Hi, a late reply.

"what is the manufacture date on your plate (inside the driver's door jam)?"

I promised to check this and I did but I couldn't find any figures that made any sense to me. Is there some kind of code or something?

BobD, you are right. The leather is very light crema.
Comparing with magnolia Rolls Royce leather, the Ferrari leather is still lighter.
I personnnaly like the tan color better :-)

Vilamoura, unless there's some glare from the sun it looks like you have the "Crema" interior, not "Tan". That's probably why you have black carpets rather than tan.

I'm not sure I've seen the Crema interior in a red 328.... cool!

I was just trolling Ebay for 328 stuff, and ran across another 87 White/Tan GTS. While looking through the pictures, I noticed that the armrests on the doors of that car are black, while the armrests on my car are tan. I always find interesting the little differences on the cars, even of the same model year and color combinations.

Anyone want to continue this thread? I think that it may be interesting to discuss any specific 328 issues. Perhaps experiences with service, what to look out for, common trouble spots, performance ect... I am learning a great deal from you all. Thanks!

Mark,
I think any year 328 is a great car. Which one you choose depends on personal preference and how much you want to spend. The 88.5 cars brought a number of changes, the most obvious being the convex wheels which changed the wheel offset. That combined with a new steering rack and a suspension change referred to as "anti-dive" made these cars steer and handle different though if there is any real performance increase, I don't know. There were other small changes as well like getting rid of the front bonnet strut with the stop button in it and replacing it with a gas strut. Personally, I prefer the way the newer cars steer, etc. but I like the earlier wheel style better. I chose an 89 because there are very few early cars that met my criteria among GTB's. Also, I had owned an 87 GTS a few years back so I wanted to see for myself if the newer cars were that much different or better. So far, I am glad that I bought the 89, but they are significantly more money and I wouldn't really argue with someone who thought the early cars were a better value. If you are in the market for a 328 and money is not an issue, I would definitely try both a pre 88.5 and a later car. I have never heard anything negative about the ABS systems. They were used on Mondials as well beginning in 88. Hope this helps.

Is the ABS anti-lock feature someting to look for?
Do you guys like them or is it just another thing to go wrong?

When shopping for a 328 are there any other reasons to look for a 89 over 88.5 or 88? 87?

In the US, I believe the 89 model year begins with about 78800. My 79392 was built 2/89. In the US, all 89 model year cars are ABS, no 88's have it (althought the late ones have "ABS" wheels.) ABS was offered earlier in Europe. I assume Peter's car has ABS and would be considered an 89 in the US. I think we (being US) have a tradition of the new model year appearing in the fall and foreign manufacturers follow it here. I had an 87 328 GTS that was built in 12/86.

Peter, Steve may have a good point here.... outside the US, it may be based on actual year of manufacture or registration. BTW Peter, what is the manufacture date on your plate (inside the driver's door jam)? I'm about to post all the results from this thread. I'll try to get to it this weekend... some very interesting stuff!

BobD -- I think outside the US the "model year" can be the "year of manufacture" or "year of first registration" rather than the equivalent US model year -- were you thinking Peter S.'s SN 79043 was too high to be an "88"?

Again, register your 328 here now if you haven't already.

BobD and Russf-
Right now "my" 328 is in Missouri. It just finished its inspection (flying colors), and they are going to detail it. It will be delivered mid-April. I'd get it sooner, but I'm going to be in and out of town the next few weeks. That's probably a good thing-keeps my mind off it. Russ-I noticed you're from Washington. I hope the weather is being cooperative. What better way for you to enjoy Easter weekend!

By the way the car is a clone of your with the late model wheels.

Dave
I purchased my car from a dealer called "The Last Detail" in Chicago with 7200mi last May. It was on consignment there and I took it for a whole lot less than 64K. As soon as I received it the car went right to the dealer for a 30K service with all belts plus a set of HP Ultra's, clutch and a water pump. Also the Stone guard treatment. I did not want to tie the car up later so I did it all at once. Maybe it's the same car. It's as close to perfect as it gets.

Ralph,
Lake Forest offered me your car in the summer of 2000 for 64K and it needed service. I had to laugh at the price. Then I noticed it turned up a year later at a much more friendly price and I assume that's where you bought it. Supposed to be an excellent car! Lake Forest never called me again, just as well.

