Pretty sure Callaway only did one Sledgehammer. Although I think the Deutschman-conceived body kit was an option on any later model Callaway TT. I've seen a few so-equipped.

Nice pictures ! thanks for sharing .

is it a Callaway Sledgehammer next to the 288 GTO ( 3rd Pic , where you see the 288 and the Testarossa, ) . There's a red bonnet on the right , it looks like a callaway sledghammer ?

I asked that too. Tonkin is someone who collects cars because he likes them and not for an investment. This is why he didn't sell the GTO and Daytona for $2M. Rich told me that he bought and used the Miata when he was vacationing in Hawaii. He had so many good memories that he had it shipped over here and put into the collection. He also has a '63 Impala 4door that I don't know what the story is but their is nothing about it worth having. The funniest thing though is I remember about 3years ago Tonkin doing a TV commercial. Him or his sons do all their own commercials and on this one he was talking about the Suzuki Sidekick I think. Well one of those import 4x4 things. On the commercial he said that him and his wife have one and they just love it. I thought oh yeah, a guy with $18M in a car collection stuffed with Lamborghinis and Ferraris isn't going to waste his time in a Suzuki. One day I was over at Grand Turismo as I usally am every couple of weeks to see the latest and greatest and Tonkin drove the F50 to work. I was walking around it and admiring it. The next time I was over there there was a Red Suzuki sitting in Tonkins spot with Ferrari sheilds on the fenders, I went in and asked who did that, and sure enough Tonkin drove his Sidekick to work!

@Jim Schad

It is not available in english because it is a german tv station. Click on the link and in the midlle of the page you will find some Ferrari links. Search for "RealVideo: Ferrari 288 GTO im Test". The text in the report is not very important, just enjoy the GTO :-).

Here is a video of the ferrari freak from my village and his 288 GTO. This film was sent in a German tv show named "Abenteuer Auto".

http://www.kabel1.de/tv/auto/archiv/f/#

Search for "RealVideo: Ferrari 288 GTO im Test" in the list.

This is also nice: "# RealVideo: Profitest Ferrari 360 Modena"

I don't know who could NOT love this car (it seems wrong to label it a "car"). 288 is my all time favorite Ferrari.

I know of one in my area, i was lucky enough to be a passenger in it. What an amazing machine. It looks so good standing still, but looks even better in motion, especially when your behind the windshield and in front of the twin turbo V8.

I am in Utah, btw.

I think Norwoods was expecting something like 1200hp out of the one he's now building? That would be like Sophias dress with Pamela Anderson, Britney Spears, and Cameron Diaz in it.

Michael, Norwood will build you a 600 hp twin turbo V8 for it! Maybe that would be like buying Sophia Loren's rosso cocktail dress and having Pamela Anderson in it?

Thanks for the tip, Jim. But that would be like buying Sophia Loren's bright red cocktail dress without Sophia Loren under it. Part of the lure of the 288 is the 400 hp twin turbo V8 with the curb weight of 2555 lbs.

My plan is to sell my movie that I just finished, work overtime and play the lottery :-)

Thanks.

Michael, call Bob Norwood. He'll build you one out of a donor 308 that will save you about $200k. Check the archives for the pictures of the one he's building now. It's amazing. Not the real thing, but still damn nice and with a Ferrari SN!

Oh sweet Jesus! It's really horrible how much I love that damn car! This is my curse in life. I only love the most obscure and expensive things ever made. I would concider myself lucky just to see one of theses cars in a show or museum than my garage.

Thank you for the pictures. I'm going to bang my head against the wall now!

Ferraristi: We do rent the 288GTO, but not often, and only to repeat customers, whose driving habits/skills we've already come to know. For this reason, there is not a published rental rate for this car. If interested, please visit the next time you are in Germany -- would be happy to show the car to any of you, and perhaps down the road, schedule a rental. As I've said, it really is a special car. And as I'm sure you can understand, its just not worth the risk to rent this car to anyone we don't know really well -- the car deserves only the best treatment, and so we are a bit careful with it.

