Gilles word was worth more than gold... he did follow team orders; Jody won the drivers championship. i'd think he'd stand on the brakes had Rubens pull that as his teammate.

I remember him as I was in highschool and still consider him the ultimate charger! Yes he wouldnt have pulled over for any lame ass 'team order'!! MS and the crew now on the field do not compare at all.
Enzo from the pics Ive seen and the articles Ive read had a great affinity for this man. He is missed :-(

I'm a little surprised and disappointed that more of you don't remember him - 20 years is a long time and I know some of you were not tuned into racing when he raced for Ferrari.

One thing you can be sure of - Gilles would not pull over for ANYBODY!!!

I was devastated when Gilles died. I had just been to my first GP in Long Beach and had been able to get close to the Ferrari pit and take pics. Very exciting for a 15 year old. Here is one of them.

For some reason I can only upload certain pics, I have no idea why. It's a classy shot of him in oversteer from behind, with the right rear up on the curb.

I can send it to anyone that wants. I also have a video of one of the greatest drives in Dijon 1979 I think.

Here's my favorite pic of him and I feel pretty well sums him up, a picture is worth a thousand words.

I remember watching him race Formula Atlantics at Mosport, and later racing F1 at Watkins Glen. He was the last of the real racers. A year before he could drive legally he 'borrowed' the family Pontiac and ran it up to 108 mph in the rain. Unfortunatley he skidded off the road and wrapped it around a tree. The man was fearless and far less corporate than today's racers.

I can remember being at a client's house watching the local news when they broke in with video of the crash. Even though it was 20 years ago, it seems like it was one hour ago.

With him died a part of my love of racing.

Sorry for the double post, but I thought it was important to remember a quality individual.