Tim,
It would be difficult to quantify handling differences without having identically prepared GTS and GTB doing timed laps with the same driver. From the seat of my pants, the GTB's are much tighter and nicer driving even in everyday situations. The difference in stiffness is very evident. I also have a 85 308 GTBi and have had the opportunity to drive a GTS back to back and found the difference to be much greater than I anticipated. I had a 77 GTB at the same time as my 87 GTS and while the cars are pretty different, I liked the stiffness of the 77 and never bought another GTS after that. I should add that with 348's there was a big jump in rigidty from 308/328, so the difference may not be so noticeable on newer cars. Most people will always prefer the targas, but I think if more got to try GTB's they would be more popular than they are. Perhaps some others out there have some experience they can share. I would like to know if there is any concrete measurable differences myself.

Ralph, your transport story brings back great memories. I bought mine from a dealer on the west coast and had it shipped back to Dallas... felt like the longest 2 week wait of my life. When Peterson's Transport "finally" pulled that massive covered truck up in front of our house, the neighbors came flocking with curiousity.

There were a lot of nice cars on that two level rig but my eyes only focused on one. He told me to hop on and we took the lift (elevator-like) to the second level and pushed out the 328 for all to view. Wow, that's when my heart really started pounding and the reality sank in... I actually own a Ferrari! That was 3 years ago.

Russ, enjoy the moment! Let us know how everything goes.

Hi Russ, I also bought my 328 sight unseen. I purchased it from a high end dealer in Chicago and over a two week period I had several employees including the owner do a "walk around".
They also read the service records to me and emailed me extra pictures. I guess they wanted me to sleep at night. After delays in the transport to Boston Ma, It wasn't till the truck driver called me on the rode and described the car to me that I felt really good about it. He had to inspect it before loading it. When the truck arrived, a thirty year wait was finally over! A Ferrari of my very own.The driver asked me if I wanted to take a peek (Stupid Question). When he lifted the cover with his white gloves on I almost fell over. Since that day it has been an experience that hard to describe.

Russ- Congrats! Mine comes in 2 weeks, which means you'll have a little extra F-time under your belt. Jealous. Mine's an '86, red over tan.

Mark- I've just gone through the search, and while cost is always an issue, so is peace of mind. If the latter is more important to you, go through a dealer only. Even so, you shouldn't pay a dollar over $52K. I'm sure, like me, you've seen them anywhere between 40K-70K. Natch, be leery of the lower, and skip the higher. There are plenty out there, mostly between 48K and 52K, all good examples. Enjoy!

Mark: You should be able to get a nice car in the mid 40's. Make sure to get records! I wouldn't take a car very serious if the owner didn't care enough to keep the records. Kind of s.o.p. for a Ferrari owner. My manual says top speed of 156 mph. Don't remember the 0-60 but somehow 5.4 seconds rings a bell. However, the limitation is not the car as much as how well you can handle a gated 5 speed. I have had my car to 130 which was truly exciting and really very smooth. Had a lot left to go, but I didn't. The 328 has all the classic looks with a little more of a heart pounding power. Great choice for a pleasure vehicle. I really love mine as you might decern. By the way, I bought my car for about 42K before tax and license, it had 32k miles and the 30K service was complete (with records). The car is about nearly perfect. When I get it back from the air dam replacement and the chips in the front paint repaired, it should be about perfect. Hope this gives you some help and encourgement.

I'll play, '87 GTS white/tan 67523, Dallas. I get it back tomorrow after a 3 week hiatus, I can't wait!

Mark, no the AC doesn't work. It blows cold air, but doesn't keep your car cool.

I have a 1987 328GTS red/tan in upstate NY and love it. Look for oil leaks, earlier body damage, uneven tire wear, worn interior components and paint damage. It is often better to buy the very best car you can afford instead of one that needs much. Tools, service records and documentation are important to an upper value car. Buying someone else's nightmare will only result in agony and disapointment especially when you try to get your investment back out.

I looked at a nice 88 today but does not have records and docs. Dealer wanted $49,900

What's the difference between 88 and 89's? 88.5?

In shopping for a 328 is there any thing to stay away from in the early 86 or 87's ?

Whats the best $$/value in the 328's

What is 0-60mph times? Top speed?

Does the AC work?

It's been a while since we've done a poll and there are a lot of new FC'ers here now. How many of you own 328s?
State your year, model, color, VIN & location. Here's mine:

'89 GTS, red/tan, 78987, Dallas