Off topic of the 288 GTO, but I thought I would take a moment to "shed some light" on Mr. Ron Tonkin's personal F50. Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo shared the F50 with my company for a day when we had a "bring your car to work" car show one day. This was sitting about 30 yards from my office window for a whole day. Needless to say, I DIDN'T get much work done. :-p

This next car they said someone offered $2M for it also. It is a real Daytona Spyder with like 600 miles on it, or something close anyway.

This next car only has 960 miles on it and Rich, the guy ahead of the collection, said that Tonkin himself has never driven the car. I really think Tonkin likes the Boxers, he has about 6 of them.

This car is I believe a 1953 Vignale and Tonkin has used it as a hill climb racer before.

Here are some other cars in the collection.

And my personal favorite. If you look closely you can see me drooling.

There are also a couple Lamborghini Miuras and a Vector W8. Since I was there in October Tonkin has added a twin turbo Delorean, a racing Diablo, a 550 Barchetta, a 360 Spyder and he will be taking delivery of the Enzo as soon as they are available. Not at the collection that day was his F40. Tonkin is my hero!

I too was told that there were 273 built but the last one went to a local dealer here in Portland. I have gotten to know all the guys at Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo and last year I toured his private collection. The guy ahead of the collection said that there were supposed to be 272 GTO's built and when Ron Tonkin heard that they were going to be sold he put in his order. Ferrari then told him that I am sorry they are already sold out. Then from what I am told Ron called Enzo himself. Being that Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo is the oldest Ferrari dealer in North America he got his car, number 273, with a plaque stating as such and signed by Enzo himself. I have enclosed some pictures of this GTO and the rest of his collection. Sorry about the quality of the photos but it is really dark in there. The guy ahead of his collection said that Tonkin has been offered $2M for the car but is not interested. Also he said that since the GTO was the first car to use Carbon Fiber some of them are rough, but he said that they took extra care on this one and he said it is the nicest one he has seen.

Crash testing is for cars that are going to be marketed in the U.S. by the manufacturer. That's not to say that there is not still a lot of red tape for those that wish to purchase a non-U.S. spec car outside of the U.S. and import it, as 65 original 288 GTO owners did. According to DOT, 10-15 of these used the "Box 7" race car exemption to get the cars into the States but those cars are not road legal. The others went through whatever processes and upgrades were required so that the cars could be driven on the street.

Ansgar stated that 273 GTO's were built, the last one being for Niki Lauda. I've come across that same story several times but Ferrari historians Gerald Roush and Marcel Massini, both experts on the subject, agree that the numbers work out like this:

1984: 41 produced
1985: 230 produced
1986: 1 produced

For a total of 272. Maybe that last one in '86 was the Lauda car and that has started all the rumors when people assume it is in addition to the total figure often quoted as 272.

Whatever the case, they one of my favoite modern era Ferraris. I would pay to test drive one, but not as much as Mr. Klotz is charging. Actually, Berthold, your site provides rates for all of the cars except the 288 GTO. So how much for a weekend? =P

I've read the the 288 was never officially imported to America and if you wanted one you needed to import it yourself and slap on emissions. Don't know how they got around crash testing.

Berthold, can you upgrade the tires to improve grip?

Thanks

@ Mr. Doody

273 GTO were made, the last one was especially for Nicky Lauda.

i too am a huge fan of the 288.

fyi - according to the ferrari site, 272 were made, primarily for racing. however the series it was destined for (FISA Group B) died shortly thereafter, so most were converted to road car use. they say that absolutely none of these cars were delivered to the NA market. any car in NA was imported.

WWoC in NY has had one listed for nearly a year now (according to FNA) at $325K.

save those pennies!

I have a 288GTO in my collection. This is a very special car -- the first of the limited production "collectible" Ferraris, aka F40, F50, and soon Enzo.

At the time of its release, it was the elite supercar, and even by today's standards is an incredible performer. The only problem is that I don't drive it enough -- it wants to be driven. The only other problem I can mention is traction -- the engine technology actually was ahead of the tire technology. Unlike the F40 or F50, it does not have "exotic" rubber. It takes a careful hand and foot to pilot this car.

One guy in my small village owns one (and a F40, F50, 360 Spider, 360 Modena Challenge, 550 Maranello, 328 GTS and in 2004 the Enzo). You can see this car a little bit small at this post:
