Daren i belive the brake system on the 412 is a lot better than our 400s since it has ABS, never driven one so i'm not sure how big of difference. |

IMHO the 400i is a better looking car than the 412 for three reasons: the rear deck lid is higher on the 412, the wheels are kind of dull and flat on the 412, and finally the interior of the 412 is just not as cool looking as the older 400i's wood trim. But, the 412 is supposedly faster at top end by a few mph. Regardless, get the 5-speed no matter what! |

You could have a look at www.400register.com It's a pretty basic website but it does have some info on the 412 and some manuals etc. Also there are some details of my 400 restoration. Slightly different but the same basic car. It may give you some idea of where the problems can be found. And as Mitchel says, watch that self-levelling rear suspension as the parts are no longer available new and an absolute fortune to have rebuilt, around $2,000 per self-levelling strut!! |

Thanx for the quick reply Mitch...There are 2 (an 86 and 87) for sale on ferrariclassified.com both asking 39k. Im gonna so some research over the next few months. Ive always liked the way the 412s looked and If I can find one in the mid 30s I MAY be able to keep my 328. |

T, The 365/400/412s are fantastic cars to drive, and they have a real usable rear seat! The cars have VERY strong drivetrains, the maintenance will not be any worse than another 12 cylinder Ferrari. Stay on top of the servicing, and the car will run forever. Ferrari V12s are VERY robust, and will take a beating. My choice would be a 5spd 412, they are SO beautiful and sound awesome...just as any 12 cylinder sounds. My friend Monty just sold his rossa corsa 400i 5spd, he really liked the car....just beware of the self leveling rear suspension, that is a nightmare if it needs a-fixin'. A 412 will not accelerate as much as a TR, but as far as a usable family car....the 400 series cannot be beat. If you fancy a 4 place convertible, check out a Mondy Cabriolet. |

Does anyone on the list own a 412 now or owned one before?? I want a TR but my other half is pushing for our 2nd Ferrari to have 4 seats. I only have a couple of old articles on these cars. I think I remember reading that the maintenence would be worse than a TR. |
