Tim, if you plan on running in the Challenge at Indy, I'm sure we could put together a modest crew of, oh, say 50 or 60 for you. You'd be the only guy on pitlane that the F1 teams would envy! Let us know, so we have a "home team" to pull for.

Andrew - have not tried to register it. maybe in a year or so. yes the car is new, right from the dealer two weeks ago. they had a challenge driver back out of the challenge series. I am fortunate to have a guy locally that took care of the challenge cars for some of the drivers for a couple of years. he is also an ex-F1 driver and drove in many other types of racing, has worked for Ferrari, instructor at Skip Barber and others, currently an engineer for Fiat for suspension technology and also a driver for them. He will be going with me this weekend for private driving lessons, I am so lucky.

interesting, didnt think about needing and hand brake. dont know why they put lights, etc. on the car other than it probably was a savings from not having to retool the line to make them or something like that. and if running night races lights always come in handy. no sound proofing, no A/C, custom carbon fiber dash and door panels and center console.

below are all the specs on the challenge car.Intro
Ferraris GT cars have always been highly competitive in the hands of privateers, and their racing achievements have played a fundamental role in the companys motor sport history.
Thats why the Ferrari Challenge one-make racing series was created - it was Ferraris way of getting owners of its road-going GT cars back on the track.

The idea for a specific competition for the 8-cylinder cars first became reality back in 1993 with the 348 Berlinetta. In 1995 it was the turn of the F355, thanks to a special kit developed in-house by Ferrari.

The 2000 season saw the debut of the 400-bhp, V8-engined 360 Modena Challenge alongside the F355. The 360 Modena maintains the same output (400 bhp @ 8,500 rpm) as the standard road car, but incorporates a number of modifications designed to radically improve its performance in track use.

Development
The road-going 360 Modena offers class-leading standards of performance and was the ideal basis for development work on the competition version.
The engineering team concentrated on optimising the weight, tyres, brakes, suspension and gearbox for track use. During development over 6,000 test miles were covered on the Fiorano track and on a number of other tracks used regularly during the Italian championship, including Imola, Monza and Mugello. The 360 Modena Challenge proved to be on average one second per kilometre (0.6 of a mile) quicker than the F355 Challenge.

Minimum Weight
The 360 Modena Challenges minimum kerb weight of 2,574 lbs - 330 lbs less than the F355 Challenge - was partly achieved thanks to the standard cars design which employs aluminium throughout its construction. In addition, considerable attention was paid to reducing weight even further with the result that the Challenge weighs an impressive 264 lbs less than the road-going version.
This reduction was achieved by removing the air-conditioning system, gearchange water/oil heat exchanger, electric window lift mechanisms and all extraneous fittings, sound deadening and interior trim. Weight reduction also involved fitting lightweight front and rear bumpers, a lightweight sports exhaust system, Lexan side windows and Lexan engine cover. Inside the car, carbon fibre was used to trim the central console, tunnel and door panels.

Gear Box
The Challenge version of the 360 Modena incorporates the F1 gearbox - the first time the paddle change has been used on the competition version.
The 360 Modena Challenge uses the same software, effectively excluding the Normal setting so that gearchanges are effected in just 150 milliseconds. In addition, the input parameters for the software have been modified to optimise response allowing, for example, the engine to rev 100 rpm higher during down-swaps to increase engine braking. The standard clutch has been substituted with a racing synterised clutch plate and the gearbox has been fitted with its own oil radiator to reduce operating temperatures during track use.

Suspension
The 360 Modena Challenge is delivered with a standard Fiorano-type suspension set-up.
Modifications to the road cars suspension include replacing the electronic damping system with racing Boge shock absorbers, fitting racing springs and aluminium suspension bushes, lowering the ride height by just over an inch and fitting a stiffer, 22 mm rear anti-roll bar. The P Zero racing slicks were specifically developed by Pirelli for the Challenge series, using the telemetry figures available for the cars performance parameters and suspension geometry, and the car is equipped with 18" BBS light alloy wheels. The Brembo braking system has also been uprated using racing, one-piece aluminium 4-pot calipers and larger vented discs (14 x 1.3" at the front and 13 x 1.1" at the rear) with special air intakes front and rear. The cockpit features a Magneti Marelli digital dash readout which allows the driver to check performance data acquired by the on-board, F1-style telemetry system.

Power train
To make the racing as close as possible, the Challenge series regulations limit the performance modifications that can be made, and all the cars run with strictly standard engines which are sealed by the factory.
A number of modifications have been made for track use, including fitting a larger oil radiator and stiffer engine mounting bushes. Safety features include an automatic fire extinguisher system and FIA-approved safety fuel tank with a capacity of 22 Imperial gallons and two filler pipes for rapid filling.

