Brian - The only public gun range in North Georgia that's worth a darn is the Dekalb Firing Range in Lithonia. Check the "blue pages" as they have strange hours. No full auto there either. It's a good place to sight in the deer rifle. I'd be real careful to wear a helmut and kevlar when visiting as there is no supervision.

Check these sites out and then we will talk. You don't have to join gun clubs in order to shoot at matches. In fact, your first match is free. IPSC/USPSA involves time-vs-accuracy with a pistol (usually a Glock G-35 .40 or a 1911 A1 .45) and a minimum of five 10-round mags. The timer starts and you run as fast as you can around walls & through doorways & stuff to shoot stationary & moving targets. We do this at Cherokee Gun Club in Gainesville on every 2nd Sat & at South River in Conyers every 3rd Sunday.

A three-gun match occurs every quarter at Shouth River which involves the same thing except you also use a rifle (usually an AR-15 varient, Mini 14 or AR-10) and a shotgun (12ga auto 5 with mag extension to hold 9 rounds). An M1 would suck at this, but a Springfield M1-A1 .308 is a must for all collections. It is a no excuses semi-auto M-14 (though I'd rather have an Armalite AR-10).

No gun clubs allow full auto. Sorry, Brian. Most gun clubs are founded by trap & skeet guys who are trying to keep the neighbors calm. Trust me guys, once you have shot an IPSC match, you will never be satified with just blasting away in a field or sitting in a smokey indoor range. You are classified by your skill level, so even if you are a first timer there is a chance you could win a trophy. First timers usually show up with something like a Berretta 92fs 9mm, Sig 26 or Glock 19. Tell me what you have & I'll tell you which division to shoot in. All you need is 300 rounds, a gun, at least five 10-round mags, four magholders & a holster of any kind (+ glasses & ear protection).

Now, River bend does not allow IPSC/USPSA because they have a rapid-fire ban (booo!). However, they do have a monthly high power rifle match where you compeat against the Army Team. It's a blast! There is also a very small (5 people) Wed night IDPA match at American Marksman and a monthly match at South River. IDPA is like IPSC except more geared towards the thought that someone is shooting back at you (more realistic). IMHO, it's not a fun as IPSC because you generally shoot 6 rounds per stage, whereas you shoot 28 to 38 rounds in IPSC (times 6 stages per match).

All of these matches involve shooting from 10am until 3pm. It will definitly get you over your shooting jones. After the match, you can shoot your other guns if you are not too tired to. If you want a smaller taste, check out GPSL (Gwinnett Practical Shooters League) every Wednesday night in Lawrenceville.

Next Saturday is the Cherokee match. Who is coming with me?

The only place I use is America Classic indoor shooting range on Medlock Bridge. I would love to go shooting outside somewhere.

I too like to shoot now and then. I like to shoot clay pigeons and also "plink" with an M16 that I own. Like Terry, I do not want to pay stupid money for a gun club--Anybody know of a municipal shooting range or quarry that we can go too?

I know John is an avid and competitive shooter. I used to enjoy this hobby a good deal, but have been totally out of it for 10+ years.

I dropped by a local vintage gun store today and was looking around. Im going to gun show in Cumming tomorrow. I may purchase a restored M1 WWII vintage rifle. Ive always wanted one.

If I get it, I will want to shoot it. I dont want to pay stupid money to join a gun club that I wont use all that often. Anyone else shoot much and/or know of some place where a 30-.06 rifle can be fired safely without causing a riot?
