I had an 88 TR and I loved it but yes there where some things to hate with it too. For one you will have no power steering and it is a heavy car which makes it a job to drive at times. Of course the newer models of Ferraris have power steering but it does not matter to much because after all it is a Ferrari.
Now depending on where you live is another problem because of the heat the car makes, you will have to constantly watch the tempiture in the car. I always stocked up on Redline to add in it and it seemed to drink a lot of it.
Expect electrical problems too because the TR will need its board replaced at some point and it will coast you $1,500 for the board. I however was lucky and did not have to do it but it was going to happen in the cars future for sure.
You will have to to an expense 15,000 mile update to the car and that can cost you unless you know someone. I got luck in this area as I was good friends with the local Ferrari mechanic.
P Zeros are a must fot the car or any other car as it is like night and day compaired to any other tire. This is about $4,000, but I had 512 TR update package and had the bigger wheels so it may not cost you as much.
Borla exhaust for your Ferrari will give you the best Ferrari sound and you will love hearing all the horses.
I love the car but it is old technology, so you will just have add the pros and cons to see if it is for you.
Good luck,
Robert

I had a 1986 TR that I put over 15,000 miles on in 2 years. Othere than a 30k service, the only problem I had was replacing a bad clutch slave cylinder for a few hundred bucks. I loved it !

I have an 86 that I bought with 14K miles with full service records. I have had only minor problems with it requiring both myself and my mechanic to fix. While parts can be expensive, maintainance up-keep will lower those costs. For example the dist caps are $600+ new, but will last practicly forever if you replace the rotors only $60 every year or two of heavy driving. This will prevent the caps from getting scorched when the rotor is worn down. In addition check your wires and plugs also once a year. If a wire is bad, strip the red cover off, and pull a fresh wire through for a very reasonable price. You should also regualarly check your electrical connections and your main fuse box. Ensure all of your connections in the open air ( engine comp ) are clean, dry, and greased. Make sure the fuse box has been checked, and you should check the connections and clean / grease them. You should also not be running 4000watts of stereo equipment through the standard wires. Run all acc from the battary with fuses and relays. Check the Alt every year, as mine went, and most do at least once. This list is not limmited to TR's, and there are many more things that have been mentioned by the knowledgable people on this board that will save you money, and help the car run better. If you buy a fixer-upper, you are always behind the 8 ball. Spend the few $$ more for a verifiable low milage one / two owner car and have it inspected and then keep up with the maint.

Anders- After owning an 89TR (20K miles) for 2.5 years, I have invested $12K into the car. That is without repairing the current problems. Cam seals and gaskets leaking, ecu bad (slow down light buzzing all the time), AC just went out and the seat belts never worked. I'm actually selling it tomorrow for only $50K. My overall opinion of the car is very high maintenance, great build quality, comfortable to drive, but very slow on the low end (0-60mph) but high end is impressive (100-160mph). If you have $50-60K to spend, I recommend the Corvette Z06. Reliable and extremely fast with 405 horse, tons of torque and 0-60mph in sub 4 seconds. Just my 2 cents...

Hi, I am thinking about buying a Testarossa, but I have heard some negative rumours.
What is your experience with the early Testarossa (not 512 TR) ?
-Is it a good and reliable car, or is it causing you a headache due to maintenance / repairs / expensive service and high running costs ?
