Can we assume that he is grounded because his timing belt broke?

if we're having a history lesson :-).....

when porsche first came up with that logo design, the town of stuttgart didn't immediately jump on the bandwagon, apparently. the logo grew on them and finally they capitulated to let the good dr. use it as their corporate logo.

smart move in retrospect, though i can imagine the burgermeisters sitting around debating whether this wacko engineer building rear engine cars was ever going to not go bankrupt :-).

"a bad idea brilliantly executed".

doody.

Ah, here we go. Yet another myth surrounding Ferrari. Much has been made of this one in particular. Here is a brief expanation of a couple of the theories behind the famous Cavallino Rampante:
Cavallino Rampante

I was too lazy to copy the text so I just scanned it in. It is from "Great Marques Ferrari" by Godfrey Eaton. An interesting point to add is that according to an article in Ferrari World #11 from 1991, insignia of the Squadriglia 91a was actually a griffin (winged lion) that appeared on the other side of Baracca's Spad VII plane.

To further clarify....Francisco Baracca's mother allowed Enzo the right to use her sons trademark logo. When he died, his momma let Enzo use that logo. Enzo began using the Cavallino in the early 30s on his Alfa Grand Prix cars.

Sorry, Terry. I was typing at the same time as you and hadn't yet seen your response. I think I pretty much repeated what you said.

The prancing horse is actually symbol of a part of the coat of arms of the town of Stuttgart, Germany. The town has used the symbol for centuries. Ferrari's prancing horse logo came from WWI Italian flying ace Francesco Baracca, obviously much later than Stuttgart's prancing horse.

However, the first automobile to use the Porsche name came in 1948, while Enzo Ferrari had been using the symbol for his Scuderia Ferrari racing team since the 30's and on his own race cars since the 125 of 1947.

The horse used by Porsche came first, but Ferrari used their horse first. Make sense?

The Porsche logo is a Family Crest so I think it will probably date further back, but I think Ferrari has been using the prancing horse logo since the mid 30s when he ran the Alfa Romeo race team. Porsche I think they started building cars in 1948, but I am not sure. Ferrari started manufacturing their own cars using the prancing horse as the logo in 1947.

Who was first with the prancing horse logo, Ferrari or Prosche?
