thanks for all the great info, you guys have alll been first class !!!! I'll keep you all posted of my search for the perfect F-car !! I don't want to jump into anything and keep telling myself not to purchase until Christmas, (I'll have more knowledge (maybe) by then ;-)
By the way, I'm a coverted Porshe owner, I have a feeling that once i make the move to a F-car, I'll never go back to "the other side" THANKS AGAIN,
John Perry

I have a '77 carb car that will be for sale in several weeks. I am finishing up TONS of service and upgrades. New A/C system with Rotary compressor. Fresh cam belts and seals. Fully detailed engine bay. Great paint and interior. Upgraded suspension with 16" wheels and Italian design adjustable shocks/springs. Ive done tons of work to it, it will be ready to drive and enjoy. Selling because I bought a Daytona and cant have both. Its blue chiaro with tan interior. Has tubi. Let me know if your interested. I can tell you from experience you cant buy a $25K 308 and turn it into my car for the difference in price!

I think my budget is going to limit me to a 77-79 carb, or a 80-82. i need to only spend around 25,000 on her.

but hey don't they say you never,
"buy a Ferrari", you, "buy your first Ferrari" hehehe. just don't know if I wanna go carb or injected I plan on driving about three days a week to work. (hour commute) and around town on weekends. so I guess it's to carb or not to carb ??

John, there are several of us Ferrari owners here in Huntsville. Go to our local website at
www.fca-se.org and you can get my contact information... give me a phone call and we can get together.

No problem getting work done on the 308. Several of us take our exotics to the same place, and the owner does quality work and is very knowledgeable about F-cars. In fact, I stopped by his place (International Motors) at lunchtime today and he adjusted the mixture on mine at no charge. He recently changed out my clutch (50,000 miles) and did a great job. Very knowledgeable and fairly priced.

Otherwise, you can get simple work done at the BMW or Mercedes dealerships, or you can always have it trailered over to FoA!

Regarding insurance... I have mine through AllState, no problem, and can refer you to my agent if you wish. There are lots of companies that will insure your car, especially if you're not going to use it as a daily driver but as a "second" (extra) car. Do a search here on FerrariChat for the word "insurance".

Mike

Great thanks for the info, i'm planning on going out to visit FOA as soon as I get a Sat off. May biggest concern as of right now is insurance, any company suggest, most i have contacted don't insure F-cars :-( also how much can i expect to pay. i'm 29, and male.

Definitly forget the fixer upper. Buy the best car you can (especially interior). Body work is not a huge deal. Mechanicals on a 308 are relatively not a big deal to repair as long as you have between 10k and 75k miles on the car. If HP is not a concern, you will get the best buy on a GTSi. The best all around car will be a QV. Mechanically, the '76-'79 308 is the easiest mechanically and has GREAT power. However, it's hard to find one with a nice repaint (and you can forget finding an originally painted one in good condition). The paint quality got alot better on the GTSi (but the HP is noticably less and the interior is a bit more fragile).

REAL nice example of both will have an asking price around $33-$36K. You will probably want to upgrade to 16" QV wheels, as tires are hard to get otherwise. REAL nice QVs are becoming more rare and they will be asking between $40-$45K (which is getting into the moderate mileage 328 area). Knock $5K off these numbers if the car has over 50K miles but still looks real presentable. Anything for sale for less than these amounts should sound scary.

You should speak with the guys at Ferrari of Atlanta and let them keep an eye out for you. You will have to convince them you are serious because you can imagine the zillions of guys a year who inquire about the "Magnum car". Also, make sure to subscribe to the Ferrari Market Letter to see most of the cars in the country for sale. They are a sponsor on this site an offer a fine discount.

Good luck and don't be scared to make the move. Expect to pay an average of $1,200 a year on maintenance if you are the usual owner (not including tires, oil, fuel, wax, etc.). As this car will not be your only car, you could do all of the work yourself and save about $1,000 a year if you are very patient and determined. I'll be honest, working on a Ferrari is a pain in the ass beyond changing oil, filters, coolant & brake fluid. Belts are a real mother..... and will require attention.

Check on Ebay my friend. There are plenty of 308's there. Some priced really well too. But a little caution is a must on ebay. Good luck.
