I drove it for the first time this afternoon. Lots of hills and tricky turns. Fun, fun! |

I did meet up with Tommy at the Barber Motorsports track Sunday March 30 for the Historical Races. I hadn't realized that they offered an open "touring" session on the track at lunchtime, but at Tommy's suggestion I took advantage of it. What an awesome track! If you would like to see the layout, an interactive "tutorial" on that track, and see an online movie of driving it, you can go to www.fca-se.org/barber_track.htm and check out the link near the bottom of the page. I also looked for FCA member Pat Ryan, who told me he'd be there. I never did find him, but I did find his blue Sunoco Camaro, and his beautiful Ford GT-50 Mk 1 RHD. Fabulous cars! You can see the Sunoco at his website at www.PrismaCars.com but the GT40 is a recent addition to his collection and isn't on the website yet. By the way, for those of you who have met Tom Turner at our Talladega Grand Prix events (he's usually our driving instructor), he took first place in his class with his track-prepped RX7.

I'll be down at the Barber track Sunday March 30... Tom Turner is running his RX7 in an SCCA classics race and it seems like a good excuse for me to check out the track in person, even if I don't get to drive it. If any of our B'ham folks are going to be around, let me know and we can hook up.

I've been talking to the Barber folks for several months, long before the track actually opened. Rough costs for track rental are $10,000 to $15,000 for a weekend day. We can get it for a weekday at around $5,000. The Porsche Club has made this their "home track" now instead of Road Atlanta. I've spoken with their main guy about working a join event kind of thing with them. On their "driving school" kind of weekends, they normally have about 20 cars per "group", and generally about 4 groups that do 30 minutes on, 90 minutes off, all day. We discussed having Ferraris take one entire "group" so we'd all have the track to ourselves (our marque) during those times. It could potentially be a more cost effective way to have access to the track without having to wait for a major event like a major annual Regional or National event. Cost per car would be around $350 for the day. Alternatively, several of us have talked about getting 10 or 15 folks to rent the track for a weekday, having it all to ourselves almost like we do at Talladega GPR. This is a beautiful track, as Dr. Tommy's pictures showed in another thread. It's also a challenging track, even more so than Road Atlanta (and if that doesn't scare you, it should), with many blind hills and blind curves and cement walls. If you'd like to look at an overhead of the track so you can see the actual layout, click here.
