failed pre-purchase inspections ( incomplete 30k services and valve problems)! I'm dying to buy my first Ferrari, but the process is becoming very, very frustrating. Anyway, back to the point of this thread--I haven't seen any 308's of worth for under $27k--at least in the Northeast.

You may loose a bunch of money on a Ferrari but unlike Dot-Com stocks, or most stocks, at least you still have something to show for your loss.

I paid $35k for my '82 308 GTSi back in June 2000, from Foreign Cars Italia. It had 32k miles, and was in great shape. I have since dumped around $15k + in mods and tune ups. My interior is in decent condition, but the leather seats are dry and somewhat alligator skin like. I've tried Griot's garage leather rejuvenator, and Hide food, but they don't seem to bring back the softness. Maybe I'll rip the seats out and throw in some Recaros. Other than that, no major issues with my baby.

Dave: Didn't mean to "rub it in" at all. I too had heard that the 308's could be had for $20K, so I figured my deal was average at best. I kindof bought it on impulse, before I had a chance to discover "Ferrari chat", etc. etc. It's sure been a fun car thus far, and my two-year-old wakes up every morning saying "Go in Red Car!!!" Thanks for your input gentlemen. I guess I got a good deal! Hey, with all I have lost in the NASDAQ in the last two years, I guess it is a LITTLE consolation!!!

My first was a 84 GTSi with 30K on it that I bought from a dealer who told me it had been serviced (no records). Paid 39.5 but 308's were worth more then. I ended up putting a lot of money in it and sold it for 34K with 40K miles on it. The next 2 owners both told me it was a real good car for them. Second was a 77 GTB with about 30K on it. It needed service and some miscellaneous stuff, so bought it for 20K. I fixed it up and drove it some and sold it a little later for 27K which was about what I had in it. The 3rd is a 85 GTBi with 31K on it and needing service. I paid 29K figuring I would put in another 5K, but 5K did not cover it. It's a great car, all sorted and judged 98 points last year and now has 39K. I have learned that it is better to buy a fully serviced and sorted car even if the price seems a little rich. Collin's car sounds like a really good deal and he has a right to rub it in. The leaks are pretty common.

I bought my 82 308GTSi in October 2001 for $31k

-18,000 miles when I bought it now 20,000
-red with beige interior
-2 tires are original
-has two small rust bubbles one on each bottom
of the door
-otherwise very clean car

The only maintence it needed so far was oil change, new plugs, and needs rear brake pads soon

I also installed a nakamici stereo and those new Hella european headlights.
Now I can see where I'm going at night.

Collin I think you got a very good deal for $21K
Buona fortuna!

Sounds like your car is 100% better than the one I purchased for $20,000. Problem is that I have never seen any in any driveable condition go for less than 20K so it looks like that is the price of admission. I hoped mine would not have needed as much work as I had to do but Schitt Happens. Sometimes you win and sometimes ???????????

Bret is right. Good 308s are few and far between. I looked for a long time to find a great QV. When I first found the one I wanted the owner wanted $37K for it but it was like new and I mean near Mint. Near perfect 308s command high $$$$'s. I think you got a good price. Before you purchase tires you may want to look into some 16 inch wheels. Tires for all four 390s will be pretty high $$$. I think they are around $180 ea. or somewhere around there. The rack can be rebuilt for $250. If you do the work yourself it won't cost you much at all to take care of some of these issues. Which Cam seal is leaking?

I think you got a good price from how you described it. Everyone will tell you there are dozens of perfect 308s for sale, for nothing more than $20K. Stupid things like this. I was going to sell my car over last summer and I put a lot of work into checking out the markets and all these alleged perfect, cheap 308s were no where to be found. I say good work, get to correcting leaks as soon as you can, who cares about the paint, maybe look into a set of 16" rims and tires, but not necessary.
Here's a set of rims for sale for a good price (not my style, I think some walnut blasting and silver paint could do wonders with them)

I am just interested in the "going rate" for the 308's these days. And I am curious how everyone here feels that I faired on my own purchase...So, I guess I am the first player! Please specify year, condition, etc. etc.

-1982 Ferrari 308 GTSi
-Paid $21K
-Has 28,600 miles
-Has original TRX tires still on it
-Red with black leather
-Had 30K mile service done a year ago
-Has a cam seal leak, rack and pinion leak, gearbox seal leak.
-Interior is average to above average.
-Needs new tires
-Has one rust "bubble" (nickel size) below left rear side turning indicator light.
-No other rust on vehicle.

So how does this compare to everyone else out there? Opinions? Best wishes.
