Of course, the problem with cell-phones is that you can't broadcast to the entire group at once. Such capability has been especially useful for the "lead car" (usually me) to broadcast back to the group on traffic conditions that might make it easier (or more dangerous) to pass. John, most FCA events should generate a small surplus ($50-$150). Of course, bigger track and/or weekend events can generate a substantial surplus that can be given back to the members in ways such as this. We've not only bought the FRS radios to loan out, in the Alabama chapter we also have a club helmet for loan, and a helmet-to-helmet communicator set. If you don't have any local "pay" events, and you want to organize a future event at Talladega, the FCA GA chapter can keep any surplus generated for similar use. We in Alabama haven't been looking to add any more loaner equipment, so I've used recent event surpluses to buy snacks and door prizes and overnight guard service at the hotel for the events that have generated the excess.

We as a group (FCA GA) need to somehow generate a little capital to buy a few radios. For now, cell phones will have to do. The last time, we were not even smart enough to think about that. Live and learn. |

In Alabama, whenever we do group drives, we use FRS/GMRS radios. We set the channel to 3-08 (channel 3, sub channel 8) and it's been great with no stray interference. Many of us use a headset or at least an earpiece. We can't use them in VOX mode since the Ferraris are too loud, but using the headset activated by the PTT button on the hand radio works great. Last year, I actually bought 4 units (owned by FCA-SE/AL as club property) to use as "loaners" for our group drive events. Do you GA folks do something similar?
