ACW, what do you mean by "Problem is I have no choice since the car is still under waranty."? Did you dealer tell you that you could only have the 360 serviced there or they would void the warranty? You can change the pads yourself or at any mechanic shop and save the money. Ernesto |

Lawrence Coppari (Lawrence): If you could find out the BNW and Audi models and years (part numbers??) that use those pads that fit the 328, I would appreciate it. I do not need pads right now, but I will keep the information for future use. Thanks a lot. |

The local Brake-O can match the pads up for MUCH less. I have had brake jobs done on several of Ferraris in the past at Brake-O for between $100.00 and $200.00 including four new brake pads, having all four rotors turned and the brake fluid flushed out and refilled with SuperBlue. |

Jon K. Yes that was me at the Glen in the silver spider. Can't make Labor Day--big family event. Benchmark. New Spider, 6000 miles in 6 months, three track events (Sebring, Glen, and Lime Rock), only needs new front pads and rear P Zeros. Not bad at all. Car is fantastic and has been trouble free.

For the 328: The front pads are the same as those for a BMW 5 series. It was early 90's when I found this out. The rear pads are the same as an Audi Fox front, also determined in early 90's. I learned this when I was turned off by the prices. I faxed a tracing of the pads to a place that sells brake pads. I could find out the model number of the cars this weekend. Have not had to buy pads in years ever since I quit tracking the car. |

I got the $1000/pad or axle incredible value proposition from the service dept at Ferrari Of Los Gatos. Problem is I have no choice since the car is still under waranty. This was with my previous 360 and end up upgrading both rotors and pads to Brembo Challenge. I did complain a lot about the price, they told me something like "you do what you want, we are not the cheapest Ferrari service shop around". Anyone knows a reliable/honnest Ferrari service shop in the SF bay area? ACW |

All the sensor does is when the pads get worn to the sensors they ground out on the rotor and turn on the brake light. But if you shop around you can get better prices on the pads and simply DIY. Or buy the pads and have a trusted independent tech install them. As Mitchell says $1000.00 per axle that is "Big John" hosin'. |

"Electronic sensors" are a piece of wire that is epoxied and pushed into the pads. When they are worn down, the wire in them becomes an open circuit and it trips the computer into saying "replace your brake pads you idiots." These "electronic" sensors are sold by BMW and Mercedes for their cars for around $10 a piece. $1000 per axle? You are getting seriously hosed. |

Even my '88 328 has the pads with the electronic wear sensors in them. I've since replaced them with Porterfield pads but I believe that Ferrari used the electronic sensors in pads prior to my model year.

Toby, That sounds high even for a F-car dealer. Ferrari Of Washington, who are the most expensive service shop on the East Coast charge only about $380 per axle for a set of Pagid Orange Race pads. I can't imagine that a street 360 pad would be more per axle than a set of Challenge pads. Check around with some independant shops. By the way we met at Watkins Glen I think. Were you in the silver 360 Spider? I was next to you in the garage in the 355 Challenge. Are you going to the Labor Day event at the Glen? Regards, Jon P. Kofod

Some newer Ferraris' front brake pads have ELECTRONIC wear sensors that send info to a dash light. That's what they're talking about. |

"brake wear sensors"? Yah, really. Your dealer is trying to bone you, honestly. Brake wear sensors are little metal tabs that grind against your rotor when ther friction material wears out; makes an ungodly squelling sound. Go elsewhere for a set of replacement pads, you'd be suprised, and change the pads your self, just get a c-clamp to push the piston back in and your good. Explanation from dealer was they also contain the brake wear sensors. Major rip off-right? Who has replaced pads and what did you pay? |
