Chris: I would agree with you, but, I haven't seen a TR with 30K miles selling for $55k-$58K, in the Chicago market (close to where I live).....$65K- $69K would be more like it. I can also see why a MBZ, or BMW owner would like to steal the car......only because they are FURIOUS to find out what their car has depreciated to!!!!!!!!!!!!! If, for some reason, that you may be correct, then my car is worth $30K-$35K......in which case, it would be worth more parted out.....that makes no sense. Then the choice is obvious......I would keep the car.

Stanley: I agree with you 100%. There is a mental thing about $50K, $100K, etc. I have kept mine under $50K because I don't feel that it would get that. EVERYONE wants to get a GREAT price, even you and me. However, the REAL buyer, who wants the car, will pay more. It seems that INVESTORS are calling, and my answer to them is.......look elsewhere!!!!! They are just feeling me out to see how desperate I am financially. I feel very lucky in that I don't HAVE to sell the car.

Mileage is high...records sound good.

You need to find someone that appreciates what you have to sell. Your advertisements are going to the market of people looking for a steal.

I just sold a 97 NSX. First owner. 10k miles. Flawless. Every caller first said they wanted to buy under 50k. Must be some magic threshold. I did not give up. I waited and marketed to someone who was looking for what I was selling.

I found most people are more interested in getting a great price...rather than focusing on a great car at a fair price.

I think its more a buyer mentallity thing. Think about if you were in the market for your first or second Ferrari (likely TR buyer nowadays) and you drive a MBZ or BMW your mentallity would be as such: If I can buy a Testarossa with half as much use (30k miles) for only 7-10k more why not?

Jim: There is no "loose" feeling in the car. If there was, it would be due to suspension bushings, which can be easily replaced. I have examined mine, and while there are a few signs of cracks in the edges, there are no signs of looseness. In cars where bushings are bad, one can see a light dusting of rust around them. I assume these can go another 40K-50K miles before replacement.

The steering is very tight. Overall the car runs GREAT!

I hope you could find one in your area......DON'T be afraid of high mileage, but ONLY if the history is COMPLETE, and verifiable....you read in other posts how Florida dealers are.

Doug and Bruce: I believe that it would be very hard to sell the car on a national level, due to a lot of suspisions regarding the mileage. The Lotus I sold was still under factory warranty, thus the buyer really wasn't taking that big of a chance. I really can't see how a buyer will cross the country for a car he should be able to find locally.......TR's are not that rare. My thought.

Henry or anyone who knows. I am not trying to buy your TR, but I wondered how tight they are after 63K miles? I am sure the engine is strong, but I wondered if they are like any other car and begin to get rattles and loose feeling?

Doug: I am a subscriber to Autoweek. I once sold a Lotus S4S through it. My plan was to try it next, after the Labor Day Holiday.

I just thought that I would give a "LOCALS" a chance.

You seem to have your car priced well. Try Autoweek with a good price on it that shows well below the dealers that advertise. It is not as cheap as a local paper, but all the readers/distribution are car enthusiasts.

I have listed my car in the Chicago Tribune for the last 3 weeks. Black/Tan, 63,000 miles, excellent condition.

Of the 6-8 calls I received, I would say only 3 where serious. The most common question was "How low will I negotiate down to?". I tell them that I have already given a figure (in the ad), and that now, it is their turn, since, if I give them a lower figure, then they have me negotiating against myself......which I refuse to do. One just hung up, whereas, the other two offered between $42K and $43K. What is interesting is that they refused to negotiate up, yet, they wanted me to negotiate down to their price. I said no to both.

When I told them that the car was a local 2-owner, bought new, and serviced at the SAME Ferrari dealer for all these years, they could care less. This would be rather important to me. Wouldn't you agree? I would rather have a local car with an excellent history, than one with 5-7 owners, and originating in some far away State. Yet, this meant nothing!

The bottom line is that an 88TR, with 63,000 miles is worth $42K-$43K.

I am tempted to keep the car. That way I can put 4,500 miles, of the 5,000 miles a year that I put on a Ferrari, and put the other 500 on my 83 Boxer.

Posts from the previous thread where interested how I would end up. This is an update.

Round 3 will follow!
