Brian- That is exactly what I was thinking. Although I took a little hit on it($11.5K), the repair costs I was quoted by my mechanic would have been:

1)ECU "slow down lights" ($1400)
2)AC "relay panel replaced ($1400)
3)Cam gaskets ($700)
4)Cam seals "engine needs removal" ($4000)

If you had kept the car, you would end up with way more than $61.5 in it. Take the money and run, you did OK.

I would definetly take the $55K and let him worry about the headaches.

Jim, i dont think anyone who's spending $60k for a car is going to buy it without test driving it.

Because of all the issues, I ending up selling for only $50K. Do you guys think this was to low for model/ year/miles? I had a total of $61,500 invested into it.

Marcus- The AC is always hot and the regular vents (AC off) is very speradic from hot to warm to cold and back to hot again. This is when the temp is at an even setting. I just had the wiring (white plastic piece burned) replaced for the AC two weeks ago and now its back to blowing hot air again. What does it cost to replace the entire AC unit (worst case scenario)?

Steve- This is a 1989 U.S. TR with 19.5K miles, good condition, 15K major service complete, water pump replaced at 17K miles. Thanks.

I don't have experience of the leaking seal charges and will be getting the air hopefully just charged next week and will give a price then. Good luck on the sale.

rossa4sale -- How about a little more info (miles, colors, conditions, time/miles from last major serice, version)? Your $60K price was/is very reasonable IMO (assuming decent marks in all catagories) and includes the right kind of discount for any 13~14 year old car -- but I'm generally with Brian s. on this one. I think you'd be lucky to get all those problems addressed by a professional for less than $5K (depending on where the oil leaks are, parts required, etc.), and the new owner will probably pay closer to $10K to get it all done (but could have a freshly serviced 5-lug TR for $65K total).

I just had all of the cam-covers seals redone yesterday, and it was around $400 for labor + parts.

The AC can be quite expensive. Is it blowing hot air all the time (fuse box failure) or only when the AC is on?

An 89 for $55K sounds like a deal both ways IMHO.

Jim- Thanks for the info. I understand your concern but if a buyer is going to be paying $60K for a car, they will most likely want to test drive it. This particular buyer drove about 3 hours to see the car and came with a money order for $5K (deposit), so I was under the assumption he was "serious". On the technical side, do you have any experience on what the repair costs of fixing leaking cam seals and leaking cam-covers (both sides) runs? How about the AC? What would the worst case repair bill be? Thanks.

My 87 TR is for sale for 60k also, 16k miles, Calif. car , clean with no flaws, except seat belt(passenger, disconnected), needs a/c charge, tomorrow, warning lights come on intermittent, disconnected today till relays replaced, oil will not leak but will sweat from seals like a porsche, no big deal unless you have a puddle, but the biggest problem is YOU LET A STRANGER DRIVE YOUR FERRARI, he crashes or misses a gear...ooops...you pay, not him, no, a prospective buyer is a passenger until he buys, then he is an owner and can drive...Don't sweat the small stuff, you have 1 of the greatest cars ever produced in the history of cars. Where do you live? These fixes are not 5k.

Hey Guys,

I'm selling my 89 TR and a prospective buyer came and test drove it today. During the drive, the AC goes out (only hot air blowing), a warning light (slow down 1-6) buzzer starts going off and the driver side seat belt mechanism broke. What bad luck! Then, when he looks at the engine, he noticed a few oil leaks. I was originally going to sell it for $60K, but when he noticed all these "mishaps", he offered $55K. Are these repairs worth $5K in service fees? Anyone with past experiences, please share. Thanks.
