my research:
I found a couple 95s for $80 to $82 but those were cars that had 30,000 to 40,000 miles on the chassis with replaced motors. Most of the authorized dealers are listing sub 20,000 mile 95 355s for $95 to $105 so I figure they are selling for $85 to $95, which is why I felt I got a decent deal at $91. I know I could have saved some $ by buying from a private party but I feel more comfortable buying from a local authorized dealer, especially with the warranties they offer. The car I bought was traded in 2 months ago and I found out from the owner that the dealer gave him $95 for it on the trade. This particular car is fully documented and immaculate. I appreciate your input.

Guys, one thing to remember: the condition/history/service is more important than the $2,000 - $5,000 one may try to save by buying a car with a low price tag. Being the sceptical Wall Street trader I am, I would be suprised if that $79,000 car isn't a piece of crap. Wholesalers and dealers buy and take in on trade, cars for that price, the public doesn't.
Eli, in 5 years time do you think more will be lost on the '98 or the '95? My opinion: if there is a shirt to be lost, it will be lost on the '98. - This is not directed towards you Martin, Im sure its a beautiful car. Im just talking generic numbers.
NOW ITS TIME TO GET IT ON THE TRACK!!

I would rather pay more and get the 98 from Martin. You will loose your shirt on the 95.

If you can pick up the car for low to max mid 80s you have a decent deal.

Valve service is common on the early 355 and it would worry me more if it was not done!

The authorized dealer part is what would worry me. FoLI and FoNE had both not received highest comsumer ratings in their used car dept. on this forum about a year ago. I remember there were some serious problems of service promissed and not delivered and inadequate fixing of that problem. Too bad that fellow F-Chatter was a lawyer by profession!

I would keep on looking around.

I have a 1998 F355 B with 6,000 Miles for $ 106,000 just to give you an idea.

Also be a little wary of the low mileage on a '95. Has it been sitting in the showroom for awhile? How many owners? There is no better way of finding out about the car than asking the previous owners.

I wouldn't let the valve guide issue scare you. If it needed done, it's now out of the way. As most of us know through previous discussions, this is not an unknown problem for early 355's. I got rid of a '95 for less, but it wasn't in the best condition. It needed a major, and valve guides (so I was told, surprise!). It also needed the front bumper/hood resprayed from all the rocks that accumulate after 22,000 miles.

Knowing what I paid for my '98 6 months ago, I don't think its a bad deal, in all honesty.

Good luck on the test drive, and remember: Show no emotion! :-)

Thats only the asking price. Depending on if you are paying in cash, they will almost definately come down. I've obviously never bought one, but from what i understand the asking price is but a starting point for negotiations.

well, from i gathered here on the board it seemed like consensus agreed that making sure the valve guide service was done is a positive since some of the earlier cars had the problem. Looks like most of the authorized dealers are asking over $100K for 95 berlinettas with this mileage...

Don't think this is a steal. Have seen solid 355's in the past in the mid-80Ks. I agree with George that service on the valve guides at 15,400 is a little disconcerting.

Regards.

authorized dealer in NY. It's red/tan berlinetta/ "Big" service has been done, including belts, tensioner, bearings, etc. The car also had the service done for the valve guide. All work was done at the dealer with docs to prove it. Car looks immaculate. Left a deposit pending a test drive. So, is $91,800 for this car a decent deal?
