FYI, no Ferrari is going to be as reliable as your Pantera with its Ford engine/drivetrain. Nor are you going to be able to buy parts at the local NAPA store for a Ferrari like you can your Pantera. But, as Ferraris go I would go with the 512 rather than the 308/328 series.

Thanks Guys. I have always regreted selling off my Muria SV. What a car it was. Having been reading the posts, I have gathered that a lot of the major work that has to be done to the 12 is out of the car such as timing belts and other things. I have also watched the discussion on brake pads, ouch.
Ahhh, boys and our toys.... :-))
Thanks again guys.

Go for a 308 or 328 first. They're the last Ferraris that you can do a significant amount of work on with the engine still in the car. BIG savings.

Coz,

I currently own a P400 Miura and enjoy it greatly. I concur that you should go for the 512TR if you want to put a lot of miles on it. It's probably the most bang for the buck. But if you want a classic that may appreciate try the Daytona. Then again Boxers are really depressed right now....early models accellerate like stink!

Happy Hunting,
Kirk

Thanks guys. I really appreciate te advice. So far I have worked on my Porsches, Muria and the DeTomaso. mNever worked on a Ferrari yet. So there would be a major learning curve I'm sure.
A friend of mind had the older Boxer but I never got a chance to drive it. I have always like the Konig Boxer which I thought was a very beautiful car.
Thanks again all. I am going o drive a few of the different Ferrari's out there and see what feels right.

I agree with wm Hart. Drive a Daytona. You can pick up a "driver" for around 100K. If you care for it properly, which it sounds like you will, you can drive it forever. It's a real beast, kinda' like your SV and GT5. You'll love it!

gee, if you can work on these things yourself, buy the first iteration boxer: gorgeous and truly a beast. (Would love to have an SV Muira). Since things mechanical don't seem to put you off, you may be able to find some bargains; frankly, if you've never experienced a ferrari, you should at least drive a Daytona at speed before you settle on a more "modern" ferrari. The price is of course higher than a TR, probably around the same as a late512 TR, and at least to me, much more "classic." If you really like midengine cars, though, i don't want to persuade you otherwise...

Yes, its my daily driver. I brougt the car over from Switzerland 2 years ago. It's an original GT5. I rebuilt most of it. Suspension, gerabox, motor to 30 over, 308 degree cam. Its pushing 425 HP. Runs in the 13's 1/4 mile. So far I've taken it to 186. I still have to upgrade to 16 or 17 inch wheels. Can't find the rubber for the 15's anymore.
I work on it myself, so keeping it running perfect is as much fun as driving it, well almost anyway. Still want to redo the interior and a few minor upgrades.
I have never been one for buying a car for my garage. I've owned 9 Porsches, 1 Muria SV, 1 other Pantera, a Lotus and they have all been daily my drivers. ) You just gotta have fun.....I'm turning 50 this year, gotta enjoy all I can. But I've never owned a Ferrari. I know I wouldn't be satisfied with anything slower than a 512TR. There lies the delima, do I keep what I have or do I enter a new world, sort of speak. I'm thinking cost vs. use. The bang for the buck.
I am on the road right now.
Thanks for the great welcome and help. I do appreciate it.

Oh, almost forgot. She drives great in the city. Alittle hard to turn until your moving, wanders alittle because of the 10's on the front from the roads, people are a pain in the butt because they surround you while they rubber neck and other than that, I love it. Wouldn't have it any other way.

By older 512, i assume you mean TR, not boxer. I know the market for these is significantly depressed, and you could get a pretty nice, serious car ~60, but you will still have to "fettle" it, perhaps not to the degree you are used to with the Pantera. There are those in the know on this board, including willi h., who have them and can tell you the potential trouble spots. As to being a daily driver, these cars usually run better if they are driven regularly; apart from exterior aesthetics(love or hate with this car), the car is wide, and i find the interior a little cheesy, but they are fast.I wouldrather have a boxer, but that's more about how the car looks than performs, and i would not want to put up with the heat and discomfort of the boxer (let alone worrying about where to park it) if it were my daily driver. My best bet:328, so reliable, cool looking too. (And for the price of a lower price spectrum Tr you could buy a pristine 328 and drive the hell out of it).

I just saw one at Road America last month. The car was original, red with black interior, low miles (in the 20's), but had a small "crunch" in the RR fender. He was asking $13,000 for it. I would have bought it if I didn't already have bought my second Ferrari, just 2 weeks back.

I wish you luck!

I currently own an original 1981 DeTomaso Pantera GT5. Just totally rebuilt it. It is my daily driver.
I am considering selling it and buying a Ferrari.
But I don't want a garage car, I want a driver.
I have been considering an older 512.
Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks.
