A one owner 246gt, lhd, black, in absolute concours condition sold at the Melbourne grand prix auction for about $184k AUd, I think thats about $90k USD.
Most Dino's here are selling at $120-160K AUD

Your question started me to think about Dino colors. I have an old copy of the Dino Register and I just reviewed the last 127 enteries. Of those 127, 111 had colors listed in the information. I looked at the first color listed and this is what I found:
13 Blue
11 Silver
7 Green
25 Red
16 Black
9 White
15 Yellow
4 Brown
8 Rosso Rubino
1 Gold
1 Purple
1 Gray
Since Black was second behind red I wouldn't consider it a rare original color. However,it has been my experience that many Dinos are no longer in their original color with many being repainted in red. As a result, black may be more rare now than when the cars left the assembly line.

If you have a recent copy of Griot's Garage you can see our silver Dino being judged at Cavallino. Our car is silver (original paint) and it is starting to show it's age but I'm not ready to repaint yet. Hope this info. helps.

IMHO the most spectacular Dinos always have light metallic paint, with silver being the best. The metallics really make all the curves and lines come alive. That's why so many show cars are done in metallic. The least complimentary colors, again IMHO, are the solids, with red and black being the worst. Surface cuvature is lost and the car's paint looks comparatively dead in most light. So why do I own a red 246GTS? Remember I said "comparatively". A barf brown 246 is still one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Also solid colors make it much easier to fix stone chips! :-)

Scott,

I don't have any idea how many 246's were made in each color but I can tell you that a black Dino will sell for more to someone who is looking for a black Dino. The question is, how many people are looking for black Dinos? I would say, from my experience, that "giallo" (bright yellow) is to the Dino 246 GT/GTS what "rosso corsa" is to most other Ferraris. Call it "resale yellow". Just in case you were wondering, here is a list of factory colors available for the 246 GT/GTS. Theoretically though, they could be ordered in any color the new owner wished.

Anyone have any pics or links to pics of black Dino 246s? (I saw the ones over in the showroom section -- looking for more). Seems most of them are red -- do black ones go for more or less? Any ideas what percentage were made black/red/yellow/misc?

Thanks,
Scott
