Make absolutely sure you have resistor spark plugs. My car had terrible AM radio reception, and bad interference when using a Family Service Radio. Found I had standard NGK plugs, not the resistor variety. I quick swap and fixed! |

<<The reason I thought it was the noise suppressor was that the interference just started mid way through a journey after about 3/4 hour of normal listening. After that every time I switched the radio off for a few minutes and then back on the sound would be fine for about 1 minute, then the noise would reoccur.>>> Wouldn't hurt to replace the suppressor. You can pick one up a Radio Shack. Being able to clear the problem by turning the radio off then back on, opens a whole new can of worms. Good luck.

I dont see why you couldnt buy a non-ferrari filter. The only difference between a ferrari resistor and any other one is the ferrari one needs an expensive service every 30k miles. (joke) Ferrari probably doesnt even make the part. |

Thanks for your help so far - car is going in for service in 4 weeks so will have the leads/cap checked then. The reason I thought it was the noise suppressor was that the interference just started mid way through a journey after about 3/4 hour of normal listening. After that every time I switched the radio off for a few minutes and then back on the sound would be fine for about 1 minute, then the noise would reoccur. Is there any value in replacing the block as a test? If so can I buy a non-Ferrari one? |

If it's a whine the varies with RPM it's the alternator. If it's a crackle/popping that varies with RPM it's plugs or wires. You have ruled out the possibility of it being picked up by the antenna because it comes across with cassette tape. That leaves the DC power wires to the radio as the most likely path. It's best to kill the RFI at the source then worry about line filters. |

Rob, Your plug wires are probably going south on you and the noise your picking up is them crossfiring. You might also want to check you distributor cap/rotor and make sure they aren't burned. I doubt its the noise filter, as they are a simple resistor package, and don't usually go bad. |

Guys -looking for some help as I know next to nothing about this sort of thing.... My 308 GT4 radio (and cassette) has started to have a lot of interference noise - at first I thought it was a blown speaker, but on closer investigation it seems to be motor interference rather than speaker problems. As a first step I am going to replace the noise suppression block on the live lead going into the radio (its about the size of a relay). Do I have to buy a Ferrari part for this or is this a non-specific part? |
