Jeff, as I said, no rush, so don't feel sorry. Before mid October I won't have time nor resources to work on the F1 footage. But then it will start with full steam. I'm quite certain we will have it all together to put in our stockings come December.

Andreas: It's possible (?) that the 20's footage in this latest batch is included in the "Shell's History" video I sent to you, and the '55 LeMans crash is included in the "Fangio" video I sent to you. It's also possible that Jack's stuff is totally different.

I haven't got hold of Pete yet, and I haven't made time to verify the content on the other videos on my shelf. Sorry.

Hmm, how about that:

I'll buy an old 16mm projector off ebay and transfer them myself. Won't be perfect, but the quality isn't that great to begin with. The costs then should be really low. We could offer it here to interested folks for ten bucks a DVD including shipping etc.

I think they are under a minute each so I don't know if it is worth the effort.

There appears to be NO sound indeed.

Format is 16mm.

Well, fate gave us the role of the curators of old F1 race footage. So I guess we have to play along...

Jack, can you give me an estimate on how much footage we're talking here altogether? That will allow me to get an estimate from the transfer studio and we can put a package offer together.

I take it these rolls don't have sound?

It is interesting though. Reminds me of an old game for the Dreamcast playstation. You had to race a F1 car from the twenties around some of the tracks you mention. From that game I even have the track layout.

Oh Andreas....

I'm gonna make you feel sick today....

My girlfriend just came down from the attick with more reels....

This time it concerns 16mm reels which are 1980's copies of vintage ones.

They LOOK to be VERY short but the good thing is that each reel is accompanied by a descriptive page.

This is what they are:

1921 French Grand Prix @ Le Mans (Jimmy Murphy won in a Duesenberg).

1922 French Grand Prix @ Strasbourg (Won by Felice Nazzaro on Fiat).

1925 French Grand Prix @ Monthlery (Won by Robert Benoist, later tortued to death by the Gestapo. In the same race, Antonio Ascari crashed to death in his Alfa Romeo. Antonio was the father of later double Ferrari F1 Champion Alberto Ascari).

1955 Le Mans 24 horror crash of Mercedes into the Grand Stand. (No shots of the crash itself but shots of explosions & flames etc.).

I have scanned a still from the 1921 reel. As you can see, the quality is nowhere near as good as the 1963 footage (of course).

Jack

Only horror stories that I know are Willy Mairesse's crash in the second lap at Flugplatz (same spot as Amar and Jens....) whereby an ambulance man was killed and Mairesse damaged his arm in such a way that it ended his racing carreer.

In lap 3 Bruce McLaren crashed at the same spot due to steering trouble and in the crash he was knocked unconcious and hurt his knees.

Well, scan and post here what you got. If it is awesome, I could burn another set of DVDs. I still have of course the 'project' file to make the DVDs (the biggest piece of the process).

FChat resolution isn't bad btw: We are limited here to 640 and the TV NTSC limit is 720, so it is almost the same.

BTW: I used Jeff's starting grid directly in the DVD.

Also if you got some background about the race, that wouldn't hurt. All I know is who won it, but no other results.

Hi aAndreas,

just got home from a short break and it's quite a surprise!

Great shots but what a pity it stops at the end of the qualifying... :-(

I can identify the following drivers / cars:

Picture 1:
Graham Hill, BRM P57

Picture 2:
None

Picture 3:
# 4 = Trevor Taylor, Lotus 25
# 30 = Tim Parnell, Lotus 18/21
# 3 (canopy only) = Jimmy Clar, Lotus 25

Picture 4:
None

Picture 5:
The barrel... GRINNNNNNNNNNN

Picture 6:
The guy swapping the wheel on the # 23 Porsche 718 is Count (!) Carel Godin de Beaufort. That is his personal Porsche which he would race under # 17 (NOT 23 as in teh picture).
His Ecurie Haaksbergen also entered a Porsche 718 for Gerhard Mitter under # 26. De Beaufort would die at the 'Ring one year later.

Picture # 5:
The guy on the left, with the goggles round his neck is Jimmy Clark. The guy in the middle is Graham Hill again.

This is a complete listing of the entries for the race (hope it's somewhat readable).

Good news:

Just managed to burn the first NTSC DVD with menu and all. Works fine on my cheapo DVD player.

At this moment I got the following people who ordered the DVD:

Lawrence
Jack
Anthony
Norman
Andreas
Jack Habitts (free, provided original)

If somebody else wants a copy, let me know please ASAP.

Given a total cost of $ 275 and some shipping and burning, I set the price at $ 60 per copy.

So may I politely ask you to either send me a check (send me an email if you need my address) or transfer the money to my paypal account:

[email protected]

Once I have your payment, I'll burn you a DVD (or tape if you prefer, let me know in that case).

Actually I'm thinking I could make two versions of the footage on the DVD. Since it is not that long, there is enough space left. One version would be as is and the other one have subtitles.

How about that?

I guess back in those days the whole family got involved with the husband/boyfriend's racing.

But it's interesting to see a fellow changing a tire in a sportcoat!

Please note, that FChat uses a lower res than the actual film is. The stuff looks a lot better on DVD.

Also I was thinking about adding some text before/after the footage, that would put it into context of the year and championship. I could write something up, but maybe we have some talented writers in the forum who'd like to take this on?

I just watched it. They did get the sound as well. It is rather short as predicted, around 5 minutes. It is some footage from the practice session, shows the cars, some drivers (I'm not good at spotting these guys, so can't give you any names), sport commentator, press, pit mechanics and lots of fans. The German Gemuetlichkeit around the old ring. Finally some shots as the cars prepare for the GP, then it stops. Looks like the beginning of a bigger report, it is done very professionally, so I doubt it was an amateur.

Now for the big question: This is all German sound. Some people are talking and sometimes it is a voice over. Of course I understand it, but what about you guys? Should I make an attempt at subtitles? I can technically, but it is a lot of effort. However some stuff is just hilarious:

"These tires are good for an entire race. If you have to change tires during the race, you have already lost."

How times have changed...

So far I got Lawrence, Anthony and myself, which makes the individual costs just about $ 90. Any other takers?

Hi Andreas,

great to hear that it made it safe & sound.

Please don't cut any "souvenir" frames out of it as that will disturb the sound track.

Rob,

I found it in Germany when I purchased a small collection of race memorabilia and in the end the seller went into the cellar and came up with this reel.

No idea who shot it but it looks to have been edited.

Best regards,
Jack

Wouldn't you be better off getting it converted to AVI or WMV or some other computer format (even DVD, although then you'd need a DVD burner) so you can creat CD copies easily and distribute to more people...Just about everyone has a pc.

Hope it pays for itself.

I figured we should make this a separate thread, as it has become a project of its own. Jack Habbits has 500 feet of original 35 mm footage from the 1963 Nuerburgring GP and I'm planning on having it transferred onto Mini DV and then either DVD or VHS.

Upload
Here a still frame of Lorenzo Bandini in a BRM taken from this footage.

I checked with my film shop and the original quote unfortunately went up as we also want to transfer the sound track. So the conversion now costs $ 425.

I'm willing to pay this upfront and then split the costs with anybody who wants a copy (VHS or DVD is your choice).

So please let me know by email or a post here whether you're interested or not.