Ross, as far as I know, challenge cars are all the same (for the World Ferrari Challenge entries) so the UK 360 challenge is definitely NOT road legal - I'm not sure you could register a 360 Challenge car on the road here so I assume you couldn't export it to (more tightly regulated) America as a road car.

What I don't understand is why the F355 Challenge was road legal and the 360 is not. It gets more confusing here, because a road F355 with the challenge kit is definitely road legal but I'm positive an orginal F355 challenge is not road legal (it doesn't have a proper hand brake...etc and the challenge exhaust is WAY illegal).... erm hmmmm

manu, is this the same car as can be bought in europe for the challenge series? and wouldn't it be possible to run it on the road here ? and therefore eventually export it to the usa as a road car?

Tim - have you had a chance to really drive it yet?

I'll bet that it is almost as fast as your F40. How much do 360C weigh? - 1300-1400kg?

Why did it come with headlights/turn signals etc if it was meant for track use only? Surely you'd get rid of all these amenities for a little extra weight loss?
This feels like a stupid question but I take it the care is not air conditioned and has no sound proofing etc (I'm also looking at the door - very little in the way of panelling.....).

If you could get it registered it would be the ultimate road car.

I understand the fact that the challenge is not built to be on the street but I dont see why it cant be made street legal. I do have a title for mine by the way, issued from the selling dealer when I bought it new.

It also came with a certificate that says it is meant to be driven off road only. The car has headlights, brake lights, turn signals, wipers, safety belts, cats, etc. if I can get it registered in a place that does not require emissions I dont understand what would keep one from registering it for the street. I may just have to try and get it registered and see what happens. Know anyone that has done it? There is a guy here in town that drives his challenge car on the street, he just puts his dealer plate on the car and drives everywhere.

Challenge cars cannot be made street legal in the US. They are designed, built, and sold as race cars. They aren't even issued a title. If you want a challenge car on the street you will have to get a regular 360 and modify it to challenge specs.

A challenge car may not be street-legal but the components can be fitted on a street 360. You could order the parts through the dealer but it's not encouraged.

They say it cant be street legal but I'm not sure why. It has lights, wipers, cats, etc. sure it looks racey on the inside and if its registered some place that does not require emissions I dont see what the problem is. can someone enlighten me?

Nice car, Tim. Pretty sure it cannot be made street legal in the states, Manu. Though a street version might find a customer or two were that to be the case, I think.

That is one AMAZING car!

De-cat the car immediately Tim, it'll sound great. I know the 355 Challenge cars are reasonably easy to get roadworthy but all 360 Challenge cars are NOT roadable right????

The car looks great. Probably drives like a rocket too.

thanks Bretm, I agree, the Viper is an AWESOME track car with the shear brute HP. its heavy in the corner and a little slower but the HP makes up for it coming out of the corner. I decided like you that the 360 is much more beautiful and I hate the sound of the Viper, sounds like a UPS truck and absolutely love the sound of the 360 and would rather have a finess car than a "force" it to happen car.

if you notice the engine pic, the muffler is much much smaller than a stock 360. after I run it this coming weekend I will let you know better how it compares to the viper and will also decide if I want to remove the cats for an even better sound. I heard that Ferrari of Seattle has a straight pipe that they make for it. their car sounds awesome with it.

VikenB - the tires currently are Pirreli street tires - they call them rain tires for the challenge. my Pirreli slicks will be here monday or tuesday, the same ones they use in the 360 challenge series, $1600 for the set, way expensive compared to the HUGE hoosier's on the viper. if you are interested in the specs for the slicks for tracking your car let me know and I will email them to you.

so next weekend first time on the track with it, PIR in Phoenix, time to get to know the car, figure out the F1 shifter, etc. even loading it on and off the trailer I was nearly putting a hole in the floor board looking for the clutch and grabbing with my right hand for the shifter. I know I am going to blow some down sifts the first few times on the track looking for the same things and then remembering the F1 shifter.

thanks for all the compliments, I really love this car, it is sooooo coooool looking especially in person, the pics dont do it justice. there is just something about a race preped car, especially a Ferrari. sick part is I have almost as much in the viper as I do in the 360 but I know I will love the 360 much more. gotta get that viper sold and fast.

Cool. I would have to agree that the 360 is a better choice for a track car than the Viper. Regardless of any lap time, acceleration, braking, etc just look at how awesome the challenge car is. Congrats.
