Thanks Dan. They really are pieces of art, color contrast, composition. I love them.

Thank you all. You are very kind. As far as pointers, I use the longest lenses I can to get tight on the car (most of these were shot from spectator areas with a 300-600mm lens) with a very wide open stop to make the back ground go soft. I use a very fast shutter speed (1000th sec) if I want to stop the car. If I want to show blur in a pan I drop that to about a 1/60th. I also do a lot of color correction and tweaking in Photoshop. Unfortunately, I have enough in lens and computer equipment to buy a nice Ferrari. Plus, I have spent 25 years practicing. Backgrounds are what most people don't pay any attention to. Find an angle with a background that doesn't fight with the image and adds something if at all possible. See below, the background makes the shot.

I knew you had to be Dan! These photos are gorgeous! Many here would be willing to buy prints, I'm sure. Would you mind telling us the F-stop, Shutter speed and Film for the first 2? :-) I'm an amateur photographer myself and am heading to the track next week, hope to snap a few. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Dan, it killed me to miss the Ferrari Challenge at VIR this year. I used to live in Lynchburg. I've worked at VIR doing F&C and attended 90% of the events. I recently moved to FL and was so happy to see the pics you posted.

Love your work Dan - any pointers on how to take great action car shots?

Jim E

Thanks for asking. I guess most people would just go ahead and grab them. Feel free to enjoy them for your personal use (please don't sell them). I shoot motorsports for a living, mostly for NASCAR teams. Vintage sportscar racing is more of a hobby/passion for me. I'm hoping to set up a site sometime or find a gallery where I can sell prints of my vintage stuff.

Hey Dan, I make a calendar for my personal use that has a "Ferrari a month". Do you mind if I use your shots as Ms. Oct-Dec?

Jay,
Thanks. Yes I am a commercial photographer, but I love to shoot vintage cars, especially Ferraris. Check out www.motorrats.com or www.danrouth.com. Hers another one.

Dan those are fantastic photos! Tell me you are a photographer! I love how the depth of field is perfect for the car, yet the foreground and background are out of focus. Real nice.
