I too have heard that they are going to make a lightened hot version of an existing model - 99% likely the 360M - to honour Micheal Shumacher. |

Mark my words. The next 360 version will be a lightened version, probably called Superleggiera. |

Seems silly to make a barchetta when you have a perfectly good functioning spider, with a convertible top that actually allows it to be driven at speed. The 550 Barchetta is limited to 70MPH with the top in place, but there is no 550 spider, so the barchetta is the only option for 550 fans who want open sky. I just can't see driving a 360 barchetta at 70MPH when the spiders will be blowing by me with their tops up. |

If and when it becomes available, the 360 Barchetta will probably be of limited production and will be in the same vein as the 348 Serie Speciale, the 512 TR Speciale, and the 355 Serie Fiorano. I'll bet it will be lighter, possibly slightly more powerful, and provide a more sporting interior that the 360 Spider. You know the game, something to stir up the press and keep Ferrari's name in all the magazines until the 575M replacement shows up. |

Warren: thnx for asking that, I never knew the difference either. Yet, would there actually be a market for a 360 barchetta when there's already a spyder available. Seems to me that the difference between either spyder & barchetta is too small to start a whole new production line over. But I could be totally wrong... and problably am

A Barchetta 360 would signal the end of the current model run. We'll probably see an updated car by 2004. My guess is that it will have a larger displacement with 450HP, 2nd gen. Skyhook suspension, 3rd gen. F1 system, and launch control. |

Ernesto, Not that they are the definitive source of Ferrari knowledge, because they're not, but Motortrend even states that "Ferrari has been testing a Barchetta variant of the 360 Modena" and that the new car "will likely see production for 2003." I guess we'll see. Wayne |

I think I'd still wear a helmet if I were driving that thing. |

Warren, "Barchetta", meaning "little boat" is a throwback to the 166-212 Barchettas of the late 40's and early 50's. Traditionally they differ from "spyders" or "spiders" by having a lower profile windshield and no true functioning top. |

Yes, now I notice the windshield. It is much taller than the original little one that forced a helmet to be worn. I wouldnt doubt this going into production. Ernesto |

Ernesto, This is actually the same car, but if you look closely, it's changed. The windshield is much taller than before and is now functional, hence the speculation that it is serving as a prototype for the production model. |

Dumb question: What's the difference between a Spider and a Barchetta? I thought the Barchetta was just a fancy word reserved for higher end F- like the 550. |

That 360 Barchetta was made for Luca years ago and came out in several magazines. Rumors are that it may go into production. Ernesto |

Not much protection from that low, delicate windshield. If they're going to build it, it'll probably be the last 100 cars. |

Here is a photo lifted from Cavallino. This is actually the car given to Luca Montezemolo as a wedding present but is most likely the first 360 Barchetta to make a public appearance. Take notice of the name plate on the front bumper. |

I don't know of any improvements but it is highly likely the new 360 Barchetta will debut in the 2003 model year. Picture a 360 Spyder with "speed dome" style headrests behind the front seats and a low profile windshield. |
